Served raw lobster. Management refused to let me order anything else.
My husband I were on honeymoon in Scotland. We enjoyed a meal at The Claymore the night before and decided to come back for our last night in Skye to have full lobsters. When our lobsters came out, mine was gray and cold - obviously raw. I asked the waitress why no one looked at my dish, because you could clearly see that it wasn't cooked. Accidents happen, no problem. I sent it back and ordered the salmon special instead (I was pretty turned off of the lobster at that point). Less than 10 minutes later, management came by with another lobster for me. I explained that I didn't want it and had ordered the salmon (well done) instead. Management said that this was the second fresh lobster they had made for me and that it was the most expensive item on the menu. Seriously? Why is that an acceptable response? It's not my fault the chef didn't cook it. Also, the restaurant was packed. Why couldn't they just give this "fresh" lobster to someone else? Management would not let me order anything else, but offered me a free dessert as an apology. We refused the dessert. In retrospect, my husband I should have just walked out. But we didn't. I couldn't really finish my lobster - I was pretty put off by the whole experience. When the bill came, they charged me for half a lobster instead of a whole. Frankly, it should have been removed entirely, especially since I didn't want it and told management that we did not enjoy our meal. Also, the price of the half lobster was very close to the salmon special I had asked for instead. Our whole experience at The Claymore really ruined our evening. Anyways, we ran into some fellow travellers from our tour and they too had negative experiences at The Claymore. We're going to tell our tour company not to recommend this restaurant anymore. On a side note, I had been told many times from other travellers that Scottish hospitality, especially in restaurants, was seriously lacking. I had always dismissed such statements, but apparently, there's some truth in that when it comes to The Claymore. Go somewhere else in town. They only care about about the money here. read more
