When I first learned of Pena Palace, I thought it looked gaudy, but in person it is quite jaw dropping. You can see quite a bit of the grounds just by purchasing a pena park ticket, but that ticket doesn't give you access to the interior of the palace. We took the train to Sintra and walked the steep, windy streets up after taking a local bus. Definitely would take the $12/pp tourist bus or hire a tuktuk in retrospect, but on the bright side, I got a good workout. Worth the day trip from Lisbon.

It gets really busy here pretty early on so make sure you arrive as the lines to enter and visit the castle can get long quickly. It's best to choose the earliest slot possible as it gets busier by the day. It's also a castle, so you should expect narrow walkways and corridors. Once inside, you can tour the magnificent rooms, see the historical art and furniture and get a great view of the magnificent vistas overlooking the mountain area. It can get kind of windy up here in some areas so just keep that in mind. But the views are majestic and the sense of history is tremendous. But again, this place gets very crowded quickly and it is a bit of a trek to get up here, either by bus or walking though I saw several people who opted to walk up to the castle from the city below clearly regretting their decision when we passed them by ... so just keep that in mind as well.

This restaurant seemed to be locals hangout as most of the older gentlemen were gathered around the tv to watch the Sporting Lisbon football game. There's an outdoor patio and indoor dining. I regret not going inside as the patrons outside were smoking non-stop. There are patio heaters to keep you warm. As for the food we ordered a couple of staples. Bife da vazia a marrare "Beefsteak sauce" was my choice and my wife got the paella negra which is black in colour using squid ink. Both dishes took some time to come out but they were hot and fresh. The steak was thick and juicy. The gravy was different because they use mustard along with the traditional Portuguese brown sauce. It really hit the spot. The steakhouse fries were crispy and soaked up the gravy nicely. The paella negra was made just right. Not too dry and not too saucy. I would have wished for more seafood but the dish was executed perfectly. Compliments to the chef! Overall, we enjoyed the meal and the price point is reasonable considering it's like one block off of the main strip. I recommend this restaurant based on my experience. The service was a bit slow but the quality of the food made up for it.

When we arrived, they were just doing counter service and closing for the afternoon, but we were able to get a panini and we found local craft beer (which was pretty neat) and they let us eat on their patio. I had the Iberian sandwich which has Iberian prosciutto, flamengo cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickled red onion. It was the perfect sandwich to cure my hangry. When we went for lunch the day before we did not know that this café was also the breakfast part of our bed and breakfast. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast the next street over and both mornings a continental breakfast at this café was included. This is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had as part of the bed-and-breakfast. We were each served a portion of fresh fruit (which changed by the day), a boiled egg, a couple slices of ham and cheese, a pastel de nata, a basket of crossiants and rolls to share, and whatever you would like to drink. I had fresh squeezed orange juice, and a latte both days. Thankfully, like most places in Portugal they offer dairy alternatives. I honestly still dream about this breakfast. The wait staff on all of our trips were so friendly and helpful. It is really a beautiful set up and they have many things that you can purchase as well. I personally purchased a bowl shaped like a strawberry that I now have in my kitchen. This is definitely a stop. You need to make while in Sintra!

Me and my wife we both got a regular cafe Americano which was good, no ice coffee here just FYI. We also got their signature toast sandwiches. I got the full size chicken tomato and mayo toast. The full sandwich itself is big pretty much 4 slices of beard cut into 2 pieces each. There was barely any chicken in this sandwich all I tasted was mayo and literally just some pulled chicken pieces. I would not recommend this sandwich unless you like mayo with toasted bread. My wife got the prosciutto and cheese sandwich which was much better just a single slice of prosciutto and some cheese. The girl behind the counter was ok didn't seem like she wanted to be at work today but was ok overall I guess. For 2 people I paid about 12€ which included 2 full size toasts and 2 coffees, definitely not a bad deal if you ask me. Would I come back here again? Maybe just for coffee and something else to try but that's about it. They also have some seating outside and some tables inside.
