When we toured Kennolyn back in 2023, we met Elyse for the first time. She was incredibly helpful and friendly from the start. We immediately felt great about the venue and decided to book it for our wedding. Between booking and the wedding, we enjoyed several fun events like the wedding overview day and the details meeting. The overview day was a blast--meeting vendors, sampling the food we'd enjoy on our wedding day, and exploring all the beautiful spaces Kennolyn has to offer. The bridal area was lovely for getting ready, the groomsmen had a fantastic time in the groom's suite, and the ceremony and reception spaces were perfect. There was even a grassy lawn for the kids to run around on. From our first meeting, Elyse was incredibly responsive and helpful with my countless questions. She ensured everything was perfect for our big day. We got married at Hilltop Hacienda, and the day went off without a hitch. My husband and I didn't have to worry about any details because the staff had everything under control. They were friendly and helpful to all our guests, who couldn't stop raving about the perfect day. The views were gorgeous, and the ceremony and reception spaces were stunning. The bartending staff were so kind and made everyone feel like old friends. The food was phenomenal, with many delicious options for our guests. The entire staff made sure everything flowed smoothly from one moment to the next. We genuinely had the BEST DAY EVER, thanks to the Kennolyn team. Elyse and Deirdre ensured everything went well and helped calm any nerves I had. It's been a month since our wedding, and my husband and I keep saying we wish we could do it again every weekend because it was so much fun. I cannot recommend Kennolyn enough to anyone looking for a wedding venue.

I wholeheartedly recommend Kennolyn Hilltop Hacienda! I was married on 5/20/23 with the Spring…read morePromo package, and I was so happy with the experience. The venue is gorgeous, and it was the perfect place for my outdoor wedding. There is a redwood grove or great lawn facing distant views of the Pacific Ocean that are both beautiful options for a ceremony. The patio facing the lawn is perfect for dinner, and the indoor courtyard is stunning and great for cocktails and dancing. We didn't use the Hacienda itself much except for guests who wanted to sit by the fire (it's a good backup plan for inclement weather). The bridal house is amazing and accommodates many people for getting ready (multiple rooms and bathrooms, living/dining areas, with a gorgeous patio with the same amazing views out to the ocean). There is also a separate Casita with a bathroom for the groom's party to get ready. There are so many beautiful natural and architectural places for photographs as well. The landscaping is beautiful, so you don't need to spend money on many extra florals. Weddings have exclusive use of the venue, which makes it really private and intimate. The Spring Promo deal was a great value and included buffet catering/cake/dessert, alcohol package, DJ/MC, tables/chairs/etc, ceremony arbor, some florals (it was enough given the landscaping), taxes/tips. The deal is for 100 guests, and when my group ended up being half of that, Andrea (Events Manager) was so kind and tried to give us more value for the money: double the variety of passed appetizers than was initially included in the package and adding orchids (my favorite flower) to the florals. The all-inclusive nature of the package was so amazing for not having to worry about each of these things individually. Since the catering was included and food was very important to us, I was initially nervous to sign the contract before tasting the food. My family and I were so happy on our Tasting Day when the food was excellent, and everything we tried was delicious (and I think we have pretty high standards for food)! They were also so accommodating of dietary restrictions and preferences. Since our package was a served buffet, the vegetarian/vegans were given their own plates separately. The cake and assorted dessert were also delicious (and they were willing to make a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting as we requested). The DJ/MC (Courtney Helms) was assigned from Sound in Motion, and we got along great. He did a wonderful job too - I danced the whole night! He was also very accommodating with including French music that we compiled (my husband is French). Finally, I cannot say enough wonderful things about Andrea (Event Manager), Elyse (Wedding Coordinator), and the entire staff! I did not have a wedding planner, and they filled the job beautifully. I was so impressed with their communication. They responded promptly and warmly to every email, line-by-line, answering all my questions for months! They were so supportive and patient, and they seemed as invested as I was in having a wonderful wedding day and making everyone happy and comfortable. I am forever grateful to them and to Kennolyn for such a magical day! (Beautiful photos by @EmilyMerrillWeddings)

It somehow manages to feel quaint, elegant, and homey all at the same time. The service is consistently excellent, and we honestly haven't ordered anything here that we didn't like. Even the calamari deserves a special mention. Calamari feels like such a staple appetizer at so many restaurants that it's hard for one to really stand out, but somehow Shadowbrook does it. Their calamari is absolutely amazing. The beef Wellington, lobster tail with filet medallions, New York steak, and lamb have all been fantastic as well. One thing we especially appreciate is how family-friendly Shadowbrook is despite being such a fine establishment. They have coloring pages for kids, a varied children's menu, and even a little hat filled with toys that kids can choose from. Those small touches make it much easier to enjoy a special meal as a family. Without a doubt, Shadowbrook has become one of our favorite places for special occasions. And, of course, you can't talk about Shadowbrook without mentioning the iconic hillside cable car. It's the cherry on top and worth the ride every single time.

It had been many years since my last visit, and my nephew had most recently visited in December, so our prior experiences were quite varied. The restaurant's location and grounds are beautiful, and the food was good overall. Here are some specific highlights and areas for improvement: Upsides: We increased our party size from four to five earlier in the day, and the restaurant was able to accommodate the change. We were seated in the Greenhouse Room, which was lovely and offered great views. The appetizers and cocktails were very good. The prime rib and pork chop were particularly excellent, and I would definitely order either again. Downsides: The service left a lot to be desired. Our reservation was for 6:30 p.m., but we weren't seated until well after 7:00 p.m. Once seated, we waited about 20 minutes before our server came to the table. After taking our drink orders, were immediately asked if we were ready to order our entrées.  My wife and daughters ordered the Steak au Poivre. The steaks were under-seasoned and were not cooked to the requested temperatures. There seemed to be more emphasis on achieving prominent grill marks than developing a proper crust. Additionally, a staff member cleared my nephew's plate before he had finished eating. He's younger and didn't feel comfortable speaking up at the time, but he later told us he was still working on his meal. Given that this is not an inexpensive restaurant, I expected a higher level of service and more attentive staff training. That said, even with these shortcomings, I will definitely return. The restaurant itself and the surrounding grounds are truly remarkable and worth a visit on their own. I trust the food and service issues we experienced were outliers. Even great restaurants have an off night.

Chef Andrea, who is a professor of the culinary school, also offers a lot of options to customize the menu. For example, we wanted to incorporate chestnuts and dates into our menu. We had this Korean traditional ceremony where our parents gave us blessings with chestnuts and dates. Chef Andrea customized hors d'oeuvre to be roasted chestnut crostini. We also had desserts with them - chocolate chestnut cakes & a family-recipe date bar. It was awesome. Many people complimented our food, and it made me very happy because food is such an important factor in our lives (I am Korean and we live in NYC - food is all we care about haha). Students of culinary school prepared and served our food - it was such an honor to have those enthusiasm and joy on our big day. The venue comes with the day of coordinator - Chrissy. I can't say enough about her. She is the best. After the first meeting with her, I told my husband "I think we're in good hands". She is a seasoned professional who knows the ins and outs of the wedding. In general, it is a great venue with a great price & great staff. Highly recommend. Photo credit: @nicolejkimphotography

The Good: *Received a deal thru chase points *Hiking trails located on the property made it easy to plan a relaxing weekend without needing to drive. I enjoyed both trails, the redwoods were beautiful and healing. It would probably be good for corporate/team building excursions, especially with the ropes course, but that would require extra reservations. We walked by the ropes course on our hike but its normally closed without staff to facilitate. *Spa facilities were great (included steam room, sauna, and 3 hot tubs on the property. the gym was also quite large) There's a hot tub located in the spa area which also has a nice koi pond. locker rooms and showers are easy to use. *Check in is early at 4pm, and I was able to do a late checkout at 12pm. if you're only staying for one night, definitely come early so you can enjoy their spa facilities to the max. *2 large pools, one for adults and kids. the pool area in general is quite large with cabanas for lounging *beautiful more secluded property, with lots of open space *bathrobes provided in the room *courteous staff, especially the night security Victor was very attentive and accommodating. I would come back when he's working! *the smart temperature settings in my room was quite effective and easy to use. I liked the interface alot. *dog friendly! enjoyed greeting all the other pups staying on the property *nice indoor & outdoor lounge areas & outdoor sports available, like tennis & bocce ball *the view restaurant does boast live music during certain times The not so good: *the room facilities itself looked tired and outdated. the bathtub had black on the tiles *expected more extras included out this price point. Not much in terms of toiletries and coffee/tea, although the coffee machine was quite clean and new. *our "patio" didn't have any privacy because it overlooked the side of the pool and did not have any wall. So if we kept our patio screen curtains open, there was no privacy. *the room itself was also smaller than expected, for the price tag. *the View restaurant/bar closes at 9pm which seems quite early for an all inclusive bar. We opted for dinner out in Capitola (which was clearly the right choice) and I was hoping to come back and enjoy the hotel bar & view afterwards but everything was sadly closed. The nice security staff Victor came to pick me up in his golf cart and still allowed me to go outside for a bit just to sit and enjoy the view but it was dark with nothing to see, nothing to drink, and no one to socialize with. We came back the next day during the afternoon for a snack. The reviews said the view was better than the food, but tbh the view was also subpar imo. The restaurant is located on the top of a hill, which provides a good vantage point, but the view itself feels like the "back" of Santa cruz so it just wasn't much to look at. The nicer patio area of the outdoor restaurant area with lights and such was closed off for "private events" so I couldn't even take some nice photos there. The food was definitely not worth the prices, and service was quite slow. There was so much staff inside, but only one helping us sitting outside. *parking is $20 a night but they do have tesla chargers *the foodtruck next to the pool area was never open during our stay Overall, I would come back using my chase points, bring a pup with me, opt for a room with more privacy, and probably spend half my time at the spa.

My parents stayed here a couple decades ago when I graduated…read morein the area, so I had great memories of it, and was excited to stay for a milestone birthday weekend. Unfortunately, the stay was disappointing. While the furnishings have been recently updated, the property still felt very run down. Our room had a very strong chemical smell from the moment we arrived. I texted the front desk (there are no phones in the rooms), and they sent maintenance over. He agreed the smell was strange and thought it was coming from the mini fridge, which they replaced. Unfortunately, the smell remained for the entire weekend. It was to the point where my husband and I just said "ugh" every time we entered the room and immediately opened the screen door to try and air it out. We were told they couldn't move us because the hotel was fully booked, which I understand. What I don't understand is why there was no other solution or even any compensation offered for having to stay in a room that smelled strongly of something acrid all weekend. The next day, we also discovered a few dozen of ants on the counter around the bathroom sink. They were gone by that evening, but it was still pretty gross. There were some smaller disappointments, too: the TV offered streaming but wasn't connected to the internet, the bathtub initially ran rust-colored water from the tub faucet (the shower water was clear), and my husband's steak at the onsite restaurant arrived cold. We ultimately just tolerated everything and got through the weekend because there wasn't much else we could do. I don't expect a hotel to be perfect, and things go wrong. But especially for the prices, it was pretty bad and no one offered any solutions other than "the smell should get better now that the fridge is changed out" (it didn't). I was genuinely excited to stay here, so it's a shame that the experience fell so far short of expectations.
