I can't help but look up places before I venture into a suburb. The idea of eating at a random cafe vs an amazing one is too expensive in both wallet and morale. I picked out Either Or via Yelp Sydney and their other competing review sites. I strolled in the little cafe around 9:30 and was seated at a corner table in the back. The best thing about Sydney cafes is there aren't usually doors so there's natural lighting and breeze from the street no matter where you sit. I had seen some of the menu prior to coming in, but I decided on an interestingly sounding Black Sesame Latte with almond milk and "The Naturalist" bowl. The latte was lightly sweet with toasted coconut on top. Holy it was good. I'm a kombucha or bust kind of person, but had to try a latte for the 'gram. 'Twas worth it. Okay, let's talk about this bowl of heaven, maybe from heaven, placed down upon me as if they knew exactly what I needed. The bowl contained smoked turmeric cauliflower, rice, coconut, salsa, cilantro, etc etc etc and my FAVE - roasted sweet potato cooked down so well and so flavorful. I am soooo about this bowl. Someone ship it out to me, please. I love how simple but extravagant the food preparation is at Either Or. The menu ingredients weren't some kind of vegan-friendly craze where you wonder how one could afford to even try to replicate a meal at home. No, this was very different, and in the best way! The customer service was lovely and one of the staff members turned out to be a fellow American-turned-Aussie. We had the loveliest chat & I had to let the staff know just how great this California girl thought their food was. Don't be fooled by lack of Yelp reviews, American tourists, it's still expanding here and I can be the first to say how amazing it is. *Recommendations include one of the four lattes they offer, any of the bowls, benny brekkie (an australia fave), and an espresso martini if you're feeling up to it. I asked a staff member and was told the drink was equivalent to two shots of espresso, so you coffee drinkers will not be shorted of your caffeine. This cafe is a MUST. Okay, that's all.

The in-house roastery provides great coffee (plenty of options for coffee snobs from Melbourne) and you can buy beans and other coffee paraphenalia to take home. The guy who runs this place is Peruvian and you can see the influence in some of the dishes here, especially the Peruvian Roll (duh.) If you've never had Peruvian chincarron before, you really need to get this roll. Seriously. It's one of the best rolls I've had in Sydney. The kumera (sweet potato) isn't overcooked, the pork is tender and delicious, the fried egg is a perfect runniness, and the salsa criolla with lemon mayo is a great complement. Friends got a few of the other stuff on the menu like the Puffed Galette, Beef Hash, and Mushroom Medley and really enjoyed those, in particular the Puffed Galette. They use coffee beans from The Golden Cobra and the coffee is pretty spot on. If you want to taste all the notes in the coffee with a cold brew, they do that too. Additional plus is the take-away paper packet is foil coated to prevent any sauce or oilyness to make a mess on your hand or clothes. I also highly recommend the baguettes - the lemongrass chicken is messy, but crusty and delicious. Anyway, this place has been doing its thing in Surry Hills for a while now and we were surprised we've never heard of it, nor crossed its path until now. It is know for Bangladeshi street food. Strolling the streets of Surry Hills the restaurant is kinda unassuming, for a name like Bang, they could do with some signage that has some Bang, and some Neon could work. Once inside, you'd be hard pressed guessing this is a Bangladeshi street food restaurant, the place looks more like a fine dining restaurant, it was quite refined, with a suave modern feel. Much like their take on Bangladeshi street food, the menu items, although street food inspired, were refined. With technique and quality presentation. This place also had an exciting wine list that, with some excellent wine from Portugal that paired nicely with the food on offer. Can't say we have visited many restaurants serving Portugese wine. The food at Bang was extremely tasty, not too heavy and not too much spice, just enough to hit your taste buds with a flavoursome spice kick. Upon viewing the menu it was noticed that there was a starter of peanuts for $2 and that all proceeds donated to the Fred Hollow's Foundation. Great to see a restaurant giving back and we happily obliged. Upon further viewing of the menu, the honey roasted paneer instantly stood out as a dish to order and that instinct proving correct, as it was an excellent option. The soft shell crab was another top option with the spicy chilli achar providing that flavoursome bang along with some welcomed sweetness. There were many hits amongst the starters, the briyani arancini another quality option. The Tandoori Lamb cutlets are a must, they were perfectly cooked, the spice and herbs combining for some more bang and amazing flavour. We love a good Korma and the oven roasted, spiced duck was the pick of the mains. The meat perfectly prepared very enjoyable dipped in that rich sweetness of the korma. This was excellent dining experience with tasty food and equally tasty wine and good service. It was enjoyed in a nice setting with great company where_do_i_eat_pete and eatwithmyfoodsafari. This used to be a rough and tumble, don't bring your real teeth with you, argy bargy worker pub back in the day --- and quite frankly nothing's changed. Well the decor has. Sure it looks nicer inside, but really they haven't attempted to shift the clientelle to their new look (I was in there after all ha!) The Orchard has large pointless areas, like their pool room which is about as sterile as Royal North Shore, Ward 3. They also have a large bank of TAB monitors which dominate the presence of the place. Hence they attract that unsavoury element by having them *in* rather than *adjacent to* the public bar. They do offer food, and it is generally quite good, but after half a dozen bowls of loudmouth soup, everything tastes good (even 3 month old Mrs Macs pies from 7-eleven or those nukeable cheeseburgers) so it's a little more difficult to gauge the restaurant. I'll let someone else give that a stab. In terms of the atmoshpere unless you are there to drink yourself stupid whilst punting on the tab; or getting a few cheapies in before heading somewhere else; I wouldn't bother going. If you are looking for a fun time, you'll probably find it elsewhere methinks. There's better places to chill in Chatswood, so why was I at the Orchard? Convenience, and post German beer hall, friendlier to the wallet and the liver, but ultimately I ended up somewhere else.
