At age 77, facing this emotional event, insurance uncertainty, and the daunting prospect of rebuilding was overwhelming -- especially since we'd never planned to build a home. After exploring options, we chose to rebuild and were fortunate to work with John Stevens and Sopris Development. Sopris provided truly full-service support: lot remediation, design, permitting, vendor introductions, and construction. It is hard to imagine receiving better service from any other company! Concept and Design: We worked closely with John and his architect, describing what we liked about our former home and our future needs. The vendors were professional, offered great selections, and coordinated seamlessly (e.g., cabinet makers accounted for appliance sizes). Weekly on-site meetings kept us informed and allowed thoughtful adjustments (e.g., adding stair lights, extra outlets, etc.). Many of our neighbors were told 15-24 months to completion by other builders; Sopris estimated 12 months and completed our home in 13. Actually, we got a…read morebroken contract and 2 weeks of wasted time looking for a contractor who could handle building a barn kit in the mountains. Christy was actually good to work with and presented us with an acceptable signed (by her) contract that we accepted in return. Then she showed up with her partner (?) for what we thought was a quick look at our property an to pick up our deposit. That's when the whole thing became untenable. Her partner (?) began by saying the contract was simply an estimate that could be cancelled at any time. He could say it a hundred times but that doesn't make it true. It is very much a signed contract that uses the word contract within it more than 35 times. He also announced many times that they weren't making any money off this job; that makes no difference to us as that's a problem within their company and it's cost estimating process. We just wanted a barn kit built with the least effect on our pocketbook. He also was very aggressive and would interrupt us when we would attempt to put forth a solution to one of his supposed problems, ie. too expensive and/or difficult to get equipment up here in the mountains. Our answer was to offer the use of our skid steer (frankly we didn't really want a stranger using our expensive machinery but we were attempting to mitigate his "problems"). In response to this supposed "difficulty of getting here" we cited the moving vans and equipment delivery we had recently employed. Also cited was the cost of a porta potty from town. First I offered our RV toilet then, in an email the following day I forwarded information from a local company that would charge only $250 for the time of the entire project. (Obviously I didn't want a bunch of workers using my rv toilet but again, we were attempting to solve a problem.) He was so rude that I finally had to tell him to stop interrupting me. Unfortunately, when I'm furious I get teary and that gave him the excuse that he needed after wasting our time for two more days before saying I was "too emotional" and they weren't going to continue. I even flat out asked him when he was here if they were pulling out of the job and he couldn't even be honest enough to say "yes" at that time. Two wasted days later he cited my email as, again, "emotional" although it was simply a reiteration of the solutions we had offered and the positive experience we had had previously of a mountain house build and that it was neccessary to think outside the box when working in the mountains. Frankly, I'm not sure they had legal grounds to cancel the contract but it keeps me from having to tell Christy that her partner cannot step foot on our property again. I'll gladly share the contract and email to anyone so they can make up their own minds. During the visit Christy stayed very business like but her partner (?) completely took control. He did her no favors for advancing the company she founded.

John did an amazing job on our stairs! He just finished the job yesterday, and I couldn't be…read morehappier with the results. Before the work started, we had lined up about a 7 or 8 bids. From those, only half actually showed up to the appointment. John was by far the most responsive and the easiest to communicate with. Although the other contractors we talked to seemed capable... I wasn't 100% confident they understood what I wanted in our stairs. They spoke in "contractor terms" which went way over my head, or just nodded and said "yup, that's fine." The biggest thing I stressed during our appointment was that I wanted to make sure this didn't look like an "afterthought" to the house. I wanted it to look like it belonged there. John was able to take one look at the rest of our house and come up with an idea of what we wanted. He had an iPad with him, pulled up a bunch example photos... and they were perfect! Being able to visualize the project made me much more confidant that I wasn't about to waste my money on something I didn't like. John went over several options with us to help suit our budget, and when we found one that we were comfortable with, we happily signed. He was able to start right away and was very conscious of our time frame. (I only had about 2.5 weeks to get this project complete before a big party!) One thing I really liked was how NEAT he worked. I have an 11 month old son who gets into everything, so it was nice to come home to a house where tools were put neatly away, dust was swept up, and there were no exposed nails sitting around for my son to eat. He even had another person come to do a deep clean of our house and get rid of any dust that floated into our other rooms! I'm a happy camper! We're now thinking of having John come back to spruce up our 1970's fireplace mantle.

Objectively though, I'd rate his work the same even if it was the first time I'd met him. John did the wainscoting in the nursery for our first child. Although I'd seen some of his previous work and knew it was fantastic, I wasn't sure how this job would turn out. I can be pretty particular about things, and wasn't sure if the styling would come out how I wanted. That he is family added an extra dimension, as I'd have to be "happy" with his work even if it sucked. It most assuredly didn't "suck", and he far exceeded my expectations. The wainscoting makes the room "pop" and it is instantly something visitors key on as they enter the room. It adds a classic and cozy feel to the room for our first daughter. The craftsmanship is amazing; there isn't any sloppiness to his work. You can tell he really takes pride in what he does. Although there was a fair amount of wood to be cut, nothing ever escaped the room. I never saw dirt or wood dust anywhere else in the house. When he was done, the room was spotless. Let's face it, some people you don't really want around your most valuable possessions even if they do great work. Obviously I'm a bit biased since John is my wife's brother, but I'd have no problem with John working on my parent's house or have a moment's hesitation recommending him to a friend.
