We stopped in for breakfast on our way back from Galena. The cafe immediately reminded me of a small hometown diner where my parents used to live. Friendly faces and people which have seem to be lost now a days.... Greeted and seated immediately even though they were busy. Breakfast comfort food at its best. They even left a pot of coffee on the table for us! Corner Cafe is simply a place where all the words and pictures wont give the whole picture. This was a new breakfast spot to try while in the area and the the wait line to get in was a good sign and the place was packed on a Sunday morning. Parking is plentiful with street and a public parking lot right across from it. A table for 5 was a little tight in the small booth but we made it work. The place is old looking with a lunch counter and the low round stools. The menu has the regulars with some house creations and everyone got something different. The food took a bit because they were slammed but the coffee was no problem because the table got a pot. I ordered the corner scrambler with with sunny side up eggs because I wanted real eggs because scrambled eggs could be the food service kind. My plate was hash browns covered with diced ham with two eggs on top covered with sausage gravy with sourdough toast. This unusual combination was very good I thought. The hash browns were perfect golden brown crispy on the outside with a soft center. The sourdough toast was above average but not the really good kind. The eggs were cooked perfect sunny side up. The diced ham was moist and not over cooked. The sausage gravy was delicious with just the right amount of crumbled sausage and that home made flavor you can't get from a can. This is probably one of the best breakfast places around judging by the food and being packed with every seat full. I would definitely stop back for breakfast when in the area. read more

I got three eggs and toast for $9.50. I could've bought two cartons of eggs and a loaf of bread for that price according to the menu it should've been half of that. I will never eat at this place again. I would've got better food at Quiktrip for $3.50 for a breakfast sandwich since they so much for three eggs and two of I did not leave a tip!!!for a dollar more they had a complete dinner. This little dinner is on the end of a square in Monroe,Minnesota I worked the Cheese days over the weekend and it was an experience. I had to start work at 9:30am that weekend so finding this place for a quick breakfast bite of 1 yummy pancake eggs and sauce I was great and my server went above and beyond to get my food out quick. Stopped in for breakfast this morning. Be prepared that this place is cash only. We ordered the biscuits and gravy & the meat lovers skillet. We ate at the counter, as it was the only open seats in the place (right in by where the food is prepared. The second thing you need to be ready for is the size of the meals. You'll need to have stretchy pants, unbuttoned them or ask for a box for the leftovers ( as we did). The food is so good and perfectly prepared, even the poached eggs ( seems to stump a lot of cooks...) the two guys doing all the cooking kept the cooktop humming with all they prepared and it all looked good from omelettes to pancakes ( going to try them next time). The service was fast and friendly, even with the place packed, they did not make you feel rushed. What a gem of a place to go to. Will be back for more and would highly recommend this place. This place was a mainstay for me during my brief homeless period near Monroe. It was recommended by a bartender at another mainstay, Baumgartner's Tavern. Amy's Corner Cafe, as it is known now, has been in the same location since 1906. They have a plaque behind the counter listing all the previous owners. Breakfast and lunch is served in a classic old worn diner room where you can sit at the counter, or at a booth or table. Amy's is popular, and is always crowded. I took advantage of their generous and filling breakfasts which includes many skillets, as well as your standard breakfast fare such as omelets, pancakes and breakfast sandwiches. The American Fries are great as are the huge cinnamon buns. Prices are moderate, too. Do not choose the corner cafe, however, if you are in a hurry. Service, if viewed by most restaurant standards, is very slow. Also, in the 4-5 times I was there, there quite a few mistakes in orders and waiting longer for the corrections. It appears that the low key clientele does not seem to mind, though. And overall, I would highly recommend it as a good value and a great classic breakfast destination. read more

I cannot understand the negative reviews on service. I have always found the service to be outstanding. Normally eat here on Saturday mornings with my wife and granddaughter. Yes, this place is extremely busy because the food is so doggone good and inexpensive. So, sure. On a Saturday or Sunday morning, you can expect to take 45 minutes to get in and out of there - most of the wait is waiting to get a table. As far as the waitresses and cooks, they are humping. Waitresses are always polite in my experience, and take care of you. As far as breakfast is concerned.. wow! It hardly gets better. Food is plentiful, fresh, and my granddaughter loves it for the Mickey Mouse pancakes. I normally get a couple of eggs over medium with hash browns and either a sausage patty or beef patty - with raisin toast. Their hash browns are to die for. My eggs are always cooked exactly as I like them. My wife likes here over easy, and hers are always cooked to perfection. There's no other place in Monroe where I would sooner get breakfast - and I've eaten at them all. As far as a diner goes, George Webbs is a close second. But we don't have GW's here in Monroe. Anyway, if you are in town and want a fabulous, low price breakfast - stop in at Amy's Corner Cafe. Get there early or late if you want quick seating. read more

The staff seems to cater to regulars and forgets about everyone else. I saw customers come in AFTER us and be served BEFORE us. The food is decent but not consistent. This is a lovely original 50's style diner. Lots of counter seating and super tall ceilings. It's not fancy which is what I found endearing. The breakfast we had was great. I had a sausage, egg and cheddar sandwich with crispy hash browns. Very yummy; the sausage tasted homemade and was especially good and the hash browns were great. My wife had pancakes, eggs and sausage patties. With the pancakes they bring homemade apple butter and homemade strawberry rhubarb spread along with pancake syrup. Food is a 4 service a zero. With a staff of 6 or 7 you wouldn't expect for breakfast to take 45 minutes. You would not expect to wait, at the counter, for menus for as long as we did or expect to see people come in after you, be served before you and get their food, bill and out before your food came. But all that is true at this Corner Cafe. The food while decent is typical diner food at typical prices. I can't see coming back here. read more

Delightful. Exactly what the pictures show. If you are uptight or in a Big hurry don't go. It's been here since 1906. Honest food cooked right in front of everyone. $6.25 for what must have been 3 eggs with ham toast and hash browns was great. This place has the old diner look. The kitchen is over to the side where you can see them cook. You can sit at the counter or at a table or booth. We had breakfast and it was very good I had the Biscuit and gravy scramble and my husband had Corner scramble. You get a lot of food. Waitress was very friendly as well as the other workers. This is one of four local breakfast restaurants I've frequented over the years (the others being Swiss Alps, The Blue Ox and Red Apple Inn), and I will be comparing The Corner Cafe to these three. First, the food quality. Of the four, the quality is definitely the highest here. They seem to be best known for their omelets, which are very filling and reasonably priced. They also have skillets, and an excellent option called the corner scrambler. Overall if you're looking for the best quality, you can't go wrong with The Corner Cafe. The building itself is a bit cramped, especially considering how consistently busy they are (this is a testament to the food quality). It's not uncommon to have every booth full, and need to sit shoulder to shoulder at the counter. I often feel bad for the staff, who need to squeeze behind the counter and around each other to get condiments. With this small space, plus the kitchen being in direct sight, there is definitely a greasy smell, and people will know you've been here afterward. Getting in is the biggest chore here, something to be prepared for. The wait time is consistent, but on average the slowest of the four (except for The Blue Ox occasionally). Whether they are packed or in a rare period of slowdown, the food comes out usually around 20 minutes or so. If you are in a hurry this would probably be the worst of the four restaurants, but the quality is worth it if you're patient. Finally, the wait staff. Overall I found them to be very friendly and fairly quick to take our order. Getting the check is occasionally slow, but for the most part I can't complain. Overall The Corner Cafe has great food quality, a bit of a wait time and is often busy, but at an affordable price this definitely ranks as one of the best local restaurants to get breakfast. Food is okay, huge portions. Get less than you think you want. Very slow service and packed regardless of what time you go (we shared a table with two other couples) so if you're in a hurry or aren't wanting to eat with strangers, look someplace else. My chair faced the kitchen area so I watched food be microwaved, raw bacon and sausage sit on a wooden counter before being put on the griddle, and none of the cooks I saw were wearing gloves of any kind. Outstanding: breakfast food, service, friendly attentive staff, portions and price! This is the eatery in a small, well kept Town where the locals go to eat (when you ask anyone in town "hey, where is the great food that YOU want to eat?") ... the store owners around the Town Square didn't steer me wrong. Fairly small and nothing fancy...but amazing omelettes, hash browns completely from scratch (as we're the sausage patties, biscuits & gravy, strawberry/rhubarb jelly, apple butter...oh and $1 cinnamon rolls as addictive as crack cocaine!). They are the center of their local universe for fresh home-made pies as well (I was already in a completely satiated "food coma" and couldn't even look at a pie to take home). When I was deployed to Afghanistan, I dreamed of breakfast food like this! I'm new to WI ... drove an hour to try this place...well worth the drive and I'll definitely be back and often. (Funny--I told the staff that they have really good reviews on Yelp and they had no clue of the website!).
