The bartender was very knowledgeable in the selection; he guided us as well, and having tasted quite a number of whiskies during our visit, the 2 he served us were easily at the top of our tasting list in all of Scotland. When it came time for our actual restaurant seating time, we headed back to check in, where Angela greeted us and took us to our table. Our seat was in the corner of the restaurant, next to the window, but with a large column blocking our view of Portree. (You know "The View," which the place is named after.) I asked if we could wait for another table to open up. Angela immediately got a frown on her face and responded: "If you want to wait another hour." Those words on their own were hard enough to hear after having already been in the restaurant (at the bar) for over an hour...but the way she said it was snide, mean, and it felt like she was scolding us. And then she said it a second time. It was just one sentence from her...but it made us feel terrible, like we had made some kind of offensive error asking for a different table (with an actual view). We completely understand that sometimes requests are not possible, but surely there could have been a nicer way she could have communicated the answer to us. Maybe "Ahh, I'm so sorry, but all the other tables are booked. It could be up to an hour wait if you want." Angela could have been much kinder, but instead she made us feel like she was doing us a favor by allowing us to be in the restaurant at all. What would have been a 5-star experience overall gets dinged an entire star because of that tiny, terrible reaction with her. Writing this a couple of weeks later, I still can feel the sinking feeling in my stomach after she said what she said the way she said it. Maybe Angela was having a bad day. Maybe she was fed up with customers in general...but that one tiny interaction will stick with us for a long time. Our server was lovely, and the food we got was great. I appreciated having fine-dining vegetarian options. I had the Twice Baked Scottish Cheddar Soufflé. It was light and fluffy and served on a gorgeous bed of different colored tomatoes and lettuce, and topped with pesto. I enjoyed it. My wife got the wedge salad, which was also really good...a full wedge of bib lettuce and a nice dressing...very fresh. She also had scallops as a starter...a cold dish, smoky and tasty. (According to her, I'm a vegetarian.) The bread was cute...a little baked ball...fun to look at, served with a dollop of butter served on a on a stone slab. (Though it was cold on the inside, so wondering if this may have been out of the fridge or freezer for a while.) We saw a couple other tables order chips, and they looked so good we added an order...these were perfect, lightly coated with truffle oil and parmesan...easily the best chips we had in all of Scotland. We finished with cheesecake for dessert. It was topped with raspberries and a raspberry compote. It was served with raspberry sorbet and topped with a wrapped waffle cookie-like topping filled with a delicious chocolate ganache with freeze-dried raspberries sticking out either end. Raspberry-heavy but quite indulgent. We enjoyed the food a lot. Our server was nice and sweet. Our experience at the bar ahead of time was fantastic. The view could have been better based on where we were seated. Unfortunately, the thing that we'll remember the most about our experience here was the egregious interaction with Angela.

The two problems with the restaurant were they had the heat turned on very high, it was uncomfortably hot and I would honestly rather have been cold. The other problem was they were very short staffed so the meal started out great but our server was invisible toward the end and we sat around for 20 minutes trying to see him so we could leave. Haggis + Paneer Pakora: Great Haggis fusion dish, felt traditional and yet paid homage to some of the new cultures that make up the UK. Slow Braised Lamb Shank: Rosemary Infused Mashed Potato and Roasted Root Vegetable. Very tender and delicious, our whole family shared this even though it started off as just my wifes dinner. Armed with our trusty gas stove, we searched the island before stumbling across Anchor Seafoods at the end of the pier. It was closed when we first approached it - were we to be twarted at the final turn??! No, we popped back 15 minutes later and the lovely lady had returned and we were able to peruse a fine selection of freshly caught seafood. The shop owner was quite charmed by my boyfriend, and seemed completely amazed that a Brazilian should turn up in her little shop in Portree!! The fish selection was super fresh and so appealing. It took a lot of resistance and will power not to walk away with too much, but we had to bear in mind we had no way of storing the produce. It was quite pricey but we decided it would be worth every penny. We settled for some scallops and prawns and headed off to find a secluded section of beach where we could cook up our feast and make all our fantasies come true!! Five pages of the six-page menu were drinks, coffee, and alcohol. This is not a food place. It looks like one. Based on old reviews and photos, maybe it used to be one. I did come in the afternoon, so maybe it's better for breakfast. Or maybe not. For the amount and quality of sandwich I got for 5 quid, I should have just gotten a meal deal at the co-op. Genuinely, a meal deal sandwich would have been better quality. My ham and cheese did have both ingredients, but the cheese was shredded and the ham was very thin-sliced and overwhelmed by the cheese. My guess is that it's made to be toasted, hence the shredded cheese, and that was an option for 20 pence-- but why on God's green Earth would you serve a cold sandwich with shredded cheese? The bread was bland and basic-- fine if you're making yourself something at home, but not something worth paying for at all. (Again, it was like a meal deal sandwich. But worse. I would never disrespect a meal deal sandwich like this.) Based on the service (or lack thereof) we received from the very beginning, I should have listened to my intuition and gotten up to find somewhere better. The wait staff are called that, I assume, because they will wait ten minutes for you to ask them if they can take your order, only to be repeatedly rude to you when you politely ask for the bare minimum amount of service. Full disclosure: I have worked in food service before. I sympathize with anyone who has to deal with customers. But when we weren't served, and went up to ask if our order could be taken, we were snapped at and told to go back to our table. No "apologies, someone will be there shortly". Not even a "sorry for the wait, we're very busy right now". Just "go back to your table". So we did. Which was a huge mistake. I've lived in Scotland for more than a year and I don't know if I've ever had a meal that depressing since living here. And I've made Pasta in Sauce at 3am with just water because I ran out of milk. I won't be too hard on our table's waiter because he was very young and inexperienced, and I expect he's received minimal, if any, training on how to wait tables. I honestly felt bad for him. He looked as though he would rather be anywhere else. In that way I felt a real connection to the wait staff; in fact, it was the only time I actually felt truly seen by them. I, too, would rather have been anywhere else. But that's not necessarily the vibe you want to be getting when you walk into a place. This place would be better off selling ready-made, takeaway sandwiches rather than masquerading as a restaurant and disappointing us at every turn. Seriously. Not to quote other media in a literal Yelp review, but my expectations were low and I was still let down. The only saving grace of this place was that it was clean and had wifi that was strong enough for me to send this picture of my sandwich to my friends and go "????????". Also there were two very cute dogs outside, although I don't believe they were hired by the restaurant. If you're desperate for food and don't really mind what you're spending money on, then this place is fine. Like I said, at least it's clean and has decent wifi. But I would not waste my time here twice.

We had lunch at The Granary, which was just OK. What we really enjoyed was having a mid-afternoon snack (afternoon tea), as they serve excellent coffee and tea drinks. The cappuccino and chai tea lattes were very good. They have a special drink on the menu that was absolutely decadent- the Hot Chocolate Royale! A case of pies, cakes, and treats is made fresh daily to tempt you, and everything is really good. The only tricky thing is the QR codes are used to place your own order, but if your phone gets poor service, you will have to order at the counter and tell them your table number. No-one told us this, and we had waited for quite a while until we figured it out, as the table service is minimal.

The server said that they want to be more relaxed and not work for that 'star'. I would certainly not have known the difference. The 8 courses are listed in the menu. It is a fixed menu and fixed price. The choices are to request a wine pairing and coffee/tea at the end. We chose the red wife from Slovakia that was dry and quite nice. It's not possible to describe each of the courses. My favorites were Hebridean haggis-haggis with a turnip espuma(or foam) and buckwheat. The combination of flavors and textures was amazing. The other two dishes I lived were the halibut in a chicken reduction and small veges. It was so fresh and flaky and moist. The Seabuckthorn curd was incredible. That plant does not grow in N.A. the berry was pureed and explained by yogurt ice cream. There 2 small tufts of white chocolate infused work pine oil. I've never tasted something like that dessert. Make a reservation here if you can. The price is £105 from £95 from a review 3 years ago. It's well worth it.

When talking about working hard, this is the definition of it. Hopefully some of the staffing challenges they currently face get addressed to provide more consistent service for guests and a less hectic experience for the crew. So, book early, get the trout porridge, the delectable focaccia, some Pommes Anna and fill in the rest with freshest seafood. Happiness will undoubtedly persist from there.

We walked about onto their wharf, and at the very end, is a small seafood market with local seafooed, and with a limited menu of prepared food. But what a find! We bought a prawn tail salad sandwich, consting of a large portion of their langoustine tails (these are small ones minus the heads, but peeled and mixed with dressing and greens) on a gread artisan roll. The best prepared sandwich I've ever had, with super fresh, just-caught morsels of seafood goodness. While there we picked up an additional container of the tails and some anchovies prepared in oil. what a great lunch, sitting right at the end of the dock, with ginger beer and a very tart mint lemonade. It's the kind of fisherman's lunch that you always dream about havinb!!
