For a small metro area largely unknown even elsewhere in it's own state, the Greater Binghamton area aka the Triple Cities (a historic nickname which referred to Binghamton and it's neighboring former cities turned villages of Johnson City and Endicott) punches wildly above it's weight with it's highly unique hyper-regional cuisine. Among the waves of immigrants brought to the area during it's numerous boom cycles, first as the world shoe-making capitol and later and the original home of IBM and other massive corporations, were Italians who developed among other dishes, the culinary pride of the region, the Spiedie. Skewered cubes of various meats, supposedly originally lamb but now more likely chicken and pork are marinated in a deliciously herbaceous, acidic and garlic heavy blend and spit cooked to perfection, and served in wonderfully crusty sub bread, it's served at bars, diners, pizzerias and elsewhere grilled up in backyard barbecues with store bought marinades at area groceries, and is so beloved it serves as the centerpiece of a annual "Spiedie-fest" food festival and competition. This decades old Endicott takeout institution with a few picnic tables outside and a glorious vintage mid-century sign is widely considered one of the Spiedie GOATS, and is an excellent spot to get a taste of the dish with an extra helping of local flavor. I sampled two of the smaller 6 inch subs one each of pork chicken. Both were marinaded to perfection and accompanied by some of the most perfectly crusty fresh made hero bread I can ever remember having which perfectly absorbed the gloriously flavorful marinade. Oddly enough and consistent with all my previous Spiedie experiences, somehow shockingly it was the chicken which was by far the juicier of the two proteins, while the pork was just the slightest bit on the dry side, although both were extremely tasty. I don't know if this has to due with the respective cuts of pork and chicken that are used for the Spiedies or some alchemy caused by the reaction between the chicken and the marinade, but I am hard pressed to think of another dish where the chicken would be the more juicy of the meats on offer. This curious fact was reinforced by the chicken being slightly more expensive than the pork option. Both were still astonishingly under 6 dollars each, reinforcing the reverse sticker shock you often encounter when seeing the low prices on menus when eating in the area. The merciful pricing continues across the menu, which offers a wide variety of non-spiedie options like Beef and Ham BBQ and Kielbasa subs, burgers and dogs, potato and macaroni salads and much more. I also grabbed a side of gloriously greasy fried pierogis along with my spiedies for $4.55, of which I was only able to enjoy one of due to how stuffed I was from the subs, before packing it up for a snack later. End result; massively delicious, supremely filling meal + leftovers and local anthropology study in one for $16 total. read more

Best speedies ever! Grilled 5 pounds this week for family event. Chicken was tender, flavorful and juicy! Yum!!!!

After seeing all the rave reviews, I thought this might be a good place for a simple dinner despite the distance I had to drive to go to get my food. I took the food to go and when I got to my hotel, I noticed that the large onion rings must've been substituted for the small onion rings as there was only four or five tiny onion ring, which was extremely disappointing. The cheese steak that I ordered was gristly and had almost absolutely zero onions on there, even though I ordered the cheesesteak with cheese and onions. In a word, disappointed. read more

Got home with my pork spiedie and although the outside of the bun was very greasy, inside the pork was DRY DRY DRY. Plus the bland pierogies were puffy, fried and dried. Retro charm? BTW, I also like the spiedie place on upper Front Street (I'm not naming it here), but since they hired "management consultants" to "maximize profit potential," it looks like any generic franchise and it has lost its charm. Born and raised in Endicott, this has been our go to spiedie sandwich shop. I believe it's the original......decades old. There is no seating. Having both pork and chicken spiedies plus many more subs and sandwiches, Lupo's is a local institution. During good weather, there is a pavilion with picnic tables; bad weather, it's your car or to go. Onions rings are famous, too. read more

This place is just amazing, I wish there was one in nyc, it would be a sensation. Don't confuse this Lupo's with either the readily available marinade with the same name in stores, it's not the same company, and is no where near as good as the marinade or product sold at the endicott location. This is my favorite sandwich.... anywhere on the planet, and I live in NYC and have travelled to almost 50 countries, nothing is close in my opinion. Please go if you're in the area, get the fried peppers on your hero, get the 12"...if you live far away, and can't frequent the store, buy the marinated meat to take home. It's been several years since I lived in Broome County, but my craving for their sandwiches has me ordering their marinade in hopes of duplicating their unique and awesome taste. The place gets busy at times, but the staff are efficient and the food is excellent. Even when the wait gets long (at most 15 min or so), I've never seen a bad worker-customer interaction. Lupo's was recommended by a former local and said this was the best place to try a spiedie and it sure did not disappoint! I ordered the chicken spiedie which was juicy and fresh. I've had spiedies many times in my life, but always at home since I live in Ohio. This was my first time having a traditional spiedie in Binghamton and it was even better than any of the ones I've had. The bread was soft but held it's shape and didn't fall apart. The chicken was very flavorful, juicy, and plentiful in the sandwich. I also tried their fries and they were hot, crispy, and perfectly salted. I really enjoyed my meal here and their prices are very fair. They only take cash so make sure to bring some with you! read more

Been going to this place for half a century, ever since junior high school where it was a 10 minute walk. It's a stand up and order place and if you don't know what you want, step aside and let someone else order. The staff aren't friendly and I don't want them to be. I always loved lamb spiedies, but Lupo's chicken is pretty darn good. They pack a lot of meat into their sub rolls. We both got a 12" and could not finish them. They made a great lunch the next day and warmed up fine. Fries were above average. Great value. Lupo's is all carry out and we did not to wait long for our food. Great service. read more

I lived in the area 40 years ago and miss Spiedies to this day. We were driving from Oklahoma to New Hampshire and went out of our way to stop in Endicott for Lupo's Spiedies. We often eat at Lupo's for a quick hamburger. It's quick, delicious, and affordable. I love that everything is fresh and you have many choices to choose from. I like that you can put a lot on your hamburger, even mushrooms. Their cookies are great, too. I took a star off because I always order Jumbo Hamburger, but for some reason, they put cheese in it unless I specify "NO CHEESE". Though sometimes they don't get it right so I started checking my sandwich each time I get the order. This is the epicenter of my universe when I come into town. I look so forward to having a chicken and pork spedie from here. And, the fries and onion rings are great too. This is one of the best pieces of true Americana left - and I cannot believe they have not been featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Don't forget to bring cash. I think this is the only restaurant that I patronize in a year that still only takes cash, but it's worth the hassle to go to an ATM first! They make great salads with the spedies too, if you want to be healthier. However, you only live once, and if you don't live nearby here you aren't having this often. I love Lupo's food! The speedies are terrific. The bread is terrific. Their fries are great -salty and crispy. And recently I also tried their kielbasa and I think it's the best kielbasa I have ever tasted, mild and slightly smokey. Normally kielbasa has an intense flavor which can be overwhelming but Lupo's kielbasa was amazing!!! While I love their food, the service/cashier at the Endicott location is not what I would call customer friendly. Everyone has bad days, but some people aren't meant to be customer-facing. After several visits, every experience with the cashier has been the same, like ordering from the soup guy on Seinfeld. That said, go to Lupo's to enjoy their fabulous food. read more

In case you're curious it's spelled "speidi" and pronounced "speedy." It's nice knowing going in so you can sound like a local. I am *not* a local and was excited to try the sandwich that has it's own festival (not kiding)! I ordered the chicken speidi and it was fantastic - the flavor of the marinade, the char on the chicken, and the meat was still juicy. I thought the bread could have been better - it was simply a vehicle for the meat. I also ordered the fried pierogies. They were good as was the horseradish sour cream that came with it. But it's the speidi I'd come back for. I ever bought a botle of marinade in hopes I can make them back home (with better bread!) read more
