I had knee pain for a few years. I sought out physical therapy for 6 weeks and not much improvement. So I visited a few orthopedic surgeons, and Dr. Burrus caught my attention because of his attentiveness and kindness. Ironically, during my consult discussion, he mentioned he wouldn't suggest it for his dad. I should have taken this as my cue. I didn't. The plan was to repair torn meniscus or worst case scenario, clip as little tissue as possible. I went forward with surgery plan. The day of surgery, he was 3 hours late. After surgery I found out 30% of meniscus was cut. Fine. Do what you gotta do. After all, I did decided to go forward. Years later, I've had continued or worse pain since. I've had physical therapy a few times a week or the pain is extreme. It was a hard recovery with no change. read more

Dr. Burrus did a great job with my ACL reconstruction! I had my ACL reconstructed by another surgeon 5 years prior but ended up tearing it while snow skiing. After some PT and trying to live with it for a year, I still felt a lot of instability. Dr. Burrus did my 2nd ACL reconstruction and I was back on the slopes about 1 year after surgery! I have also been able to return to running and other high-impact activities without pain! I am so so happy to be back to doing the things I love! Appreciate the response, but it doesn't explain much. I was never even given an email, let alone told to use it to discuss the MRI. I record my visits so I don't miss things like this and nowhere in the visit was anything like this said. I didn't expect pretty much anyone to have knowledge of the condition I had, which was why I came in with a paper describing it. My family physician had suggested trying an orthopedic surgeon because if one couldn't help me, hopefully they could point me to someone who could. Instead, I was told that my pain was probably just scar tissue from a prior surgery and that I was--and I quote--"just chasing this weird thing". You've got to know as a physician how crushing that can be to someone who is at the end of their rope. I spent the next 30 minutes crying in the parking lot because I had no idea where to go from there. I actually did end up being treated here in Austin, because a uniquely caring rheumatologist took the time to listen and suggested I see a thoracic surgeon. That's all I really needed. read more

After coming to the conclusion her injury wasn't in his specialties he promptly referred her to the amazing Dr Taylor Jobe and even opted not to bill the visit on his part so her insurance would allow her to see Jobe same day! I was devastated when I injured my shoulder last year. As a very active person, I use my shoulders extensively for all of my favorite activities. I tried to PT my injury back to function but wasn't getting anywhere and I started researching my options. I interviewed no less than 5 shoulder orthopedist and decided to go with Dr. M. Tyrell Burrus. He was up to date on the latest technology, surgery technique and stem cell research. He was very thorough in assessing the type of patient I was: extremely active and wanted to get back to shoulder intensive physical activity, diligent about PT, wanted to err on conservative but thorough repair, and most importantly, he listened to what I had to say about my body. I didn't feel dismissed, he addressed my concerns, he respected that I advocated for my well being and I felt we had a team effort in my healing journey. I wanted to find a doctor who I trusted long term for follow up care and new injuries. There were plenty of other doctors with more years under their belt, but it felt to me like some of the surgeons had done so much the same way for a long time and not kept up with new advances. I'm so happy I went with Dr. Burrus; he is brilliant, does clean work, and my extensive repair healed much faster than many of my other friends with similar procedures.
