We thought it would be a late night and hoped to have the kids in bed ~11pm. Oh boy were we wrong. We arrived about 10 mins early and were asked to take a seat downstairs and were told they were running about 15 minutes late. An hour later we were seated upstairs only after we chased down the hostess. So it's 10:30 and we go to place our orders straight away (we had plenty of time to study the menu). Unfortunately a lot of the dishes are not available including the shrimp cocktail. At 11:30 the starter comes out. And it's after midnight by the time our mains arrive. My wife and kids left the restaurant at ~12:45 and I joined the line to pay the bill. I was out there shortly after 1am. This was the worst service we have ever experienced. I gave them 2 stars because the restaurant itself is magnificent. It's built into the cliff face and overlooks the ocean. That said the lift you take to restaurant stinks and the bathroom did not have a lock. I checked the receipt today and realized they charged us for the shrimp cocktail they didn't have. If you must go to this place I recommend you book as early as possible before they get busy and everything goes sideways. Everyone in the restaurant was upset.

Tonight we shared the piri piri chicken, very hot sauce, and sea bass. Service was quick and the place was immediately full at seven. We ordered a bottle of Portuguese house red wine for $7.50. It was a 2021 edition but was really good, an Alicante Bouchet grape originally from France but transported to southern Portugal. The owner cooks the fish to order on a charcoal grill and it melted in your mouth. We also tried the house specialty, piri piri chicken. The chicken was so tender! We ordered the piri piri on the side as it is very hot. Our sides were chips, french fries in the US, which were addicting and a Portuguese salad with lettuce, onions, tomato, cucumbers and marinated green pepper in a tasty red wine vinegar dressing which perfectly complimented the fried and rich foods. The restaurant is very humble and a challenge to find but if you are in Alvor Lagos Portugal, make the effort to find it in the central part of town.
