If you're interested in traditional Louisiana comfort food, this place is definitely worth checking out!!! But let me tell you about my experience because there are some PROS and CONS!!! First, a little bit of HISTORY!!! Mother's Restaurant opened in 1938 and became famous for its traditional New Orleans dishes, especially its baked ham, po'boys, and Southern comfort food!!! It's located within walking distance of several popular attractions like Caesars casino, brand name hotels, convention center and etc!!! The restaurant has that old-fashioned, casual atmosphere that reminds you of a neighborhood diner from decades ago!!! Now let's talk about FOOD!!! I ordered their regular JAMBALAYA, one of Louisiana's most famous traditional dishes!!! If you're unfamiliar with jambalaya, it's a flavorful rice dish influenced by Louisiana's Cajun and Creole cooking traditions, usually prepared with meat, sausage, vegetables, and seasonings!!! Think of it as Louisiana's version of a delicious mixed rice dish!!! Haha!!! And YESSSS!!! It was DELICIOUS!!! Rich, flavorful, nicely seasoned, and exactly the kind of comfort food I wanted to try while exploring NOLA!!! It came with slices of French bread on the side, which was a nice addition!!! Nothing fancy about the presentation, just a simple bowl of traditional Louisiana food!!! Sometimes that's exactly what makes a meal enjoyable!!! And the PRICE?! Pretty reasonable!!! My regular jambalaya was $10.50, and the total came to $11.70 after taxes!!! Considering the restaurant's popularity and its downtown location, I thought that was a good deal!!! Now, about the CROWD!!! OMG!!! This restaurant is BUSYYYY!!! I actually stopped by the previous day, but the line was SO LONG that I decided to skip it!!! Haha!!! I wasn't about to spend half my day waiting in line!!! So I returned the following day, and although the restaurant was still crowded, the situation was much more manageable!!! One important thing to know is that the seating is FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED!!! So don't expect a fancy restaurant with a hostess escorting you to your reserved table!!! You need to find an available spot, and when the restaurant gets busy, that can be a little challenging!!! Now let's talk about the INTERIOR!!! Mother's has been around since 1938, and you can definitely feel its age!!! The furniture and overall design are quite old and outdated!!! I appreciate historic restaurants and their original character, but I personally think this place could benefit from some updating!!! There is a difference between historical charm and a restaurant that simply needs a little refreshing!!! And CLEANLINESS!!! This was another area that could use improvement!!! The dining area didn't look particularly clean or well-maintained during my visit, which was disappointing!!! I understand that the restaurant gets extremely busy, but cleanliness should always be a priority, regardless of how popular or historic a place is!!! BUT here's the thing!!! Despite the crowds, outdated furniture, and less-than-impressive dining area, I genuinely enjoyed my jambalaya!!! The food was YUMMY, the portion was satisfying, and the price was reasonable!!! Sometimes a restaurant doesn't need a luxurious interior to serve delicious food, although a cleaner and more comfortable environment would certainly make the experience better!!! Overall, Mother's Restaurant is an interesting piece of NOLA's culinary history!!! It's not fancy, it's not modern, and it's definitely not the cleanest restaurant I've visited, BUT it serves tasty traditional Louisiana food at affordable prices!!! My suggestion?! Avoid peak dining hours if possible, be prepared for a potential wait, and don't expect an upscale dining experience!!! Come for the FOOD and the HISTORY, not the decor!!! Haha!!! Would I recommend it?! YES, especially if you want to experience a longtime New Orleans institution and try some traditional Louisiana comfort food without spending a fortune!!! Voilà!!! And there was a line of about 15 people waiting for the cash register to order. And that line took a painfully long time to move at all and was very slow. I'm not sure what the reason was either incompetence or lethargy. The six of us ordered our dinners and went to the room next-door to sit at a big table and wait for the food. I got a Cajun sampler and my wife got a bowl of seafood gumbo and a shrimp Poboy. Every single dish on my plate, except for the turnip greens was lukewarm or room temperature at best. My wife's Poboy was cold and the seafood gumbo was room temperature. None of our dining companions commented on the food or the flavor or anything so I assumed all of their food was cold as well and we pretty much ate in silence. It was so incredibly disappointing. My mom and I usually split a salad from the salad bar, which offers three different types of lettuce/spinach and a huge selection of toppings and dressings. We also indulge in an order of french fries or onion rings from the grill from time to time. The grill serves a wide variety of items, from poboys, burgers and hot sausage to chicken and fish. I've tried a few items from the deli as well, including the tuna salad and shrimp remoulade, and both were delicious. The stew contains treasures such as tender shrimp, smoked sausage, and sweet bits of blue crab, a chunk of chicken, and file powder. The star is the Creole chaurice sausage with a complex flavor and a little spiciness. Add some tangy Louisiana hot sauce. Barbecued Shrimp: The shrimp isn't grilled and it doesn't have any barbecue sauce. The shrimp are sautéed in a rich velvety sauce of butter, garlic, lemon, and black pepper. Your tastebuds will get a wake up call from the Creole seasonings and Worcestershire. Take the crusty French bread and dunk it in the savory and flavorful sauce. Crawfish étouffée: The little crawfish tails are smothered in a gravy based on a blond roux, seafood stock, and the holy trinity of onions, bell pepper, celery. The cayenne, paprika, celery salt, thyme, and garlic adds a nice layering of seasonings. The delicious sauce is served with steamed rice. Shrimp Clemenceau: This Creole dish is shrimp sautéed in garlic and butter. Then it's mixed with green peas, mushrooms, and diced potatoes. The potatoes are crispy and soft. For breakfast, we got the breakfast biscuit which came with eggs, bacon and cheese, and sided it with grits. The breakfast sandwich was solid, eggs were a bit soft and grits were more mealy than we are used to, but I think that may be authenticity of the area more than anything. I opted for the three option omelet with onion, sausage and gouda plus a side of sausage links. The omelet, though odd sounding combination turned out to be solid. Maybe it was my options, but it was decently "one note" in flavor. I tossed a little hot sauce on and that helped. However, while the sausage links were not much to look at, they were tasty, with a nice snap to the casing and meaty inside. To go with our breakfast, I got a cold brew with a splash of almond milk while my partner embraced NOLA and started his day with a bourbon sour. Both of us enjoyed our choices!
