While camping at New Glarus Woods State Park we decided to skip the campfire breakfast and head into a nearby town for breakfast. We found this café online and were very happy we did! It is a quintessential, small town midwestern café. You feel transported back in time to when things were simple, agriculture booming, and rural living was the best livin'. We arrived at about 8 AM on a Sunday and were seated immediately. Seating is severely limited and this is not a great place for large parties. Inside is cramped but clean. There are a few booths and a row of bar stools that get you a front row seat to the cooking action. There is a public restroom inside. The waitress was hustling and very pleasant. The Chef was my favorite - he was busting his chops and had great one-liner quips about how he prepares everything I the order it was received. Got to keep it fair and I respect that! The food was hot and hit the spot. I really want to return one day to grab a slice (or two) of their homemade pie! I also could not stop taking photos of the place - it was the cutest! Pro Tip: If you have to wait to be seated, take a walk around downtown Monticello. You may even spy a horse and buggy!

During a few most relaxing days out of town, in rural Wisconsin, about 45 minutes from Madison, my friend who lives in the region took me to M&M Cafe for brunch. We arrived around 11:30 a.m. and found just a single booth occupied. The older yet quite spry and engaging lady behind the counter quickly welcomed us with a smile and friendly words. Already, we felt we were at home and in a place we already knew and with a business person who already knew us. M&M Cafe is quite small, only about 5 booths long and approximately half as long of a countertop with stools. It's old-fashioned and quaint, with a wide range of Americana on the walls, 50-plus-year-old year old furniture and Floors to match. The cafe is well visited yet in excellent condition and perfectly clean. The American breakfast and lunch fare menu is simple and not too big, just the way I like it. Prices are small-town and could even go up a dollar for each item and still be quite reasonable. Coffee is an endless cup here. I ordered an omelet with vegetables and ham, with perfectly toasted and buttered triangles of wheat toast, and it was excellent. There was just enough grease to know you're at an American style, old-school cafe yet so very little so as to tell you the owners and cook, who may be one of the same, really do care a lot about the food they provide for their guests. Coffee was nothing special but always hot and always fresh, and those two last points count equally as the first. Well my friend and I were enjoying conversation that we could have it a quiet level, the restaurant filled completely and we had no clue what was happening outside of our wooden booth. When we noticed, we also felt the buzz of energy and hubbub of conversation from everyone who came in exactly at lunch hour. M&M was a wonderful lunch spot and a place to definitely return to for more.

Super cute place in a very cute town. We went in on a Sunday morning - around 10am. It is very small as previous reviews have stated but we were able to get a booth. The server was very nice. I ordered Biscuits and Gravy but they were out - I went with corn beef hash with eggs...VERY good. Partner had eggs with hash browns with cheese (must be a Wisconsin thing) and patty sausage - very good. Our service was excellent and I would 1000% recommend this place. The prices were crazy reasonable. Hi

This is like a diner you see in movies or TV, but I'd never actually seen in real life. It was super cute! Seems to be owned by two people, one cooks, and one is the waitress. Both were so genuine and nice, too. They took time to talk to us and made us feel welcome. Couple that with the amazing food, and we have a winner!! I ordered the build your own omelette with cheddar and bacon, plus green peppers for an additional 0.50. It's two eggs, so it's easier to handle, but definitely did not skip on the adds I put in! It was delish. It came with toast, hashbrowns were an additional charge, but I don't normally eat them anyways, so I was fine with skipping it. The price was about $6 too which was downright awesome! My guy got scrambled eggs with toast, bacon and hashbrowns, and proudly declared he was in the "clean plate club" upon finishing. We both couldn't stop eating! Their toast came out pre-buttered, with way more than I would normally add on myself, hence it was super good! But be warned of that! Our meals plus one coffee was about $14.65, which was a pretty big steal compared to Chicagoland. I would definitely recommend this place!

M&M special (with one sausage link already eaten!). Upgraded to "stuffed" French toast!

A "don't miss it" destination for great food (breakfast all day) in a 30's - 50's era small town diner that is a single $.

Seriously - it will be well worth your travel time to check out this gold mine of a local java joint! This cozy little establishment sits in what used to be a gas station that locals say dates back to the 1930s. It's tucked into a quiet rural town, and from the outside you might not immediately guess there's a terrific little coffee stop waiting inside. We stopped specifically to try the coffee shop portion, Willow Bay Coffee. I was just hoping for some decent espresso and maybe a simple munchie to hold me over until an actual meal down the road aways. What I got instead was one of those "You have got to be kidding me" moments. The espresso drinks were excellent. I chose for just a basic Americano, which was definitely HOT and everything I had hoped for in a joe. However, the real surprise was the food. Sounding too good to pass up, I decided to order the Asiago Bagel with Ham & Swiss. It's was a $7 sandwich with a $15 taste. No exaggeration -- the ham was so flavorful I'd honestly compare it to Nueske's. They source locally and let me tell you - this is top tier tasting meat & cheese! This is nothing like what I was expecting from such a humble little shop - and it certainly surpasses anything I have had at even high-end coffee houses and most restraunts I have been to. SCORE!!! My wife decided to follow suit and ordered the sister menu item: their Turkey & Cheddar on gluten-free bread (she has Celiac disease). She reported the same "what the heck?!" taste reaction. DOUBLE-PLAY!!! As an aftermove, I ended up eventually leaving with a couple of muffins from the bakery plate for later: a Banana Walnut and Lemon Poppy Seed. I didn't actually eat any until later that night at home for supper. WA!!! No disapointment here, and they tasted just as good as they smelled earlier. GAME-SET-MATCH!!! While this isn't a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, Raquel ("Ray-Chel") clearly understands the medical issues with Celiac and will take all reasonable precautions she can if you ask. As always: Polite and understanding self-advocacy will always give you the best shots at polite, understanding and effective precautions from your business hosts. And speaking of Raquel -- she's the kind of host every small-town (and heck - ANY) café hopes to have: consumately professional, fabulously welcoming, and genuinely enjoyable to chat with. She is just down to earth Good People! Places like this are why I enjoy looking for local establishments when traveling, and am willing to wander off the main drags once in a while. You never know when you'll stumble onto a hidden gem. In this case, we hit the mine! Seriously - this place will be well worth your drive! If you stop in, tell her that, "show-and-tell husband" in the black cowboy hat sent you!

Make sure to stop in to Just Beyond the Willow for coffees. teas, pastries, soups and…read moresandwiches...everything is great! The best part about this establishment are the owners and their son that run it. They are friendly, and their desire is to please the customer. They have taken an old service station and transformed it into a clean, cute, & cozy place whether in the winter, or enjoy their deck in the spring, summer, or fall!
