I could have sworn someone had tampered with it; it felt like the whole thing was about to give out. Confused and a bit panicked, I turned to my brother for advice. Without hesitation, he recommended Jose, proclaiming, "Jose is an honest man; he'll do right by you." Given my brother's track record for quality recommendations, I decided to take his word for it and got my truck towed from Hollister to Castroville. When I arrived, I was immediately struck by how busy he was. There were three cars already on lifts, a customer at his desk, and another on the phone. Despite the chaos, Jose was on top of everything; he walked out to greet us while still talking on the phone, listening closely to my account of the issues I had encountered. As I recounted the sequence of events--from the pre-fuse change symptoms to the post-fuse change rollercoaster ride that felt like my transmission was in freefall--Jose's attention never wavered. He took note of every detail. After a thorough diagnostic, Jose identified one additional faulty fuse that had escaped my notice. It honestly could've ended so much worse. Thankfully, they were available right away and able to tow us all the way to San Jose, which is where we were originally headed. Lorenzo helped us, and he was amazing--super friendly, communicative, and reassuring during a stressful time. On top of that, they gave us a really fair price. The only thing that dampened the experience a bit was the receptionist who answered the phone. She sounded like an older woman and came across as pretty rude. When I called back a second time because we had lost track of Lorenzo while following him, I asked where he was, and she responded with an attitude along the lines of, "What do you mean he's with you? He's supposed to be towing you guys," instead of trying to help calmly. I ended up just asking for his number. Aside from that interaction, everything else--especially Lorenzo's service--was excellent. He really turned a stressful situation into a smooth experience.

To this end, I finally turned to Yelp and found Jesus and his crew at Gonzalez Auto Repair. Some weeks ago, my 04 Honda Ridgeline (149,000 miles) developed a shudder when the brakes were applied. This indicated to me the need for a brake job. I procrastinated. Then, a couple of days ago, symptoms escalated to a metal-on-metal sound from the right rear . . . Not good . . . Dropped in to check this place out, Jesus said, "Bring it in." I returned with the truck around 1:30 pm. and went to lunch while he inspected the truck. Upon my return, Jesus suggested a two-srep plan. Do the rear breaks, and test drive to see if the shudder was corrected. I felt Jesus was looking after my interests by keeping the cost of the job down. Around 10:00 the next morning, Jesus called to inform me that the shudder was still present following a test drive. Numbers were quoted, the go-ahead was given to do the front breaks, and the truck was ready for pickup by 3:00 pm. This kind of efficient service and stellar communication earns Jesus and Gonzalez Auto Repair my 5-star rating. We pulled into Castroville and stopped at NAPA Auto Parts (11501 Merritt St, Castroville, CA) to ask about finding someone to look at the van. We were directed to Uribe's. Miguel, the owner happened to be there working on his son's vehicle. He put the van up on the rack, inspected the brakes and found both front calipers were corroded. This was due to many visits to the Black Rock Desert and exposure to it's alkaline soil. The passenger side had frozen completely by the time we arrived and the driver side was close to failing as well. Miguel called several places and found the needed parts (in spite of being late on a Saturday afternoon of the Holiday weekend). He removed the old calipers, turned the rotors, replaced the pads, bled the brake system, test drove the vehicle and had us back on the road; all within about 3 hours. His rate was reasonable and work top notch. He could have easily overcharged us but chose not to. I am grateful to Miguel and highly recommend this shop.
