A hidden gem! This is my second time at Lum Thai and both times I forgot to take pics because the food comes out looking so appetizing. I got the Chicken Wings as my appetizer and their portions are well worth it (8-10 wings for $10). The wings come out super crispy and juicy and the sauce is fantastic. For my entree this time, I got the Crispy Duck Ka Prao which is a signature dish. The duck was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was amazing. Highly recommend! The service was great, with attentive staff and quick turnaround on food. Both times I went at an odd lunch hour. This should be on everyone's radar as their neighborhood Thai restaurant. read more

My husband and I had lunch at Lum Thai with my daughter and her fiancé. We shared a Heineken, Blanket Shrimp, Lum Thai Garlic with Chicken, and Pad See Ew with Beef. The Blanket Shrimp consisted of four shrimps, wrapped in thin rice paper, deep fried, and served with sweet and sour sauce. They were fresh from the fryer. There was enough pieces for everyone to have a piece. I liked how they were crispy and had no fillers. Between the two entrees, we liked the Lum Thai Garlic with Chicken more. The Lum Thai Garlic consisted of chicken stir fried with broccoli in a savory garlic sauce. The Pad See Ew with Chicken consisted of wide rice noodles stir fried with eggs and broccoli in a sweet black soy sauce. We felt like the dish had too much white pepper in it. read more

I went on a Sunday night and had a great experience. We ordered the chicken wings as an appetizer. For entrees, we ordered combo pad eggplant and drunken lo mein. Everything was flavorful and cooked well. I could tell the veggies were fresh. The eggplant was perfectly cooked (not mushy like other restaurants). The Thai tea was also tasty. I wish the serving of rice was a little bigger but perfect for what I could eat there. We definitely went home with leftovers. Their mango sticky rice was the most flavorful that I've had. The service was also wonderful and so friendly. The ambiance was very nice, nothing over the top and the music wasn't too loud. Since I've visited 3 more times since my first time,, I thought I'd do an update.. The Five Star rating remains the same.. if i could give them a six, I would just because i think they excel on every measure. Believe me, I don't give out 5's lightly.The staff are truly amazing: very friendly and helpful about choosing different menu items.. They even remember i don't want ice in my water.. The Curry Puff pastry is the best puff pastry I've had anywhere. Even though deep fried, you can see the individual layers in the pastry. It is not a lump of fried dough but true layers and layers of thin pastry almost like phyllo dough. Tried the longan juice which is very sweet but not cloying. The pad eggplant with seafood was delish and stuffed with seafood. It even made good leftovers when heated on low in the microwave. The tom kha with vegetables is now a staple for me. It also reheats well. Their Serving vessels are very stylish and really elevate the presentation. read more

This was our first time trying Lum Thai and we were sadly disappointed. Our food came in VERY small portions for the price we paid. Spring rolls were very dry and the dough in the curry puffs was still slightly raw. The rest of the food was fine. Not sure if we will be back again. read more

We were not trying to take advantage of your staff, which is why we called ahead to see if we could order and finish in time. There was no reason to hover over our party to sign the check immediately after the dishes were placed on our table. A common practice that is seen at other restaurants is that while no new tables are sat after your last call, the current patrons are still treated with respect while they are finishing. I am updating my review to what the rating should have been instead of trying to considerate for a new small business. We apologize for arriving close to your cut off time, and promise it will never happen again. Welcome to the neighborhood, I wish you luck in maintaining your business. Summary: Hurried and unwelcome. We received a promotional menu with a discount coupon in the mail and was excited to try out a new Thai restaurant near our house since Thai is one of our favorite cuisines. Service (1.5/5) : It states that they close at 9pm on Friday so our friend called around 8:20pm to see if our party of 6 could still be seated. They said we could stay until 9:30pm. Great! Or so we thought....they failed to state that your party would feel rushed and unwelcome the entire time, so you might as well go elsewhere if it's anywhere near their closing. As the last dish for our party was served, they immediately handed us the checks to sign and hounded us to sign it over and over again. She literally stopped our conversation in order to get us to sign the checks. Not sure why they did this as we wouldn't have been able to leave since our food was just served. This was at 9pm, what happened to the 9:30pm that was stated earlier? If you didn't want to serve us, you could have told us on the phone before all of us drove in. I get that we came in as they were closing but that's why we called to ask ahead of time. Food (3.5/5): Joyce got the beef pad see ew and I got the beef street noodles. The portions were decently sized, albeit smaller than the other Thai restaurants in the area. All our dishes came out with a spiralized carrot which looked fancy but was unnecessary. Her pad see ew tasted pretty standard. Her friend that got the same dish stated that it was more sweet than other places. My street noodles tasted kind of like a drunken noodle dish but spiced with sambal. I would give you more details about the food but I felt like I needed to scarf it down since the staff were breathing down our necks. Ambiance (3/5): Unremarkable with wooden chairs & tables, their LED sign is cool. Overall, we were looking forward to Lum Thai, but was highly disappointed by the lack of hospitality. I went there on opening night so I wasn't expecting perfection but was pleasantly surprised. It's nicely decorated with rich wood tones, soft lighting, music and a big screen tv on the wall. The service was friendly and the food arrived quickly. The food presentation was impressive and tasty. I got the Pad Thai and thought it was great! The prices are reasonable as well. The only con is it's a small eating area and the acoustics are very noisy when the restaurant gets busy. That aside, it's one of the best new restaurants in the Gaithersburg area. We have a few go-to Thai restaurants in our rotation and found Lum Thai totally by a chance Google search - had no idea it was there, even though it's closest to us. We did carry-out and the food was excellent - as good as any Thai we've had. Delightfully friendly restaurant staff when at pick-up. If I were going to be anything short of 100% positive, it would be to say that the crab rangoon, which I imagine are crisp when served on a plate in the restaurant, seemed to have steamed themselves soft and mushy in the carry-out container. Still tasty, just less than an ideal texture. We'll be back for sure. read more

Located in a strip mall with a Giant food. It was recently opened so I decided to try it. We were the only folks in the restaurant for lunch. Service was very polite. She bought our food and sat at a table with another employee. My food was like warm and not very tasty. First visit was a yummy one! Really liked the flavors and texture of the wide Drunken Noodles with chicken (medium spice) and the Pad Ka Prao with shrimp (also medium), but watch out for the green Thai chilis hiding among the green beans! They'll get ya! The Green Curry was quite nice, as well, but I'd like the eggplant a bit smaller and a little less al dente. Two pepper/medium spice was warm enough for hot-heads but not overbearing for more sensitive pallets. And there are always the three- and four-pepper levels for the adventurous! Take-out portions were good (meaning, enough for another round tomorrow), and prices were just right at $14-$16 an entree. Environment and staff were warm and welcoming. We are happy to have Lum Thai finally open and close to home--'cause we'll be going back, for sure! read more
