    Nepali Tea
    Joley B.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find there was a Nepali restaurant in Ajax. I rarely have the opportunity to get Nepali food in my hometown, and it was nice to have such a pleasant sit down experience. Being that it was Good Friday, I wasn't sure all stores and restaurants were open. So I called ahead to check, and I was in luck! So after a long walk through the Toronto Zoo, I headed back to Ajax for a late lunch/early dinner. The location of Lumbini Hut is great. It's on a corner with access to the parking in back from the side street or a driveway on the east side of the building. There was plenty of parking on a holiday at 3pm, so no worries for me. I could see this lot getting filled up on a regular Friday night though. Walking in, you immediately feel transported to another place. The server was wearing traditional clothing, and the decor evoked a sense of price and love for the Nepali culture. The choice of the tablewear (gold cups and silverware) added to the sense of place far from western culture. There was only one other party in the restaurant when I arrived, but the soon left, and I was alone. It was a little sad to be experiencing this place alone, but nonetheless I did enjoy. I knew immediately that I was going to order Chatpate. This was a dish my former Nepali students back home used to make for me. The puffed rice and mix of spices and bits of vegetable is not something I could ever replicate, and I was so excited to have it. I also ordered pani puri because I'd never tried it before and it looked very good in photos I'd seen. I ate these two dishes first and savored every bit. The chatpate was crispy and flavorful (not to spicy, but lots of flavor), and the pani puri were beautiful and tasted great too. The accompanying sauce (not sure what it was, but had cilantro and other herbs) was delicious and I dribbled that over both dishes for added flavor. After eating halfway through these dishes, I realized how cold I was from my day at the zoo. I asked about my tea, because I was looking to warm up, but I also decided I had enough room for some chicken momo. I ordered the steamed kind that comes in a basket. My Nepali Tea was a milk tea and very smooth. It was not too spicy like chai can sometimes be. Instead it was very mild and perfect for what I wanted. Then my momos came out. The presentation on all the food was beautiful, even the momos. What I noticed first was how they did not stick to each other. I think it is a feat of cooking to make dumplings that don't stick to each other or the container. So this was a good sign. Then the aroma wafted over... it seemed like the smell of a homemade chicken soup - the kind your grandma makes. It was so inviting. The momos were served with a yellow sauce on the side. I wasn't sure if I liked it at first, but the mix of spices made the momo's more interesting. To be honest though, they didn't need any topping. They were fantastic by themselves, and I wanted to devour them all right there. I did end up taking some home and eating them for breakfast the next day. The retained their quality even the next morning! Since I was alone in the restaurant, I had the chance to talk with my server a bit. It was a pleasure to talk with her, and she mentioned how they were only open now for about 5 months. I was really surprised by this, and I really hope that the word gets out and they stay in business. They offer live music on Friday nights which you can find out more about on their facebook page. And they are more than just a restaurant, the are an event venue as well. I think they have great potential for success, and highly recommend you try this place out, whether your just passing through like me, or a seasoned resident of Ajax.

I stumbled upon this place today while walking around my neighbourhood. I love Indian food so, of…read morecourse, I had to investigate. Apparently, they've only been open a couple of weeks. Walking in, the space is mostly kitchen, with no seating (under COVID conditions). The previous (burger) restaurant that occupied this space before had only two tables of two and a counter in the window. There are currently two tables of four set up under a tent in the parking spaces directly in front of the restaurant. These tables could have been cleaner. In addition to TV screens hanging from the ceiling, there is a large menu on the wall with (I'm guessing) their six most popular items. I ordered the Tandoori(?) chicken from this menu. It included two leg quarters, salad, rice, naan, and a drink for only $9.99. Not a bad deal. It took about fifteen minutes for my order to be completed. A few other customers were ahead of me, also waiting, some impatiently. Once ready, I sat at one of the tables out front. Hmmm, no napkins? Only a spoon to eat with? Where's my drink? Once I got that sorted, it was time to eat. The chicken was a tad on the dry side and the flavours a bit understated. The salad consisted of lettuce, cucumbers, and red onions. The naan was large and fresh. The rice was plentiful, nice and fluffy. I'm used to bolder flavours in Indian cuisine. Overall, it was just okay. I'm used to bold flavours but I found the chicken a bit underseasoned. While the food wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as I was anticipating. Hopefully, these issues will be sorted out in time. PS - The fly strips hanging in the restaurant were a bit of a turn off.

I haven't had a chance to get to Zeera during the pandemic and I have missed it terribly so tonight I hopped onto Uber Eats and placed an order! I opted for some oldies but goodies and a couple of dishes I hadn't tried before. The bread basket is definitely a must have. All of their naan is delicious and I can never choose just one kind. Why not get an assortment? The other staple I ordered was Aloo Gobi. Perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked, as always. The dishes I hadn't tried before at Zeera were their chicken biryani and paneer korma. Both dishes were incredible and I will definitely order them again. I've had saag paneer countless times but I've never heard of paneer korma. I love korma so how could I go wrong? A definite winner! (I made my own Raita though.) When you compare price to serving sizes, it's one of the more expensive restaurants I go to but when I'm in the mood for Indian cuisine, Zeera is my go-to!

I'm not sure how long they've been there or why I hadn't noticed them before but I'm always up for a good curry so we popped in for dinner. The menu is quite extensive and it took us a while to look over everything. Since this was our first time here, we opted for dishes we were familiar with so we could benchmark them against our favourite Indian restaurant. Our selection consisted of Aloo Gobi Masala, Tandoori Butter Chicken, Malai Lamb Curry, Super Naan, Masala Raita and Basmati Rice. Everything looked and smelled amazing so we were excited to tuck in. First, I have to say, this Aloo Gobi has set the bar higher and is now the benchmark by which all future Aloo Gobi dishes will be compared against. The curry dishes were also amazing. In fairness, ordering butter chicken was safe, but we also wanted to have something we hadn't tried before. You can never go wrong with lamb and the description of the Malai Lamb Curry sounded irresistible... it left me gobsmacked. Are you kidding me? This dish is packed with flavour and the lamb was cooked to perfection. We actually considered packing up the rest of the sauce to bring home. Honestly, it's that good. Definitely a MUST! Absolutely everything from start to finish was delicious. The owner/chef (?) came out for a chat and to regale us with descriptions of other dishes to try next time... and believe me, there will definitely be a next time! Have I just found my new favourite Indian restaurant? I think I might have.

Although Daal Roti has been open for four years now, and is very close to home, this was my first time dining here. The food was decent but it wasn't very warm, and appeared a bit sparse. I had scrolled through their Instagram and really loved the fact that I could get Thali here! It takes me back to when I would got for a curry in England. There's just something about all the little dishes with flavourful treats that just makes me happy. We arrived shortly after 1pm on a Friday and there was just one other couple in the restaurant. There's not a lot of seating so I would imagine this place is bustling on the weekends with their buffet. The restaurant is tidy and the gentleman who served us was really nice and very helpful. After looking at the menu and having a chat with the waiter, I opted for the non-veg Thali. Apparently, it's normally a takeaway dish but for an additional $2, you can have it in the restaurant. So, we had assumed the reason for the extra couple of quid was because they would be using proper dishes and the extra labour for cleaning that, etc. etc.. Apparently not. We were both taken aback when our lunch was served to us in a plastic takeaway container. I'm not going to lie, it was a little disappointing. Part of dining out at a restaurant is the experience and plastic just doesn't cut it. The food was really good and there certainly was plenty of it. We were both satisfied with our lunch and I would definitely come back again to try other dishes. I'm not sure I would order this dish again though, given the presentation. Because of that, I can only give this restaurant a 3-star at this time.
