Lumbini Hut has been one of my favourite restaurants in Ajax since discovering it a few months ago. Their Nepali cuisine is so delicious, hitting all the right notes on my palette. It's savoury, very flavourful, well prepared, and nicely presented. On this visit, our group sat on their spacious patio, recently opened for the season. Our evening started with cocktails and live entertainment. Refreshing. Great start! That was followed by their delicious appetizers and mains, all beautifully presented. * Pani Puri * Vegetable Tandoori Momo * Vegetable Steamed Momo * Chilli Chicken Momo * Wai Wai Sadeko * Dragon Chicken * Chilli Paneer * Chilli Chicken * Sekuwa Chicken * Vegetable Chow Mein * Vegetable Thakali Thali * Mutton Thakali Thali Our choices included veg and non-veg selections and we enjoyed every bite. Everything was flavourful and more than satisfying. Delicious! For special events, they have private banquet facilities on the lower level that can accommodate up to 150ppl. My friend lives around the corner from this spot. He said he's never been, so tonight we changed that! The interior is decorated beautifully. The servers are wearing traditional garments and there is beautiful artwork on the walls . Friday - Sunday they even have live music. They have a large space in the restaurant for parties and events. After speaking with the owner, I found the upstairs event space can accommodate 50 patrons and the downstairs hall can host 200! Wow. Now onto the exciting part; The food. We ordered a couple different dishes and shared Dahi Puri Chicken Choyela Chicken Steam Momo's Chicken Chow Mein Thakali Set - Mutton Paratha I'm a huge Dahi Puri lover. This version blew me away... The flavor profile was perfection. ( My friend LOVED this dish as well. ) Next up were the Momo's. They're known for their Momo's. I do prefer a steamed Momo, so we went with steamed chicken. The portion size was quite large and the dipping sauce paired well; they had so much flavor. The next appetizer dish was one I have never had before; Chicken Choyela. I generally don't enjoy crunchy / textured foods but my friend quite enjoyed the puffed rice addition of this dish. The chicken had a unique flavor, unlike anything I've had before. It was solid. Their Chow Mein is another dish that they're known for. I seem to prefer noodles over rice these days. (But, I'm generally disappointed with most places noodles.) These were SUPERB! They had a smoky flavor to them and were a 10/10. I've had Thali but never a Thakali. While similar, they are different; We chose the mutton option. This dish was incredibly tender and bursting with flavors. Dish after dish impressed us. This spot hits all the right notes and is a definite must visit if you're in the area. I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find there was a Nepali restaurant in Ajax. I rarely have the opportunity to get Nepali food in my hometown, and it was nice to have such a pleasant sit down experience. Being that it was Good Friday, I wasn't sure all stores and restaurants were open. So I called ahead to check, and I was in luck! So after a long walk through the Toronto Zoo, I headed back to Ajax for a late lunch/early dinner. The location of Lumbini Hut is great. It's on a corner with access to the parking in back from the side street or a driveway on the east side of the building. There was plenty of parking on a holiday at 3pm, so no worries for me. I could see this lot getting filled up on a regular Friday night though. Walking in, you immediately feel transported to another place. The server was wearing traditional clothing, and the decor evoked a sense of price and love for the Nepali culture. The choice of the tablewear (gold cups and silverware) added to the sense of place far from western culture. There was only one other party in the restaurant when I arrived, but the soon left, and I was alone. It was a little sad to be experiencing this place alone, but nonetheless I did enjoy. I knew immediately that I was going to order Chatpate. This was a dish my former Nepali students back home used to make for me. The puffed rice and mix of spices and bits of vegetable is not something I could ever replicate, and I was so excited to have it. I also ordered pani puri because I'd never tried it before and it looked very good in photos I'd seen. I ate these two dishes first and savored every bit. The chatpate was crispy and flavorful (not to spicy, but lots of flavor), and the pani puri were beautiful and tasted great too. The accompanying sauce (not sure what it was, but had cilantro and other herbs) was delicious and I dribbled that over both dishes for added flavor. After eating halfway through these dishes, I realized how cold I was from my day at the zoo. I asked about my tea, because I was looking to warm up, but I also decided I had enough room for some chicken momo. I ordered the steamed kind that comes in a basket. My Nepali Tea was a milk tea and very smooth. It was not too spicy like chai can sometimes be. Instead it was very mild and perfect for what I wanted. Then my momos came out. The presentation on all the food was beautiful, even the momos. What I noticed first was how they did not stick to each other. I think it is a feat of cooking to make dumplings that don't stick to each other or the container. So this was a good sign. Then the aroma wafted over... it seemed like the smell of a homemade chicken soup - the kind your grandma makes. It was so inviting. The momos were served with a yellow sauce on the side. I wasn't sure if I liked it at first, but the mix of spices made the momo's more interesting. To be honest though, they didn't need any topping. They were fantastic by themselves, and I wanted to devour them all right there. I did end up taking some home and eating them for breakfast the next day. The retained their quality even the next morning! Since I was alone in the restaurant, I had the chance to talk with my server a bit. It was a pleasure to talk with her, and she mentioned how they were only open now for about 5 months. I was really surprised by this, and I really hope that the word gets out and they stay in business. They offer live music on Friday nights which you can find out more about on their facebook page. And they are more than just a restaurant, the are an event venue as well. I think they have great potential for success, and highly recommend you try this place out, whether your just passing through like me, or a seasoned resident of Ajax. read more

Very nice!!! SOOO Excited to know we have another MOMO place in Durham! I learned about this place through the local (Durham) FB food info group. We had (Take out) the following items: #1. Chicken Steamed Momo - I loved the signature sauce that came with this. Nutty and hot - it is more than chili sauce. The filling hits the perfect seasoning balance, YUMMY~ personally, the wrapper wanted more texture and flavor in its own, but it's just my personal preference. #2. Pani Puri - super crispy even when it's take-out. Usually, when I take out Pani Puri for take out elsewhere, by the time I am home it gets a bit soggy. But here, it remained very crispy. May be because the filling was mashed beans, not fresh veggie. I put 3 teaspoons of tamarind water in each piece just before putting it to the mouth - the shell was still crispy in the mouth, Holding the liquid in the shell:) The tamarind water came with pani puri in a separate container - it had a very good balance of sweet, sour and saltiness, with freshly chopped coriander leaves), adding some refreshing taste to Pani puri. Personally I may want add fresh veggie on my own next time, like diced tomatoes and chopped fresh onions for extra texture and freshness. #3. Lachha Paratha : It is unique style of roti/chapati like flatbread with whole wheat and rich layers of butter. Flaky, but moist. Loved this texture and savory flavor! #4. Chana Masala Hot, and it's "multidimensional" hot, with multiple layers of stimulants. Liked this! #5. Bara Mix Another savory one, it is a spiced lentil patties or pancake with egg & minced meat. Yummy! All the food was great. The service was polite, the menu is very unique which stimulates my curiosity and allows me to discover my new taste buds with trust. Highly recommend! read more

This has definitely become our go to place for delicious Nepali food. We were recommended this place by a few friends. Everything we have tried has been delicious. Their soups hit the spot on a cold wintery day. The salt and pepper corn, chilli paneer, and gobi manchurian have really good flavours. The dragon chicken is definitely something I can order every time. The schezwan fried rice and chow mein was a perfect blend of flavours. The service is quick and they are very polite. The live music was definitely a plus. We will definitely be going back and would highly recommend! read more

We did takeout...... food was nice and spicy. Portions were smaller than other comparable restaurants but the food was good overall!

It's a true delight to experience the one and only authentic Nepali restaurant in GTA - Lumbini Hut, located in Ajax. Nearly every dish we tried was absolutely delicious, bringing the familiar taste of home (Nepal) right to the table. The service was top-notch, with incredibly friendly staff that made us feel welcome. The ambiance perfectly captures the essence of Nepal, and the live music on Friday evenings is the cherry on top, adding an extra special touch to the dining experience.
