Happy garden sounds like just another run-of-the-mill Cheap Chinese place. There are no shortage…read moreof these places because they serve a massive clientele of hungry locals. My family has a curse with these Chinese-American takeout places. We have a great experience the first few times and then the food starts arriving of a much lesser caliber. That being said, Happy Garden is my current place for a healthy, fresh Chinese American Combo Meal. They use fresh, clean vegetables and clean meat. I would prefer to have the tiniest amount of high quality meat in my food, more like a seasoning, atop a bed of varied greens. These guys do a good job of keeping the vegetables good without the big compromise: it's either loaded with piles of low grade meat in cornstarch, with a few veg for garnish, OR its so nutritious and delicious that they move to Williamsburg and I never hear another word.. Surprisingly clean beef in my veg. I am excited to try more things! But once my spouse ordered green beans without meat, but didn't know how to get the usual sauce. So he just ordered it regular instead of "beef with stringbeans, no beef"...and they served it in garlic sauce. Lots of places do this if you order it without meat; a real Chinese string bean might be topped with ground pork in the seasonings even if you asked for the non-meat version, because that is the traditional way to order it. Should you find yourself in the strange new world of people craving Chinese American Fast Food from whichever era you spawned, then I recommend trying as many local Chinese American places as you can. This one has the sauce-veg-meat ratio we are looking for, and the kinds of combination platters that can feed the whole darn bunch.

It was kind of giving Hong Kong fast food/cafeteria type of vibes. It wasn't too busy when I went on a weekend for lunch. I love that you get a complimentary side dish with the order, and I went for cucumber salad, but it was served chilled. The salad contained wood ear mushrooms, which are known to release toxins if kept overnight, so I hope it was made the day of and not old! I really liked the udon beef stir fry. It was pretty big for just $13.95, and the udon had a good texture (not too mushy) while the beef tasted fresh. For the sauerkraut fish, you can choose between small and large. I got the small but felt that it was still a lot, so the portions are really generous. You can also choose between three different types of fish: basa, snakehead, and grass carp. The staff said snakehead is the most popular so we just went with that. It was filet (aka deboned) and tender when it arrived. But I think I'm not a big fan of the sauerkraut flavor. Also, it was crazy mala even with just one pepper sign. I'd go back to try the tomato sauerkraut version. I actually liked another fish dish more: garlic grilled fish. It also had a bit of broth that was very tasty. I would get this one again. Ended the meal with complimentary grass jelly!

We knew the large would be big, but it was still more food than we expected once it came to the table. Definitely not something I'd order alone. The broth was sour first, then the spice started building in an amazing way after a few bites. It wasn't painfully spicy or anything, but there was enough chili oil to make us slow down a little. The basa was very soft and picked up a lot of the broth, which I liked. Some pieces had been sitting near the bottom longer and tasted even better. The restaurant is pretty casual. Our food came out quickly. I'd order the same flavor again, but next time I'd either bring more people or get a smaller portion because the large was honestly a lot for two.
