Combination Plate with Teriyaki Chicken and Beef
McKena M.

As a Japanese-Filipino gal myself, I really appreciate Lu's Teriyaki for serving solid, straight-forward Japanese and Filipino food. I normally order Lu's combination plate with teriyaki chicken and beef (comes with rice, yakisoba noodles, and salad), and recently tried their banana lumpia as well. Let me start with the combo plate: While I wouldn't necessarily say this is a life-changing teriyaki plate, Lu's Teriyaki still satisfies my teriyaki craving and leaves me happy, full, and with leftover too, for a relatively affordable price of $12. For these reasons, I'm definitely a fan. The chicken is always cooked properly and I like that the beef is sliced thin and is generally pretty tender. I also like that the yakisoba noodles have a nice chew to them and are generously coated with teriyaki sauce. I like that the teriyaki sauce here leans more on the salty side rather than the sweet side. The only downside of the plate is that the salad portion is a bit small for my liking and that the lettuce can be a tad lukewarm since it's by the rest of the warm food. About the banana lumpia: I wish I tried these sooner...these are absolutely fantastic. Try it! I recently shared an order (2 pieces for $4) with my boyfriend, and I wish I got two orders just for me! I haven't had banana lumpia in years, and Lu's banana lumpia reminded me of the banana lumpia I'd eat as a kid in Hawaii at my Filipino family gatherings. The wrapping was perfectly fried and the banana filling tasted so good. I loved how ripe and sweet the bananas were, making the taste and texture of the filling absolutely perfect. When you're at the Piedmont Food Carts, this is a must get! One last thing to note - Lu's Teriyaki is right next to Spaghettaboutit. I noticed that Lu's had a sign posted that said something to the effect of: "If I'm not here, you can find me at Spaghettaboutit." Long story short, it turns out that the lady at Lu's (presumably Lu?) and the guy at Spaghettaboutit are husband and wife! How adorable is that? They both own food carts and have them located right next to each other. They are absolutely #relationshipgoals.

Chicken Adobo

*I've only ordered through Postmates, so eating at the cart itself might be different. I've eaten the food 4 or 5 times, and this is how I would rank the dishes. Lechon - delicious, best dish that the cart makes. The skin is nice and crispy and he just right amount of fat. Also the portion size is quite substantial. Teriyaki chicken - a little bit better than average, it's not the best, but it's definitely not the worst. Tempura - I usually order the bento and the tempura comes with it, and it's nothing special, but you do get a lot with the order and I love tempura. Kalua pork - had some good flavor and was very tender. Chicken adobo - eh. It was pretty bland and nothing about it was impressive. I would not order again. Overall I'm giving it 4 stars because the lechon is really good and the food is priced very reasonable.

This food cart is amazing. Ordered the chicken beef combo plate and they really went above and beyond. The person working was very friendly and service was great.

First time here, I had chicken teriyaki with a side of gyoza. Five stars for the food cart trifecta: fast, friendly and delicious.

The chicken adobo was unremarkable, just OK, and served a little cold (probably reheated when I ordered it.)

Well, after finally getting a chance to browse all the pods, I found Dad's chicken, but nothing was grillin'. So I came back here to Pares PDX Express instead. Checked out the side menu, checked out the prices, and out comes a brutha from anotha mutha! Welcomes me, so I asked my pare "What's good?" He said, "Everything!" smh, "Damn!" A good sign :(but not a good sign for me healthwise:) haha! I asked how long he's been open, and he said, "Since September." Still fresh and new to me, so my yelpie duty was to support my locals. Here's what I ordered: Drawn to the Crispy Kare-Kare ($15), this caught my eyes! (Optional read) Typically, the Filipino kare-kare meat used is with cuts of chuck steak and boney beef neck. Some like using pork hocks. Sometimes kare-kare will have beef tripe added. But personally for me, I love my mom's version using oxtail. I don't like the neck, I don't need tripe, it's gotta be OXTAIL!!! Besides, it's all about the stew and the saucy peanut buttery flavor. About Pares PDX kare-kare version... I saw "Crispy" and knew this was referring to either crispy pata or lechon kawali (aka deep fried pork belly with skin). They serve their kare-kare with crispy pork belly, bok choy, long string beans, and eggplant. The stew of peanut sauce was drizzled on top. With the home-made shrimp bagoong (fried shrimp paste) in between. I would have stayed outside on the patio tables, but it was going to rain. So I rushed home, and mmm mmm mmm the pieces were still nice and crispy indeed! I haven't had pork belly in so long that I was in heaven, not worrying if I needed to go to the hospital afterwards lol. You can have the dish with plain rice or garlic rice. I chose the garlic rice, which is almost a given. A bit of more information: ~ They've got a QR code to view the menu and/or place an order. ~ Majority or nearly all of the dishes were $15 average. ~ To feed your eyes, there are pics of the dishes on the side of the truck. ~ Service was pleasant and fast. Can't say I'll ever order what I can make myself, like adobo, sisig, pinoy style spaghetti, or lumpia, but I will definitely be back to try their version of pansit palabok, laing, dinuguan, and turon. I'll even try their "halo halo" next time! The Filipino authenticity, kinda like mom's style is here! Come check them out!

Multiple times now, I have placed an order, watched the status change to "Confirmed" and even "Preparing," only for the restaurant or their system to cancel the order abruptly after the Dasher is already assigned or on their way. This is not just a minor inconvenience; it completely wastes time and effort planning a meal. A major contributing factor is that they frequently forget to close and update their DoorDash channel, showing they are available for online ordering when they are not. It gives the false hope that the food is on its way, only to be cancelled last minute, forcing a scramble to find dinner/lunch elsewhere. The management needs to seriously address their online order process, communication with delivery platforms, and their kitchen capacity. If you cannot fulfill an order, it should be rejected immediately, not 30-40 minutes after confirmation. Until this issue is fixed, I cannot recommend ordering from here, especially for delivery. It's too unreliable to depend on.

My partner and I got the grilled bbq chicken and the bbq short ribs + marinated beef. Unfortunately, the deep fried chicken was sold out for the day (we came in about 45 minutes until closing so perhaps our fault). I think because of the time we came in- we got kitchen scraps. The short ribs were 90% fat and 10% actual meat. The macaroni salad was incredibly plain, it needed more seasoning - pepper something because it straight up looked it was pasta with slabbed mayo. I will however give a shot out to their poke because I don't eat seafood nor like it and I did give this a try for the fun of it and it was delicious. Again I think because we came in 40-45 minutes before closing closing the service was not great either. I saw the self service bottles of sauce and when I came back I asked the lady for one and she said she had run out when it was pretty clear she was just cleaning up. Fair- you want to get out of there on time. So I asked the lady for hot sauce and she said it was extra and charged me $1.00 per 2.5oz container which is just diabolical in my opinion- I still paid none the less so it's my dusky for contribution to the fiasco. Overall it was mid, I'm used to much more flavorful food in Los Angeles. Ill give it another go whenever I'm in the area at a different time. Perhaps it was a one off day for them.

The sisig and garlic rice were absolute standouts that were deeply flavorful and the dishes I'd come back for if this review were based on food alone. The Mama's crab noodles also left a huge impression. The coconut greens were close to excellent, though they felt just a little thin or underdeveloped compared to the other dishes. I'd probably pass on the skewers next time. Cocktails were incredible across the board. The reason I wouldn't return is the experience around seating. We made reservations far in advance and even accommodated a requested time change because we specifically wanted to celebrate inside. Instead, we were bumped outside, where we ended up eating next to the neighboring bar with a steady stream of chain smokers all evening. It was frustrating to have such exceptional food paired with an anniversary experience that felt like an afterthought.
