In fact, after we moved, we had some behavioral issues pop up that we didn't really know how to handle, so we send an email over to Heather (the owner) and she gave us some great tips and since she knew our dog, it was more personalized. I would recommend to everyone.

My crazy red Golden Retriever was enrolled in their board & train from 03232026 - 04102026. Makayla…read morewas his main trainer. He was with them a week and then on the second week I had a 2 hour training session with Ace & Makayla. Wow, I could hardly believe how much he had improved! 3rd week I had another training session - they needed to train ME to do the correct things. After I picked him up at the end of week 3 he was so much improved. He knew "place, off, heel, sit, down, stay, come, etc. He still needed reinforcement as he is high energy & needs to have his reset button pushed. Since then Ace has gone to "Beyond Daycare" at Barks & Rec. I try to get him in twice a week. I call it B&C. It's more than just playing with other dogs. It's structured with training & they work on his basic commands. Recently he wasn't able to go for almost 2 weeks due to circumstances beyond our control. He went back yesterday & one of the employees, Rachel; said he had a wonderful time & was the bestest boy! I know he missed being there! If you have a high energy dog, consider checking into Barks & Rec Beyond Daycare - I hesitate to give this glowing review only because their spots are limited & I might not to get my boy in if their Beyond Daycare fills up!!

This "obedience" school was a complete waste of time and more so, our money. The simple things we…read moresaid we wanted when we enrolled them was for our puppies to learn to stay, come when called, stop jumping up on us, stop pulling on the leashes when walking. It took a week for us to finally get them to write us daily progress reports (they normally don't give them until the end we were told! REALLY?!) Now we know why. Our dogs got worse after the classes, and none of what we asked for was at all accomplished! All we heard was, "they had so much fun interacting with other dogs, and playing, and running on the treadmill." We never asked for them to be trained on a damn treadmill and to play with other dogs. I came in one morning and found a dog UNATTENDED and leashed on the tread mill! If it had fallen there's no telling how bad it would have been hurt!! The excuse was it was one of the staff's dogs. So that makes it ok to leave it unattended?! Good thing it wasn't one of mine! One afternoon I had to take them home WET in the car because they were in the pool. No one bothered to dry them, so our car got all wet. We live on a lake. We didn't send our dogs to an expensive obedience school to play with other dogs and in a freakin' pool! They are full of excuses and justifications why our dogs are now WORSE when they get home than when they went. This is NOT an obedience school. This is a scam to take your money, placate and patronize you about how well your dog is learning. They want us to use shock collars with big dangerous probes tights against their necks because they can't do their jobs and train them. Now they don't come when they're called, won't get down when they jump up, won't stop dragging you on their leashes, and don't hardly even remember their names when we call them anymore. They were far more obedient before we sent them to this high priced (dis)obedience school. We paid for them to play everyday for two weeks!Hope I'm not too vague, but I am really pissed off to be taken advantage off by these unqualified scammers!

Though the clinic has grown with time, adding another full-time vet, the service is always personal and complete. Everything is explained fully, options are explored to make an informed decision as to the course of treatment which is best for your pet and your family. The fees are reasonable and the service excellent. You are as involved in your pet's treatment as you wish to be (some people don't like to see blood draws or even claw trimmings--you don't have to if you don't want to.) I'm on my second diabetic cat, and after 6 months we are seeing if he can be taken off of insulin. When my eldest male cat (15) was brought in by a neighbor, deathly ill, I was contacted as soon as they scanned his chip because they knew how important he was too me, and that I would be likely to want to save him if possible. When it turned out that he could not be saved, he and I made the decision to euthanise immediately to avoid prolonging his suffering. The vets and staff were very supportive in helping me make and implement this painful but necessary decision. He was peacefully and painlessly assisted while I held him on my lap and said goody. When my parent's elderly beagle became ill, and we were unable to find a cause for several months, when it became obvious that she was failing her illness was pared down to 2 possibilities, both of which were incurable, I monitored her quality of life for several weeks until it was obvious that she was no longer a happy beagle (a beagle dragging it's tail between it's legs i a very unhappy beagle!) When I took her in to be euthanized, Dr. Brakeen and staff were very sensitive to my feelings and my dog was quietly and peacefully assisted in a quick and painless death. Dr. Brakken always listens to whatever research I've found regarding aliments of y animals, and does a good job of researching anything she's not already familiar. In 57 years of owning pets, there is only one vet I have had who might surpass Dr.Brakken--but only because she was willing to make a 30 mile trip out to vaccinate my cats...and she left practice to teach at the UW-Madison Veterinary Hospital. I wholeheartedly recommend Brakken to anyone who cares about their animals as part of their family--they will receive treatment with every bit as much consideration (maybe more) than your family doctor.

As the owner of three Labrador Retrievers and well used to the ins and outs of boarding, I felt…read morethat the previous review of the K9 Dorms was obviously written by someone who had had a very bad day and would like to respond to her criticisms. I, also, have boarded elderly dogs and realize everytime that I board them that they are more susceptible to infections such as Bordatella not only due to their age but also to the stress of being away from their homes. I suspect that this particular dog had harbored the Bordatella bacteria in its system and the coincidence it had of developing into a full blown case of this non-fatal disease was caused by the stress more than anything else. Elderly dogs also have lost the elasticity of the alveolar sacs in their lungs simply due to aging; in addition, bull dogs with their lovely pug-like faces are probably susceptible to respiratory afflictions mainly due to the diminished airspace from those short noses - having boarded here many times and for extended periods, I can honestly say that my dogs have never developed any communicable disease. One of the things that both I and my dogs love about being boarded here is that they are allowed to go outside for a run and are walked several times a day. At other kennels, there is an additional charge for them to be allowed to get outside; to have someone attend them is an additional charge. I have also boarded during very hot spells and appreciate their being cooled down - unlike humans, dogs have enough insulation to where it is difficult to cool them, especially since they can only pant and perspire through the pads of their feet - cool water really is beneficial - their insulation protects them from chilling. I have not boarded anywhere that didn't charge a fee per day rather than by a 24 hour period so if this woman was getting a discount at another boarding kennel, it was no doubt due to her being a regular boarder rather than standard procedure. I have never had a problem with the kennel not being open during the specified times but do understand that emergencies happen and it resulted in an annoyance, nothing else - none of us like being inconvenienced; it sounds like a call was left at the preferred number - maybe it could have avoided by listing a cell phone number and not the home phone one. One of my dogs has really hated being boarded but when I pull up in front of K9 Dorms, she perks up, wags her tail, and can't wait to go inside - that in itself says a lot about what kind of care she gets. I have recommended K9 Dorms to several of my friends and they all have loved it and both Karen and Katie (though one of them did say that she had a problem with her dog not wanting to go home...) - I feel this criticism is unfair - perhaps the writer has simply forgotten the annoyances of other businesses.

When I adopted my rescue dog, Tiki, six years ago, I asked my neighbor where they took their dog…read more They said they'd always been very happy with the care she got at Westgate, so I went there. They were absolutely right. Because I'm a little complicated to schedule sometimes, we've actually seen all five vets at various times. Each has been kind, caring, thorough, professional and expert. They won't let me diagnose her and request meds on the phone, which would be easier sometimes, but it's not about what's easy. It's about what's best for Tiki, and they hold to that standard always. When she tore her CCL, they carefully explained three care options. They did not push me to choose one over the others. They would have given the best treatment for any option I chose. I chose surgery, and her care was wonderful. There's a specialist who comes in from out of town to do this procedure for several veterinary practices in the area, and Westgate provided the before and after care. The whole staff was very patient when I would call with my many "worried Mom" questions afterward. I recommend them without reservation.

The receptionist told me that…read moreneutering a seven-month-old small male dog would require a $200 deposit before the animal could be seen, yet she could not initially quote the cost of the procedure. We need to know the total cost before moving forward, whether payment is due in advance, in person, or at the end of the visit. In addition to the $200 deposit, which would be applied to the total, she quoted $42 for a rabies vaccination and $75 for a wellness exam. I explained that we already had a DAH-BADC form from an out-of-area clinic documenting a wellness exam on 4/29/26 and asked whether providing it would eliminate the wellness fee. She put me on hold, and I assumed she would consult someone--perhaps a supervisor or veterinarian--who could provide an accurate total. Instead, another staff member came on the line and asked me to explain the issue again. She ultimately stated that the neuter would cost $350, plus the additional fees. Westgate Animal Hospital, please train your staff to explain your fees clearly, accurately, and concisely.
