Luigi's Italian Restaurant

Food 10/10 Ambiance 10/10…read moreStaff 10/10 My husband and I have been on the search for authentic Italian food and boy did we find the spot. This restaurant is owned by a man from Italy. Their pasta is fresh and handmade, it has the perfect bite to it. Exactly what authentic pasta should be like. The coolest thing is that you can get a half portion of most pastas. For someone that can only eat smaller portions it is so nice to have that option. The place is clean and feels like you walked into an authentic Italian restaurant. It doesn't feel like cheesy Olive Garden ha! Walk don't run if you are looking for authentic Italian food!

First off a very nice restaurant and ambiance was pleasant and very clean. Our server was very nice I think her name was Nina, so thank you for a job well done. Now onto the food and once again it's not what my family does so it was difficult to judge them too harshly. They lose a star for telling me they were out of something 10 minutes after I order. My replacement meal was ok and I feel it lacked the flavor I'm used to. My dining guest also felt their meals lacked flavor. Although everything was cooked right and portion size was sufficient for the price, it lacked the overall feel of a 4 star place. I might be back but it's only if I'm in town.

Strada by Luciano's - a small trailer outfitted with a couple of burners - is not easily found, especially on account of their willingness to venture into the city's southwest side and frequent stops in other cities in the region, like Winfield. They're committed to hitting the road from Monday through Friday for lunch; their whereabouts can be determined from their Facebook page. It was a smart decision to take the show on the road, and even smarter to offer an extremely limited menu to ensure the quality stays high. You can choose from two pasta dishes and a salad. Both pastas are repeats from the restaurant, though they're prepared differently and to varying results. The penne in meat sauce shares the exact same sugo di carne from the mothership, and the pasta finished à la minute gives you a rich sauce and an al dente pasta that is plenty worthy of the Luciano's name. The cheesy bowtie pasta, an imitation of the quattro formaggi, was less successfully composed due to the cream-to-cheese ratio on a recent visit being disappointingly skewed toward the former. The bowtie pasta was still cooked very well, so they are consistent in that regard. You would be burying the lede if you skipped over the salad. It ends up being the most unique aspect of the truck thanks to the ample cone of crisp Parmesan that surrounds the dressed greens. There are nits to be picked here, too, mostly because you end up with too much cheese for the small salad. Ordered alongside one of the pasta dishes, however, makes it easy to find a use for the excess remainder.

The service is friendly and prompt. They had a nice selection of pastas to choose from and even a vegan option. My choice today was a half and half combo: half salad, half pasta. I chose the Mediterranean salad and mottola pasta combo. The salad was great. Light vinaigrette dressing, lots of toppings. However you don't get the parmeasean cup or anything crunchy on top. I missed that aspect. The pasta was the big miss for me. The pasta is cooked well, but the sauce had no flavor and was pretty greasy. Most of all, why was there no bread? Who eats pasta with no bread? I also ordered tiramisu, which came in a lovely little cup. It tasted amazing, but I would have liked another layer of ladyfingers in there. It was pretty heavy towards the creamy side. Totals $16 with tip. Not totally sure it was worth it, but I'd try a different pasta option next time, just to give it another go.

Shindigs Bar & Grill

(185 reviews)

I have to first say, I love Shindigs. Winfield is blessed to have them. The food is great, and the…read morestaff is very personable, and they cater to requests that are slightly off menu very well, and thank you for that. Now, why am I dropping from five to four stars? The staff leadership. Where is it? Where is an experienced leader to help ensure the customers' needs are met? What I see is a very young (and very sweet) staff operating largely unsupervised. Tonight, for example. My wife and I got dressed for dinner, and showed up sans reservation. All good. I made my way to the bar to get drinks for my wife and me, while my wife checked us in. We were seated in a booth fairly quickly upstairs. Our server took good care of us, despite how busy it was. So far so good. My wife ordered a yummy sandwich, and I ordered the Yard Bird, essentially a grilled chicken breast. I ordered asparagus and a side salad to go along with it. We sat there for a bit, but things were busy, and all was good. We were having a great time. Here's where they could do better, and it feels very typical as we're eating there - a lot. After sitting for a while our food came, but here's the deal. The salad wasn't delivered early, as is customary. It came with my entrée. By the time I enjoyed my salad, and the vinaigrette was outstanding, the chicken and asparagus was cold. I just boxed it up and took it home. Really? How hard is this, folks? Your food is priced at big boy prices, but the overall service is not up to the prices you charge. Here are a few more examples. These are simple things that can be fixed, if anyone bothers to: Since I moved here over a year ago, I've developed a liking for their onion rings. We frequently order them as an appetizer. In that year, guess how many times when the appetizer is delivered to the table (usually by a member of the kitchen staff and not by our server) that we have plates for each person to use? Zero. Not once in the last year. All we can do is try to catch the kitchen staff member before they walk away and ask for plates. Then we wait as our appetizer cools off for the plates. Who's guiding these kids? Next, order iced tea. You'll get your tea, but many, many times with such a minimum of ice that you have to ask the server for more ice before you're even a third through. On the tea thing, if you order iced tea with lemon, in my experience you'll get the lemon you ordered only about half the time, and you have to follow up. Additionally, when you're done with your first glass of tea and you're due for a refill, it would be outstanding if, when a refill is placed in front of you, it had lemon as well. It's so simple, right? Back to tonight's dinner. We had dinner in a booth upstairs, but we decided to move downstairs for coffee and dessert at the bar. But wait, the coffee machine is broken, so no coffee. We left, and went to another restaurant for dessert. I love the people at Shindigs, and it pains me to give this feedback. I'm a foodie, and I appreciate good service and tip accordingly. I'm not one with restaurant experience, other than from a customer perspective. It just seems to me that someone should be teaching basic expectations to the staff, then hold them accountable for providing it. I assume the teaching has taken place, I just don't see the accountability by a leader following up.

While it may be standard fare, the food had flavor and a wonderful taste! The chicken was not greasy, but evenly coated with the sauce and the smaller pieces mean they were slightly crunchy and perfect to mix with your rice. It also had a wonderful taste...sweet, sticky, with just the slightest hint of heat. The rice was spot on, cooked well, and the egg roll was fried and perfectly sized for a meal. Our side orders were delicious. I'm picky when it comes to crab rangoon and these were perfect! I asked if they were up for maybe having the appetizer potato skins topped with the appetizer (fried) cheese curds. They said "sure."
