Had to find a really good comfort food spot since moving here and I am so glad I found Lulu's! I had ordered the fish and shrimp plate with fries and mac and cheese that is to DIE FOR! Everything was seasoned and fried just right. I also ordered a green apple lemonade that has the exact amount of sweetness you'd want when eating southern food. The staff was friendly and felt like a family reunion. I really enjoy the art on the walls and the chalk left out for you to sign your name on it too!
Generally, a restaurant is only as good as one's last meal, and that experience can make or break one's perception of a place. This was my third visit in 6 years and the first two made me return but not sure with this visit. To be clear, this restaurant serves "Maryland Style" cuisine, so don't expect Southern soul food. Their signature crab cakes are the star attraction--hands down one of the best I've ever had. Pricey, yes, but worth their weight in gold. My first two visits pre-pandemic were phenomenal, easily earning 5 stars each. The food was so satisfying I could barely make it out the door. On this most recent visit, however, left much to be desired and tested that "last meal" theory. The chicken wingettes were overfried and unseasoned, and the honey/Old Bay sauce tasted more like simple syrup with barely a hint of Old Bay. I ordered two fish platters--one fried, one grilled--and the portions were inconsistent: one had two pieces, the other three. Like, where's my missing fish? The grilled preparation was well-seasoned, which was a small saving grace, but the fried meal lacked seasoning and not even a lemon wedge to add some acid to cut through the fatty fried food. The collard greens were a major letdown, dominated by a sharp, heavy vinegar taste that overwhelmed any other flavor. They were nothing like the soulful Southern greens slow-cooked with a ham hock or smoked turkey leg for that rich, smoky depth. This Maryland-style preparation i wasn't ready for. The mac and cheese followed suit, lacking that creamy, cheesy, comforting soul but I did enjoyed it. The yellow rice was utterly forgettable, and the yams were respectable. Despite this recent miss, the crab cakes and my earlier 5-star visits keep this place in high regard. That last meal stung, but I'm not ready to write them off. Next time I'll stick to the crab cakes.
I had such high hopes for this place. I came into Charlotte from DC for a cheer competition. When in the south I always try to get some soul food. This was one of the first places that popped up and it was close to the convention center. I decided to give them a shot. I arrived and the parking lot was packed however it's extremely tiny. One guy was parked on the sidewalk. I thought to myself, this place must be a hit. WRONG! My wife placed the order which they surprisingly wrong. We ordered the Stuffed salmon platter, shrimp platter and fish platter. Shrimp and Fish were suppose to have zero rice but they both had rice anyway. Oh well. No biggie there. We also ordered cornbread. The food eventually was ready to go and I took my pictures in the establishment. Looked delicious. Nice presentation. I Couldn't wait to get back to our hotel to dig in. I personally ate the shrimp and fish platter. The shrimp was some of the most unseasoned shrimp I ever had. The yams were just plain sweet potatoes with zero cinnamon or sugar added. No no no. The Mac and cheese was good however. If the shrimp wasn't $20 I probably would have thrown it all away. The fish platter was similar. Super bland unseasoned fish however the Lulu's special sauce made a world of difference. I couldn't believe they didn't have tarter sauce. The greens were decent and once again the yams were not yamming at all. My wife ate the salmon. It had a few pieces of crab meat and she also liked the mash potato's. The cornbread while made that day is room temperature and not hot at all. They don't have a microwave or anyway to warm it up. The service was cool. That helped them get a star as the woman that prepared my food said she knew I'd be back. She couldn't have been more WRONG as the food here is NOT IT. If I ever come back this is a big NO for me. Nana's also in Charlotte is waaaaaayyyy better. I went there TWICE.
I've been coming here since this place opened when the owners used to work there on the daily to oversee things. I haven't seen them in a long time and it shows. I'm about to stop coming to this establishment. I spent $30 for some burnt up salmon and the cook had to know she burnt my fish and they gave it to me anyways. So disappointed
I had a great experience thanks to Rachel. She took really good care of me from start to finish and made sure everything was handled timely with care. She was patient, attentive, and went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and valued. It's rare to come across someone who genuinely cares about the people they're helping, and Rachel definitely deserves recognition for the outstanding service she provided. Thank you again for everything. & the food bang too
Was visiting for the weekend. Ended up trying the chicken wings, catfish, shrimp and Mac n cheese. All of the food was fresh, made to order and very good. Staff was friendly - no complaints and the prices were good with nice portions. Works recommend this place to anyone thinking about going
Not bad! Everything was seasoned well, hot and tasty. Service was as quick as possible, especially with so few people behind the counter. Except for the tight parking I don't have any complaints. Wouldn't say it's the BEST soul food in Charlotte but it will do in a pinch.
RANDOMLY found this place when my mom and I were in the mood for a place we've never been and to eat something we don't eat often. It's "hole in the wall" and tucked away but don't let the location steer you away. The food is so GOOD and the people working there are so nice. While we waiting on our food (we got it to-go because there are just a few stools in there) they kept checking on us. The crab cakes are literally ALL crab--definitely worth the price
OMG, I flew in today to pick up a kitten and fly him back to Iowa. I rented a car to kill 6 hours. I did a google search and found this spot. If you are more picky about your location than food keep moving. If you are like me and only care about food this place will blow you away. I think they should be a full service seafood joint charging 30% more. They killed it. I snagged a box of crab fries and they were so good. If you love good quality food don't miss out on this little gem.

We were back in town visiting family, and you know I had to come thru! Signage is bigger this time,it's nice to see progress with this gem. Now, let's get down to the food deets. Crab Fries-Still as delicious as the first time, we added 6 grilled shrimp that were perfectly cooked and tore up shop. 12 PC Wings-Honey Old Bay sauce and a perfectly hard fried wing that was juicy in the center. This sauce officially needs to be bottled and sold! Catfish-Fried and Grilled both delicious, especially when dipped in their special sauce. I could have used some fresh lemons for the grilled, but it was still flaky, flavorful, and fresh. Sides Seafood Mac-This is probably the only thing I wouldn't order again. It's not the flavor profile.. that is spot on, it just needs more seafood to be called a Seafood Mac and Cheese. Collard Greens-Slap your mamma worthy, Thanksgiving table worthy!! Yams-Texture was on point, sweetness was just right and I'm not mad that it touched my Mac and cheese on my plate. That bite was another level! Now, for the first time we got dessert, the sweet girl at the register suggested it when I asked if we missed anything, lol. Sweet potato cheesecake-Hot Danggggggg. I can't believe how freaking amazing this was! Delicious perfectly made sweet potato pie filling baked on top of a creamy cheesecake that was so creamy with the right amount of tart meets sweet. Yallll this dessert is what southern dreams are made of. Carrot cake-I am a huge carrot cake fan in general so this was a no-brainer for me. I was not READYYY!! Moist cake that was perfectly spiced, but what I loved the most is that you got bites of raisins and carrots that were so small yet made a huge impact in your mouth. Topped with buttercream frosting, definitely top 3 best I have had. Lulu's, you have my heart and loyalty when we are in town. All that goodness ran us $103.00 this go round, which is a fraction of what it's worth!!! See you next time!

I was craving seafood and ended up finding LuLu's Maryland Style Chicken -- and this spot did NOT disappoint. I ordered the catfish platter with collards and mac & cheese, served over rice and smothered in their Cajun sauce. Let me tell you... that sauce was. Everything came together perfectly. I also added a side of 6 shrimp, because why not? And they were just as good. Honestly, I have nothing negative to say about this place. The food was flavorful, filling, and worth it. They do have indoor seating, but it's a smaller space. A lot of people seem to grab it to-go and enjoy it at home with family -- which makes sense. Either way, dine-in or takeout, it works. If I'm back in Charlotte, I'm definitely pulling up again to try more items off their menu. read more

Legit legit legit food. I was craving seafood and this was one of the places that popped up on my search. I originally wanted a crab cake, because I love crab cakes but when I saw you could order jumbo lump crab at market price, I had to get it. The food here is made fresh to order. So be prepared to wait a little bit (I waited 20 minutes). The city is also doing some road construction here, so you may have to park on the street and walk to the restaurant. At this time, there is no dine-in available, so I ate in my car. I ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab & Shrimp platter with Greens and Garlic Mashed Potatoes. I also ordered the Honey Old Bay Wingettes because my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Then I ordered the Baltimore "Half and Half", not realizing what it was. I wanted half sweet tea/half unsweet tea, but it ended up being half sweet tea/half lemonade. Here are my thoughts. First, the drink was TOO sweet. It was unbearably sweet and tasted a little weird (I think it was the tea), so I threw it away. I even tried to dilute it with water, but that didn't help. The wingettes are buffalo wings, cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy, not soggy at all. Inside was a fully, not-overcooked, tender & juicy chicken meat. I know some northerners who swear by putting Old Bay on *EVERYTHING*. Now, I always associated Old Bay with seafood and seafood boils, so it didn't dawn on me you can use it like seasoned salt. It was unique but I did like the combination of Old Bay and honey. It wasn't overly sweet at all. Now for my platter. Gosh darn this was DELICIOUS. The lump crab was chock FULL of crab meat. I was expecting filler to be tossed in, but you're paying market price so it's only fitting I get a huge scoop of seasoned crab meat. If you love crab meat, you must try this. I ordered the shrimp grilled (which they forgot) but it was cooked where there were crispy edges on it. The greens were also good, slightly sweet but I prefer greens with a sourer profile. I wish they gave you pepper vinegar to go. Finally, the garlic mashed potatoes were buttery, smooth, and very garlicky. There's no such thing as too much garlic unless you're a vampire. Overall, I liked LuLu's but it can get VERY expensive. The meal I described cost me on the upper end of $50. I think that's very steep for what I got, but it was good, nevertheless. read more

I was in town visiting and found this place through a combination of IG bloggers and Yelp searches i went on Black Friday. I really enjoyed my chicken and fries. It was fresh and flavorful! I shared some and everyone wanted to go back but we were 20 mins away with a packed schedule. Everyone was nice, welcoming, and patient with me since i wasn't quite sure about what to get. The only reason, I took off 1 star is because there were whole wings advertised but they said they didn't sale those any more. Also, it took us a at least 20 minutes to get to the parking lot due to construction. GPS was no help. My mom almost gave up because I had been calling for directions(since I'm from out of town) and we weren't sure if they were open even tho IG said they were. Other than that, when I'm back in town I'll def pull up again and I told my family that's there to check them out. read more

I love the food here!! Tastes like their cooking for family and not the public. Love and pride in every bite!! Exactly what I expect in the south. Food was very fresh... had to crab and shrimp combo with greens that were sweet and tender along with a Seafood Mac & Cheese that was loaded with crab and shrimp! Between the upgrade on the Mac & Cheese and the side of fries... this was a pricey meal at $40 but considering it was so fresh.. it was worth the money! Only thing holding them back from it being 5 stars is the place is mostly take out. The outdoor patio is in rough shape and could use a little love. But if your taking it to go... YOU'RE IN FOR A TREAT!! read more
Had been hearing great things about Lulu's so I finally tried it. I wanted to see if the crab cake was anything like the famous restaurant in Baltimore and how much filler was in it. I was pleased. Crab cake was very good and satisfied my tastebuds. I also got fried shrimp and mashed potatoes. Potatoes were good and shrimp was flavorful but a little salty. Visit was at the height of COVID and boy was it busy I went on a Saturday afternoon but since I had ordered ahead I didn't have to wait too long. Parking is a problem but fortunately I was a passenger. There's other dishes I want to try so I plan to return. read more
I've been here a few times and every time the food has been amazing. I usually order the salmon with a crab topping. It's busy regularly but their pick up process efficient and swift. Food is made to order so you'll have to have a little patience on a Friday or Saturday night (no biggie though, it's worth it). There's a small parking area but it's better to just park on the street or in the lot across the street. They're also a part of Eat Blk Clt week and I couldn't be more excited for them!! My friends & I really enjoyed Lulus. Customer services was great and food took about 15 minutes to come out. The whiting was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Both mac & cheese and greens were good! The shrimp was also very delish! Will be back to try the crab fries and crab cakes! read more

I saw this place last time I was in NC, but was almost an hour away and didn't bother. Well I'm in Charlotte at the moment and came across on Yelp and remember location. Keep in mind this is not a sit down restaurant and you can place your order there or call in. I decided to try the and MD crab cake platter, based on a recommendation from another patron. She informed me that it comes from Maryland etc. It actually seem like it was a popular option, because I heard lady tell cashier she had two left. I got the platter with two sides seafood Mac an cheese and cabbage. The service is very quick. I enjoyed my lunch from here and definitely will be back whenever I'm in the area. read more

about 6issh on a Friday evening I got the salmon and shrimp platter with Cajun cause. Sides Mac and cheese and yams. Everything else was good except the Mac & cheese. The rue(cheese sauce) had a really burnt bottom of the pot taste. I tried to mask it eating it with my yams but the taste was too strong. I tried hot sauce and nothing would work so I paid $30 for salmon, shrimp and one side. It's just too expensive for a whole thing of Mac to taste like that especially when that's the side ppl look forward to read more
I noticed this was one of the top rated spots in the city, perfect for a couple like us where one of us loves seafood, and the other loves chicken. Currently offering takeout, you order at the counter and they ask the make and model of your car and they bring it out to you when it's ready. I got the crab cake at market price ($26) with corn bread and mac and cheese, my husband got the chicken wings with fries and mac n cheese. Both plates also came with a bed of rice. Everything was amazing! The crab cake was a good size, tasted very fresh and not too fishy. Chicken was moist and crispy and seasoned well. The mac n cheese was delicious! Towards the end of the night and still soft and cheesy and didn't taste old. Fries are your basic fries. The cornbread was a STAR. Big slice and was like a thick moist cake of cornbread. I would've bought a whole pan if I could! I give it 4 stars only because the staff wasn't very friendly when I visited. They seemed kind of annoyed by our presence and we didn't feel welcome. I love that this is a black owned business and that it's a popular spot in the area, the people definitely were waiting in line outside to place a order. I probably waited in line for 10mins or so and my food was ready in 20min. I recommend calling in or ordering online. I ordered the lump crab and shrimp platter with yams and Mac n cheese w/a side of honey bbq wings. The Mac n cheese was decent, no real complaints. It was cheesy but could've used just a little seasoning. The yams were ok, nothing to write too much about... edible. The shrimp I couldn't stomach. The grease it was fried in was clearly burnt and I tasted it in the shrimp batter. The wings had the same issue, overused grease. So I ate two wings and two shrimp. The crab lump and rice was delicious. Not complaints about that. Overall, I know this spot has potential, it says so in their reviews and to-go line out the door. I've never been a huge fan of crab cakes. I don't dislike them, I was just never that impressed by them. Since I had heard this place had the best crab cakes, I decided to give it a shot. Covid-19: you can order and pay over the phone which I appreciated. You have to go in to get your takeout, no curbside (not a huge deal). They are takeout only right now and there were quite a few people in line waiting to order. While I was inside, I found no employees wearing masks correctly. They were either around their chin, not covering their nose, or not wearing one at all. This really turned me off. I had to wait a couple of minutes for my food which wasn't a big deal at all, but they gave me cornbread for it which was really nice. We got a crab cake platter with mac and cheese and yams as well as crab fries. I was expecting to like the crab fries more, but to my surprise, I liked the crab cake more. It was better than any other crab cake I've had. It had so much crab and great flavor. The crab fries were also very good. I thought the fries would be ok on the 15 minute ride home, but they got soggy. I would eat them ASAP. We loved both of the sides. The yams were spiced with cinnamon and weren't overly sweet which I enjoyed. They have great food and great customer service. I wish they wore masks correctly though. Popped down to Charlotte for the weekend and some friends in the city told me that LuLu's was the place to go. Due to Covid the restaurant was offering only takeout. Had a great time chatting with other people in line about the city and finding things to do. The staff were super friendly and greeted everyone with a smile. I'm a talker so of course engaged with some banter. With the help of the staff we went with a few platters that were very good. Fried shrimp and salmon platter. My sister picked up togo from LuLu's for us all to try. We tried to order a variety of items so we could sample all they have to offer. We ordered Chicken wings with red velvet waffle (syrup/frosting on side), Crab cake and shrimp platter with Mac and cheese and yams, Crab cake platter with mash potatoes and mac and cheese and the Stuffed Salmon Platter with Mac and cheese and yams. The portions were huge. You really get what you pay for. The side items were good. The yams were sweet but not too sweet. The Mac and Cheese was a good consistency with a good amount of cheese. The star of the show is their seafood. The crab cakes are a good size with loads of meat. They could be cooked a little longer for my liking but overall I was impressed. The salmon was seasoned well and was complimented very well by the crab meat. The fried shrimp were my favorite with the chicken and waffles coming in second. My husband is from Baltimore, we lived in Maryland prior to coming to Charlotte and ate some of the best crabs and crab cakes every week!! Babbbbbbbbbby we have been missing out we got honey bbq old bay wings, two orders of crab fries (one was enough) and a crab cake. Someone told me about LuLu's so I said let me check it out, it looks official! These are real crabs cakes. Now I ordered to go and they forgot to put a fork in the bag. I was staying downtown and lord I was eating with my dang fingers! We will return. I called in and picked up and it was ready in 10 minutes for sure! I'm a little torn about my review with LuLu's. I have stopped twice prior but I can't seem to get my head straight on when they're open and closed. So finally yesterday. It was my day. My love for soul food started at a young age. So when there's new one in town. I'm more than eager to try out.. But things took a couple misstep yesterday. I ordered 2 crab cakes platters and a fried catfish platter including 2 cornbread. The crab cake (only ONE) platter costed $25.60. Cat Fish was fine since it was $13 The missteps: when I ordered cornbread. Someone from the back came out to the front and said real loud.. Our cornbreads are burnt. So front staff asked me if I still wanted cornbread. I doubt I wanted burnt cornbread. And this item have alway been my favorite. I sat in the car and a staff came out to infront me that since their greens were sooo popular. They ran out. Well ok. Guess I won't be having greens either. Crab cakes: it was good but I can't justify the $26.50 for only ONE cake. Fried catfish was very bland. I didn't like using condiments. Rather taste the food from how the chef originally made it. And rice was beyond dry. The cabbages was good, sweet yams were to died for. Mac and cheese was also no doubt good. It's a busy and popular joint. I would love to try something else on the menu since I love their yams and Mac. Just hope they have their cornbread next time. Front staffs were more than gracious. read more
