Best experience we've ever had with a builder! From finishing our basement to completing multiple remodels in our newest home, this team has consistently been professional, communicative, honest, and incredibly hard-working. I did notice a negative review from a former employee, James, who actually worked in our home. While I normally wouldn't address something like this, I feel it's worth noting that our personal experience with him was far from positive, he often seemed unhappy and was quick to complain. It's no surprise to us that he's no longer with the company and is leaving poor reviews years later. CAUTION!! We definitely do not recommend MJ Whelan Construction, Milford Mi. for your next home remodel! Our experience with Whelan was difficult, frustrating and huge waste of our time and money. They lack integrity, transparency, communication and were extremely high priced. Their customer service is very poor, they do not listen to their customer and refused to provide detailed cost for our contract. We tried twice (2021 and 2025) to work with MJ Whelan for our home remodel which consisted of 3 additions: new first floor master suite, entertainment room with bathroom and front porch addition but ran into issues both times. We were unable to get to a signed contract. The first time in 2021, we provided prints but they came in with a price that was crazy high (thought maybe due to Covid) so we shopped around. We had some of the work done by another company then came back to Whelan (2025) to requote. After paying them $8400 for new "sketches" (not even CAD or construction prints) with minor changes to our original drawings, they actually tripled the price!! Unbelievable! We asked them to see what they could do to reduce the cost and all they did was take out content or lower product quality (windows, siding, cabinets, etc.). Ironically, the prices weren't reducing. It's like they played the shell game. They didn't listen or hear us. They did what they wanted. We would tell them what we wanted, then they'd come back with something different. And all this with no detailed costs to work with. We kept getting back total numbers and cost TBDs (cost to be determined)! We were so frustrated. We tried for 7 months only to end up with nothing. We decided to cut our losses $8400 and 7months and walked away. We thought, If it was this difficult to get a contract signed we didn't have any confidence or trust the building experience would be any better! Either MJWhelan got greedy due to covid or grew too fast and can't manage the business. Not sure, but we weren't willing to pay $500k-$1.4m without knowing exactly what we were paying for. read more

We moved into our newly built home in Milford in less than a year! Truly, M J Whalen Construction was a dream come true for us right from the beginning. Tony was the first team member we worked with. His job was to keep us moving forward with decisions re: tile, doors, cabinetry, etc. He has an architectural background and helped us with a number of decisions. Whalen has a great on-line communication system in place for our questions and their answers. Chris and Abbie were our go to people when the building began. Their attention to detail and keeping us updated, since we were in Cheboygan, was priceless. The construction teams came in and out in such a timely manner. The neighbors were even surprised at the speed our house came together! We were always treated with respect and professionalism from beginning to end. We have now been in our house for 5 months. Everything works as it should. Everything looks beautiful inside and out! We are very satisfied and happy customers!! I would always recommend M J Whalen Construction for any project! read more

I was looking to create a home library with custom shelving and ceiling beams. Called this company because they pride themelves on customer service and quality work. They stated they worked on real timelines and were personal and excited by every opportuniity to enrich a home. They came out for the consultation within a few days as advertised and their sales person seemed excited by the project and told me he would have pricing and a sample design sketch within a week. After a week I called and he said he needed more time-- office backed up. After a second week, he sent a note stating that he was still working on pricing and by the way the design department is backed up for more than 4 weeks and he would need $750.00 to even have them work on a preliminary design. Smug company to treat new customers this way-- lets see who they can turn to when they hit a spot when they are not so busy. I m angry that he wasted two weeks of my time before he indicated they are really not interested in my business. read more
