Best donuts in Kingsport. Don't believe me? Go try them for yourself. You won't be disappointed…read more Since I'm a TN newbie, I didn't know if this would truly be great donuts. Well, I'm here to tell you that these little gems melt in your mouth and make you feel like a kid again. My friend told Anna that this was my first visit. Anna said we ordered all her favorites, but there was one more I just HAD to try. So she handed me a donut hot off the line. I practically inhaled it because it was so delicious. Maple Mocha Espresso iced yeast donut is scrumptious. Can't wait to return and try their Maple Bacon yeast donut. We asked why it's drive through only. Anna said it's because she's the only one working there and can't be in front and at the window for all the customers. Hmm, sounds like a job opportunity if anyone is interested. Nice menu at the drive through with photos and descriptions of their donuts and coffee. Love the cute box for small orders.

The donut was sickly sweet and not at all what I had hoped for. There should be a big sign somewhere stating only drive thru service, instead after exiting my car on this cold windy morning I discovered that they only have drive thru service. So back into my car to get my disappointing donut. I ordered one donut and they screwed up that and it took way too much time as the man doing whatever waiting for a lady to come and take my money. HORRIBLE!

I have to say, I really do love their cookies. They look similar to Crumbl's, but they're not…read morenearly as crazy sweet, which I like. My only complaints are the prices and the availability. At $4.50 a cookie (and some flavors are an extra $2), they're pretty expensive for this area. They also say they change flavors every Friday, but when I checked for three weeks, most of the flavors stayed the same. The biggest issue is that they keep "selling out" so early. One time I went around noon, and they were already out of 3 or 4 flavors. Another customer had driven over an hour for a certain cookie and was disappointed it was gone. I went back another day around 3 p.m., and they were sold out of about half the menu again. If you're charging premium prices, you really shouldn't be out of so many flavors that early. Crumbl seems to keep all their flavors available all day, so I wish they could do the same. (I looked last night to order for today and even on their website about half of the cookies are already sold out... What's the deal with that)

If I were Mike Teavee, I would not be leaving the place as large as I entered it. Y'know what I'm sayin'? You order and pay on the side of the store with an iPad. Very self-service. And while I'm not against self-service, it feels very disconnected from the people there and just sort of...cold? Even convoluted? Perhaps a mite pretentious when combined with the stuffy bright-white atmosphere? Compare to Great Clips, which combines personable service with smart tech solutions. Compare with Great American Cookie which is just so much more straightforward overall. GAC's customer service model is great for customers of all kinds. Here at Crave, I don't want to walk up to someone and have them point me to a tablet in the corner away from the entrance. Simplify! Everyone there was just doing their job, and I hold nothing against the fine people running the establishment. But the people working there deserve a better place with more satisfying food. The people eating from there deserve better for the prices.

To speak intelligently about this experience, I need to invoke another time, another place. Despite…read moremy desire for it to be otherwise, my mind drifts back to my days in Vietnam. At that time, meals were not something we could take for granted, flavor was not a luxury, and the MRE's were simply a way of keeping ourselves going, a necessary evil in the face of capital E Evil. I don't remember a single meal I ate in those days, and I'm glad for that. Well, this experience was kind of like that. It was a hard day for many reasons - hot and humid amid the barren landscape of any available breakfast in all of Burnsville. Sad, but an understandable result of our times. Imagine it - ordering a breakfast sandwich but no prices for any of the ingredients listed: will this sandwich be 9$ or $20? I can't know until it's time to pay, and by then it's too late (if I want to remain a gentleman). And imagine further - a 20 minute wait in the upstairs so quiet, so empty, that even casual conversation with my comrade echoed off the walls for all to hear. My belly rumbling could even have been confused with flatulence, for which I am apologetic. Picture the sandwich coming, my great relief, and the resulting disappointment to find that not a single piece of bacon awaited me. Bacon that I not only wanted, but needed. Stay with me - I took the sandwich downstairs, hoping for a quick remedy, but alas, it was not to be. Another 20 minutes elapsed, and my compatriot finished his breakfast burrito which near broke his wallet (he does have a decadent streak). I walked downstairs, confused and distraught. The sandwich had been waiting all along, but I was not made aware. I took it upstairs and as a matter of principle, peeled back the bread to see two pale, thin, soggy pieces of bacon, as if they had simply pulled apart a microwave Jimmy Dean microwave breakfast sandwich and applied that wan and insulting offering to my "food." I ate the sandwich, but I didn't enjoy it. I didn't enjoy even a single bite. And yet I knew that there was a whole day to live, and a trying journey to Ingles yet to come. I adjusted my attitude as I made some cursory field notes, which you are now reading, and resolved myself to, in the words of my friend and yours Charlie Kirk, carry the flame even as my digestive fire was dampened and abused. This review is part of my process that I learned in harder times, because I saw in my father (and cousin Tommy) what repressing emotions can do. Thank you for reading, thank you for caring.
