I used to live in Medford and have been to Lower Forge Brewery 3-4 times over the years. I want to like it, I really do, because it has so many things going for it. The location is perfect - right on Main Street in the historic downtown area. There's a pleasant vibe in the tasting room with a variety of seating including a few leather couches. The staff are very friendly and attentive. They offer events like monthly trivia and monthly karaoke. But the beer. Sigh... I just can't get into it. Now, I'm no professional beer critic. I wouldn't say I have a discerning palate capable of detecting subtle notes of hop varietals. And taste in beer is of course subjective. So take this with a grain of salt. But I have definitely had a lot of beer in my life, and I just didn't enjoy the beer here. When I came here in July of 2022 for the first time in awhile, I had a flight and didn't enjoy what I had, but I wanted to give them another chance. But when I came back over a month later in August, they hadn't introduced a single new beer in that time. The menu only had six beers and two seltzers on tap. Of the beers I tried, the Troubadour (porter), Winter Witch (golden stout) and the Healthy, Wealthy and Weizen all lacked enough flavor and just seemed too watery to me. The Piney Punch (radler) was on the opposite end of the spectrum with loads of pineapple flavor. This was the one decent beer of the bunch, if pineapple beer is your thing. The last beer I tried was the Jabberhoppy, an Imperial IPA with 100 IBU meant to "showcase a balance at the upper limits of bitterness. This is a double IPA that packs together six of our favorite hops..." Where do I begin to describe this one? It was certainly interesting and unique, but not in a good way. Too bitter, not enough flavor, maybe just too many different hops for its own good. It just didn't taste like a normal double IPA. And this is certainly nitpicky, but the beer didn't seem cold enough when it was served. So overall, if you want a nice spot to hang with friends, maybe do some karaoke, this place is perfect. But if you're after excellent beer with more complexity, you might need to try elsewhere. read more

And d(uring quarantine they've changed their operations a bit, but are still offering the same great beer! Ordering is easy and can be done right on their website. You can purchase 32 or 64 oz growlers -with the option to purchase a new growler, or bring your own. They accept growlers from other breweries too! (Note - if you bring your own growler, the filling process will be slightly delayed as they offer a complementary growler cleaning before filling.) When you arrive to the brewery, just give them a call or text and they're come right to your car. I loved checking out this place! Easy to get to and side note, there is a parking lot around the corner in case you don't find street parking. This particular trivia night there was only 6 of us playing and two more people sitting at the bar. The women behind the bar were friendly. The guy doing the trivia was awesome. I had called ahead of time and was told they encourage BYOF, bring your own food. They supplied the plates and napkins, I had brought in a pizza. I really enjoyed a nice peach flavored beer here. Located in Medford on their Main Street and easy to miss! For whatever reason, our GPS took us down the street, which not a big deal... but it is located right across from The Pop Shop. There's a parking lot right across from it, otherwise, plenty of street parking available! I really liked the vibes inside. Nice decor. Lots of seating and open space. Super friendly, greeted right away. (I really like that instead of awkwardly standing there wondering what you have to do next lol). Brews Lots of variety on tap. Although they only had 6 beers on tap with 2 beer slushies that day, the choices were all really good! - 2 different shandies... a lemon one and a strawberry one. It was like drinking a hard lemonade and it was really refreshing on this super hot Jersey summer day. - 2 different IPAs... for those true IPA lovers... this is a light IPA in my opinion. I've started to like more IPAs the more I've been tasting them, and this is a subtle one. So for those wanting to venture into the IPA brews, this is great to start you off! I did try the beer slushies but was not really a fan.... But I think fun to have for those hot summer days and if you're not a true beer lover :-) All in all... great spot to check out if in the area! The town is even better to check out to make a day out of it. My brother and his wife recommended this spot for my Fiancé and I to meet them due to them having seltzers for her. It's a decently spacious brewery with a fair amount of seating spread throughout. The brewery tanks and area are in the rear of the building and viewable through large windows, which was a very nice tough. I also enjoyed browsing their logo merch. We mostly had the place to ourselves, as we were there around 530pm and they apparently do live music because a band began setting up as we were finishing up around 7pm. The staff was very friendly and courteous and the woman who waited on us at the bar was great. I wish I remembered her name. She even let me know they have a military discount after asking if I was military when asked how long they had been open because it had been quite a few years since I was last in the area. She also took a few pictures of my Fiancé and I in front of their logo and of course they turned out perfect. My fiancé loved her leche seltzer and talked about it the rest of our visit and said more than once she wants to return the next time we are in town. I settled on the winter warmer and enjoyed it very much. I supper my Fiancé's request to return so you'll be seeing us again! read more

Great Cranberry, lemon, and grapefruit beers! I don't typically prefer beer but those flavorful beers are delicious and refreshing! I go in just for these. The other beers aren't bad, just a regular beer flavor. Cute place to hang and drink. Owners are great. Lower Forge Brewery is a nice little spot in beautiful Downtown Medford, with fabulous service, a friendly atmosphere, and fresh beer. I also really like that it's partly woman owned, which is always a plus in the beer industry. You will also get a tour and learn about how they make their beer. The beers are accessible. They have a fairly big list for a small brewery. People who are used to Bud and Coors Light can make the transition to drinking craft beer by trying theirs. My preference is for more complex and bolder beers, however. They have trivia night, so definitely check their schedule if that's your thing. If you want a authentic brewery experience, delicious full flavored brews run don't walk to lower forge. Be ready to try multiple flights as each beer is better than the last. The fruit brews taste like they were just freshly squeezed and the porters body feels silky and perfectly aged. I could go on about the grapefruit and watermelon taste like they were picked on a sunny day. Clearly they only use excellent quality ingredients... no short cuts here. Beware small batches could run out quickly. This is a must for the true brewery-aficionado. read more

Friends of ours took us here on a Saturday night and we instantly fell in love! The cozy atmosphere, the fabulous bartenders who had great personalities and of course the beer are all to rave about! My husband is very into craft beer and I'm slowly starting to like beer, I typically go for a more sour beer or a gose. But the ichabodcran is truly amazing! Pola told ua to mix the cran and the piney punch it was so good! We returned the following Saturday we liked it so much! We will surely be regulars to this brewery! read more

There is definitely some good beer at Lower Forge, you just need to know how to pick them. I was in Medford and had a couple of hours to burn while my wife attended a bridal shower and Lower Forge was the place to be. I decided to explore their menu of beers and went with a flight on advice from the bartender as it was $9 for four 4oz pours. The best of the brews for me turned out to be: When Life gives you Lemons (A Lemon Radler which was very refreshing), Squeeze the day (a grapefruit Radler) and their Vertically Challenged that they had infused with Jalapeños! The latter beer was for slow sipping as the jalapeño flavor was intense in this brew, but enjoyable. I was disappointed in their Drop it like it's Hopped which tasted grassy and their Jersey Sesh which was just ehh. In all I had seven brews and took a howler (32 oz.)home of their "When Life Gives You Lemons" which my wife, daughter and son-in-law enjoyed! Food and Beverages 2-5 Beers range from very good to I'll put that one aside. There is no food but you can call for delivery or they have food trucks come in on some days. Service 5 The bartender and owner regaled me with history of the bar, brewing and local issues. There is no doubt they enjoy what they do. They were helpful and insightful. Atmosphere 4 Comfortable and appealing interior that gives a nice local bar feel. Price 4.5 Good prices on beer and howler/growlers. Need some work on quality of some beers. OA 4-4.5. This brewery is adorable and in an awesome location. I have been here a few times now. The environment is very cozy, people can bring their own food if they want, they have board games to play, and there are tons of weekly events. They offer a ton of really great varieties of beer for the beer expert or a newbie (like me). I always order a flight so I can try what new flavors they have. SO far my favorites were their pumpkin, cranberry, and their grapefruit. There were some negatives I couldn't help but mention that bothered me because I have been here a few times now. I typically bring my own growler to breweries to fill. They offer an extensive list of beers but you can only fill certain flavors and some of the ones I wanted to fill weren't on the list. Then I asked if I could buy the can versions and they didn't have anything in stock, and they haven't since I've been back the last couple of times. I also wanted to buy a mini growler and they were out of both sizes. This is a big miss for some people and you guys are really missing out on some serious cash cash not keeping in stock! A good amount of variety in the beers on tap. Lighter fruity beers, middle of the range stuff that's not too hoppy, and then your stouts/imperial stouts, and Ipas. A slew of choices. The Watermelon Wanderlust is my fav in this hot summer! But looking forward to some of the dark, spicy beers coming this fall. Atmosphere is great! Walked in right as they were opening. We got a very warm and friendly welcome. After a very informative tour of the brew room, I enjoyed a flight of very well crafted beers. Each one tasted as described. The grapefruit and the lemon shanties were excellent. Highly recommended. The Amber lager was very good. A worthy competitor to Yeungling lager and another good Amber lager, Nashamity lager. All 3 are very drinkable. The 4th offering was a very pleasant surprise. A dark lager that is aged in whiskey barrels. This beer compares very well to Innes & Gunn imported from Scotland. I&G has a heavier infusion of scotch to its flavor. Lower Forge offering is a milder version. Both are unusual but very very good. read more

A new local business has blossomed on Main Street in Medford. Lower Forge Brewing Co has brought hand crafted beer to Medford and they have done a great job. So far they have three offers and promises of many many more. The Healthy, Wealthy & Wiezen is crisp and refreshing - perfect for summer. Then you have the option of running it through watermelon and lime to make their Weizenhiemer. Even more perfect for summer! The black IPA on CO2 or Nitro is the final beer I tried. Delicious beer that pairs perfect with a beef burger from the Pop Shop across the street. Go for a tour of the brewing room and then taste beers to your hearts content.
