    Portuguese Green Wine

Loved this little mom and pop restaurant. The food was amazing and authentically Portuguese. My Portuguese husband was very pleased since we do not have any Portuguese restaurants near where we live. Everything was flavorful, and dining on the quaintly decorated patio added a homey and romantic feeling to our date night. The staff is very friendly and had some great recommendations. We will definitely go back whenever we are in town.

After a recent trip to Portugal, we lamented ever finding that level of fresh seafood and deliciousness in Toronto. Luna Junction is as close as we can get! We came on a whim for a Saturday night dinner and grabbed a seat in the empty dining area as everyone was in the patio out back. We started with their Romaine and Radicchio Salad and the Roasted Cauliflower on Hummus. The roasted cauliflower was delicious and paired perfectly with the hummus (something I will probably replicate in the future). The salad tasted like a ceaser salad, with it's lemon anchovy dressing but was much lighter and fresher. We followed with the Arroz de Tamboril e Mariasco (rice stew with monkfish, mussels and jumbo shrimp) and the Whole European Seabass. Both were absolutely delicious, with the rice stew being the star of the show. The stew took a while to come, but that is understandable as it is a large pot of food enough for 3. Just don't order when starving or it will be long wait. We ended the night with the homemade chocolate mousse tart. Fudgy, creamy and decadent.... the perfect end to the meal!

Luna Junction has been on my list of places to eat at forever! I'm so glad we stopped by for dinner and I already know I'll be returning for more. We ordered Spicy Portuguese Jumbo Shrimp, Fire Roasted Okra, Polvo a Lagareiro (Grilled Portuguese Octopus with Black-eyed Peas and rapini). Literally everything was mouth-wateringly delicious, cooked or charred perfectly, and with so much flavour. The Octopus I still dream about, it was 10/10 so soft and had generous portions. I will definitely be back to try some of their other seafood dishes!

Came to Luna Junction with my friends for a delicious lunch! I got the breakfast shakshuka ($18) which consisted two organic eggs poached in a (not so) spicy pepper and tomato sauce with Merguez Lamb sausage, spinach, sheep's milk feta and fresh herbs with sourdough toast. This is the first time had lamb in a really long time and it was flavourful and not tough at all. I liked the slight kick from the pepper. Compared to the shakshuka I had before, this one was way more balanced, tasty, and fresh. I loved the sourdough toast as well but felt there wasn't enough bread (I'm a sucker for bread). For drinks, I got the iced hibiscus rose tea which I wasn't a strong fan of because of the hibiscus but that was on me. Their other drinks look more promising. Service was lovely! Definitely recommend.

This is a review for their brunch. I came with a large group to celebrate a birthday. There was lots of street parking available in front of the restaurant. The restaurant itself isn't too big but they had enough room for us in the back. The kitchen is small though so they took our orders 5 at a time, resulting in members of our party eating at different times. I got the buttermilk pancakes with got chocolate. The pancakes were delicious and filling. The hot chocolate was good but not too sweet. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meals. The Salmon Benny look really good as well so I'll definitely try it next time I'm in the area!

    Polvo a Lagareiro
(Grilled Portuguese Octopus with Black-eyed Peas, Sauteed Greens & Garlic Herb Pesto)

Like all the best stories, this one begins with an octopus. While scouting for our next great dining adventure, my wife stumbled across Luna quite by accident. Drawn in by the stunning website imagery and the tantalizing Mediterranean fare, our fate was ultimately sealed by the sighting of a particular dish: Polvo a Lagareiro -- grilled Portuguese octopus with black-eyed peas, sautéed greens, and garlic herb pesto. With my wife's birthday celebration imminent, we had no choice but to give Luna a try and we were so glad we did! From the cosy, intimate atmosphere, to the friendly and efficient serving staff (thanks Kate!) to the warm and approachable owner, Tom, and his chef-wife Bernie, it was the perfect storm of dining pleasures. My wife did, indeed, have the Polvo a Lagareiro and I was allowed a taste; tender and well-seasoned, it did not disappoint! But don't feel too sad for me as I had chosen a winner of a dish for myself: Bitoque -- a 10 oz striploin topped with crispy prosciutto and a fried egg, served with a green salad. (For a small additional fee, I opted for the crispy potatoes instead of the sweet potato chips, but I don't think I could have gone wrong either way.) My steak was cooked to perfection -- medium rare, toward rare, just the way I ordered it -- and was well-seasoned in the best of ways. The prosciutto added a wonderful texture while the fried egg (a common Portuguese addition, I'm given to understand) lent the dish a certain indulgent richness. We had skipped the appetizer to ensure we had room for dessert (we can rarely work in three courses) and were not disappointed. My wife had the Lemon Cheesecake while I had the Chocolate Torte. Both offered the perfect amount of decadence on which to end our meal -- sated without being stuffed. And as we watched as patrons filled in the seats around us and quietly settled into Luna's abundant comforts, it suddenly became clear that this hidden gem had only been hidden from us, as the rest of the world seemed to be in on its secrets. But it's a secret no more and we will definitely be returning to sample more of Luna's treasures. Thanks so much to Tom, Bernie, Kate, and the wonderful kitchen and support staff for a great evening!

Beautiful evening for 4. We shared two appies and 3 mains so we could manage dessert. It was all so beautifully prepared and presented. Service was warm and professional. The background playlist was perfect. The octopus was a standout as were the ribs that fell off the bone. 5 stars plus!

A friend and I visited Luna Junction for the first time for lunch recently. The place is small, cosy and homey. We were greeted shortly after we walked in and told to choose any table to sit at. We were brought menus shortly thereafter. I ordered the peameal bacon sandwich and my friend ordered the smoked salmon sandwich. They arrived after only ten minutes and were each served on nice, crusty buns and accompanied with mixed greens salads. The salads were nice, albeit a little underdressed. However, the dressing had a light, citrus flavour and was quite good. The buns were lovely and fresh and there was plenty of filing in both. The washrooms are down a very steep staircase, but were clean and well-stocked. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and we'd both be happy to return in the future.

I was here for dinner last night with 2 amazing friends and the food was incredible! We shared several of the small sharing plates and 2 of the large ones. The food was so flavourful, fresh and delicious. Oh, and the dessert.... fantastic! We had the lemon ricotta cheesecake which is made in house. Soooo good! Our waitress and the owner were also so friendly and nice. We will be back!

An excellent brunch spot that is kid friendly, with very nice service and delicious food. I had the artichoke wrap and it was phenomenal. My daughter loved her pancake with fruit. They also have a back patio. We will be back for sure!

There were four of us and ordered the sangria to share between three of us which was a lot but refreshing. Apps were Lucas Freitas (fried calamari) and Chourico a Bombeiro (flaming sausage). Both were delicious. I forgot to mention the bread and Piri Piri Sauce which came in the form of a large bottle. These were complimentary and it's nice to see a restaurant continue this tradition. There used to be a very crusty artisan bread that was served but over the years that has disappeared and it's a white bread now. Three of us had chicken/chicken breast and one had veal. Even the small portion was very generous. The salad was underwhelming but a pretty presentation. The server got a couple of orders wrong and seemed very distracted. The piece de resistance was the "Portuguese Tarts" which made a wonderful finale to a good Al fresco dining experience.

Return visits while in Toronto (2 of 3)…read more I came back to Perla and its appeal, at least to me, is very much still there. You are greeted upon walking in to this family run Portuguese restaurant. This time, I tried a bitoque, a steak with an egg on top. It would be on the list of 10 typical entrees you'd find in a Portuguese restaurant. It was preceded by a salad, for which I selected the Caesar salad option. I followed it up with a dessert which was a goblet with a frothy type of gelatin, pudding, or mousse. The flavor was either passion fruit or guava. I forgot what it was immediately upon leaving because I devoured it so quickly! The frothiness made it lighter, such that it wouldn't weigh you down. By now, you should be able to tell this was a very good meal. A few things round out the experience. The bread was accompanied by a pate' or dip of sorts. It was excellent. I didn't know what it was, therefore I asked. It had tuna as well as a good number of other ingredients. Together, it did not taste very fishy or potent in any way, except incredibly flavorful. Their cuisine is representative of all of Portugal, although Perla's roots are in Northern Portugal. The painted ceramic rooster for good luck one often sees hails from Barcelos, just slightly north of the Porto area. In fact, the fueling and rest areas on the toll road through Barcelos have these modern metallic renditions of the rooster that are minimalistic silhouettes you look right through. I might add a few other things that made me glad I returned to Perla. For one, Lusophones are well represented among the customers. But, more importantly, they fill an important niche for me since so many Portuguese locales miss this mark. They are essentially a reliable mid-range restaurant with a broad enough menu. Here, you can avoid the end points that I don't much care for or seek - the piri piri (or peri peri) chicken places where you accompany your order with a pastel de nata that the "hey, wow man" types (at least on the Plateau in Montreal) tend to frequent and the high-end restaurants where Portuguese leans haute cuisine, a lot is about presentation, and the portions are small. (In Montreal, one such place should immediately come to mind.) I was happy that I stopped by, using the TTC card with which you can avoid the crazy Toronto traffic and parking hassles. The College Street streetcar practically stops in front of Perla's door. It all adds up. The team running this restaurant puts their hearts into their work. I am going to go with 5 stars, with each one representing a letter in the word P-E-R-L-A.

For dessert, I had the vanilla meringue dessert. It was good but by this point I was so full. The slice was huge, but the meringue just melted in your mouth. Staff were friendly off the bat and very attentive after each dish was finished, making sure to wipe off the table or exchanging the plates which I was really impressed with despite how busy they were. We decided to go with their tasting menu where you gave them a price range you wanted to stick to - I believe it was $85-$200, and you can mention some dishes you definitely want to try and they curate the rest for you which I thought was so unique! I loved the idea of that. The dishes we really wanted were the octopus, bone marrow and scallops. The only standout dishes to me were the scallops, and a salad I cannot remember the name of but was so shocked at how good just a simple salad could be. Other than that, the other dishes were still good, but nothing extraordinary to be honest. The octopus was a bit too charred which was disappointing as it was what I was looking forward to the most. The tasting menu we got also had mainly vegetable dishes (other than the ones I just mentioned), so was hoping to get a few more meat dishes. This is definitely a great spot for vegetarians as it had a lot of veggie dishes. I would still come back to maybe try some of their other more meat focused dishes.
