I still think they are an excellent bakery, but I have to deduct a star for their abysmal delivery/catering service. Had to cancel a delivery because the driver could not figure out how to get the order in the building. Really, people? This gets done several times a day by hundreds of delivery folks, it really isn't that hard. And to top it off, they changed their story to "can't deliver to Boston" when I told them about the loading dock. Just tell me up front that you don't deliver and we'll be good, guys. It was a real pleasure working with Lyndell's for our wedding cake. Karen was professional, cheerful, and helpful from the very beginning. The tasting she prepared was very generous and there were many options to choose from. The website is a good jumping off point to pick the decorations you would like and the cake we cut looked just as I had hoped it would. Our cakes were delivered on time and in perfect form. All I can say is... YUM! I have been going to Lyndell's for years and am never disappointed with my pastries or the service. The half-moon cookies are seriously the most delicious thing you could ask for if you are in the mood for a sugary delight. It really is dangerous living this close to a bakery. I love old school bakeries, especially ones that have cupcakes and danish! So of course I had to try Lyndell's the same day I looked at my new apartment when I heard about it. My roommate said they have the best Boston Cream donuts and they have vanilla cupcakes with chocolate icing, my fave! Every time I go I get one of their cupcakes. I've also tried the danish and Boston cream donut, both really sweet breakfast options! I brought my parents a box filled with some of their faves (mini eclairs, jelly donut, cream puff, danish, blue berry muffin) to take on their road trip and they loved everything. Lucky for me, I have no car. Otherwise I'd drive up to Lyndell's Bakery and buy up the half moons every time I crave a sweet treat, which is EVERYDAY! I thought I would like the golden traditional the best, but the chocolate half moons are just as good, and might be my favorite! Whether you like the golden or chocolate, and white or black or both, you can't escape the fact that the cakes are good, fluffy, and satisfying. So, why are they so good compared to everywhere else? Well, they're basically flat cupcake tops with a delicious coat of icing! That's why! And who doesn't like just the top of a cupcake! I especially like that you have the option to choose your favorite combination. I read an article about Boston's best donuts and saw Lyndell's HONEY-DIPPED-DONUTS get high remarks. They run out of their popular donuts early on weekends so instead, I tried: Cinnamon Donuts -- Good choice for cinnamon lovers but I wish there was more sugar. Sugar Donuts -- Soft and fluffy with plenty of sugar. Cannoli -- BETTER THAN MIKE'S! The cream inside had a wonderful hint of citrus. The mini sizes were a perfect bite size. 2 donuts + apple turnover + mini cannoli = only $4.45! Tips: Like a typical bakery, there is no seating here so you will have to get your treats "to-go." If you're planning on grabbing brunch in the nearby restaurants where most of them do not take reservations, stop by Lyndell's to pick up a donut to munch on while waiting in line. I've been wanting to go to Lyndell's for a while now, and I was finally pushed over the edge when my friend was coming to visit for his 30th birthday and I hadn't baked anything. I made sure to go for a loooong run, and then ended my workout at Lyndell's. Such a cute bakery! I have a little place in my heart for bakeries, and Lyndell's fits right in. I picked out an assortment of things to put in a box for my friend's 30th- half moon cookies, a gingerbread man, a chocolate tart with fruit, and a white chocolate cake with berries on top. Everything was awesome! My favorite was the half moon cookies. If I wasn't on a perpetual diet, I'd eat one every day. I cannot speak more highly of Lyndell's Bakery. The only reason I had to give them four stars is because of the huge amounts of icing they put on everything. I'm not too into icing but if you like it then I'm sure you'd give them five stars. They have reasonably priced, very basic cupcakes (unlike nearby Kick*ss) and EXCELLENT cookies. The rainbow M&M cookie (you'll find them in a basket near the door) are soooooo good. They also have extremely cheap cakes ($9) that are excellent if you need a last minute birthday or celebration cake. They have always been extremely accommodating and even donated a bunch of cookies to a friend of mine raising money for a charity. read more

So this place got pretty good reviews, and I came in with an open mind, but it was still disappointing. I grabbed an eclair and a half-moon cake after reading reviews that mentioned how great they were and my girlfriend got an old-fashioned chocolate donut. The eclair was average, no better or worse than anything else I've had. The half-moon cake was new for me. It was a cookie-sized cake with some homemade vanilla icing on one side and some chocolate icing on the other side. The vanilla side reminded me of those frosted animal crackers that I'd eat in elementary school, while the chocolate side, which I preferred, tasted like a regular cake. My girlfriend's chocolate glazed donut was dry and not anything better than you'd find at a Dunkin' Donuts, although to be fair (and because she forced me to write it) she quite enjoyed it so YMMV. We also came in around 5PM, so it's likely that everything tastes better when you come earlier in the day The staff was super nice though and got us water. Lyndell's is one of those magical places that has stood the test of time. This location has been operating since 1887 and it's a classic bakery in every sense. The only thing that I've had from Lyndell's that I didn't love was the almond macaroon, which is a bit on the chewy side. Fortunately, they have something called an almond disk which more than makes up for this one shortcoming. The almond disk is a soft almond cookie, topped with a good sized portion of butter cream and covered in chocolate. The butter cream here is the best I've had and I find myself craving it from time to time. The location is a double edged sword as it isn't the most convenient place to get to, but it does a good job at keeping the tourists away, so I'll consider it a win. If you haven't been here, go. Love Lyndell's. I do like the cupcakes and the sweet treats, but what I buy here regularly is bread. They have INCREDIBLE bread. I've had several different kinds at this point; my favorites are the Honeycomb Graham (or Andama) and the Italian. The Honeycomb Graham is a sweet, dark bread, a variation on your average toast, while the Italian is a rounded white loaf, either with sesame seeds or without. Both of them are great just as toast with butter; I like the unique flavor of the Honeycomb Graham, and there is SOMETHING about the Italian bread that is just AMAZING. I don't know what it is, but I love that bread. Other than that, I'd recommend basically anything. Great cupcakes (though sometimes their non-standard flavors are so-so), great doughnuts, great pastry. I particularly like the lobster tail, which is a croissant-ish pastry stuffed with sweet ricotta cheese. They have packaged cookies as well, and I haven't tried all of them, but their pizelles are wonderful. Downside: NO croissants! I know, I know, it's an Italian bakery. Also in my experience the women behind the counter are either nice and incompetent or curt and extremely efficient. So sometimes it takes two minutes to buy bread, and sometimes it inexplicably takes ten. Long line on Saturday mornings, too. read more

In the last 10 or 12 years, I have ordered a wedding cake and two birthday cakes from Lyndell's, oh, and a retirement party sheet cake for work. (The most recent was about year ago.) Their cakes are my favorite in the Boston area. They are not as fancy (nor as expensive!!) as Party Favors in Brookline, and their designs are not as fun or as modern. BUT, I learned a special secret! If you give them special instructions or photos, they will make you a cake that is gorgeous, delicious and affordable. My fave is white or yellow cake with chocolate frosting, but their wedding cake (traditional white/white) was outstanding. The cupcakes are good if you want to get an idea how the cake will taste, but the cupcakes generally are not as moist and perfect. They also several locations so you can pick up at one that is convenient for you. read more

A Friday during Lent. No meat, but a good excuse to get some Easter pastry from a good local bakery. For us that meant Hot Cross Buns (and a half moon pie for me). A hot cross bun is a roll studded with raisins or currants topped with a cross of frosting, and tend to be around only during Lent and Easter. Lyndells does these pretty well, except they aren't "one a penny, two a penny" (as the song goes), they're $1.25 each, which is a but pricey. They are highly enjoyable nonetheless, and it's worth the little extra for a seasonal treat. The half moon pie is the star of the bakery for me though, a sponge cookie topped with gobs of chocolate and vanilla frosting. A sugar rush definitely, but mighty tasty regardless (and woke me up at 9am). A bit pricey for a neighborhood bakery, but it's worth it for the homemade pastries and rolls. read more

I was planning an event for my Institute and I saw that Lyndell's was having a fundraiser for one of our members who passed away. I called Karen to see if I could participate by purchasing some of their baked goods. Karen offered to not only give us their items but have them delivered to us. Two birthday cakes have received very rave reviews; an understated hazelnut cream cake was well liked by the older crowd for which it was intended, and the younger set loved a small whipped cream and strawberry cake that Lyndell's made to order. I can't go in and avoid their raspberry crumbles, which are exceptionally sweet, crunchy and melt-in-your-mouth buttery. The place itself gets a huge thumbs-up as it is a lives-up-to-its-billing classic, hometown bakery. However, I should note that their lemon bars are frighteningly bad; the lemon filling is neither sweet nor tart, and the pastry crust tastes like limp bread. But everything else I've ever had has been delightful, so simply avoid the bastard treats and enjoy the rest. read more

It was Friday at 6:30 and their sign and website both listed the closing time as 7 PM so they probably shouldn't have rushed me. That being said, I bought 6 moons to bring to a dinner party as dessert. They were huge! These were fantastic. More like cakes than cookies but what a hit! I plan to keep this place in mind! Uh - may - zing!!!!! We had a half moon cookie, mini Boston Cream Pies, mini canolli with almonds on the ends and a cream puff. They were all out of this world good. The half moon cookies are like a heavenly version those sugar cookies with frosting that you can get at your grocery store (the ones that are usually decorated in gaudy colors for whatever holiday is nearest). I admit, I love those grocery store cookies! But, Lyndell's blows them out of the water. I can't believe I live two hours away. What am I going to do??? This place has the best frosting of any bakeries in the Boston area. It's homemade and they aren't afraid to really load it on cupcakes and half moon cookies. I'm also a big fan of their bread, particularly, the raisin bread. It's very fluffy and light, great for french toast. The line can get pretty long if you're not in very early. read more
