the best overall for any fish. long time business, knowledgeable and helpful. excellent selection.

Staff was incredibly helpful with recommendations, amazing selections of live plants, drift wood and rocks.

It's hard to find any business anymore that isn't either completely useless. Or just trying to sell you on things. Let alone a little of both. This place is absolutely neither of those things and the first time in a long time I walked in and out of any business and genuinely was thrilled with my experience. Went in for my first time yesterday every question I had was answered with great info. And learnt a lot more that I didn't no walking into the store. Beyond grateful for my experience and will be back multiple times as I keep stocking up my new aquarium!! Was wonderful meeting Steve and can't wait to be back!! read more

I cannot say enough good things about this store. I recently started a 75 gallon fish tank and had no idea what I was doing, but Steve and Merlea were so understanding, helpful and knowledgeable. They made the whole process enjoyable. Not to mention their large selection of fish. Unbelievable customer service. read more

Exceptional selection of hard scape materials, live plants and most importantly fish along with food you won't find at a box store like live brine shrimp, ghost shrimp, etc,. The owners are extremely knowledgeable and are just good people plain and simple. Well worth a drive to visit even if you're not local. read more

Coming from an aquatic background I saw that this place was a good spot so I decided to check it out. To beat the traffic I killed time and visited this store. They just had a shipment in so bags were floating in the tanks. Once you walk down the stairs you will see a pond on your left along with drift wood. I was amazed of the beautiful drift wood and prices too. Wish I could pick a few out but my East coast trip has just begun with little space in the rental van. Looks like it was a family business as I saw the mom and looks like here kids doing the tanks. The fish were nice but I wasn't getting anything that I can get locally. The decorations was decent price where I did purchase a pack of fake plants. Parking was ok located right out the store. And customer service was up to par. read more

I have been keeping freshwater fish for about six years, and Lovely Pets has provided me with absolutely happy fish and aquatic invertebrates with friendly service and advice to boot. They have a great selection of both salt and freshwater fish, and their tanks are clean as a whistle -- no nasty surprises after introducing new fish to your tanks. More importantly, the staff inquire about your tank set-up before the final sale to ensure that you aren't overbuying. And if you're not a fan of fish, just go to Lovely Pets for their friendly store cats. Trust me -- its the "purrfect" aquatic therapy. read more

I loved this place for so long but unfortunately that all changed this week, I was in looking for some fish to add to my tank and spotted some lovely dark orange fish and asked the lady what they were and she said "Danios" so i said "will the work well with my current stock of fish" I have; 2 Bala Shark 1 Red Tail Shark 6 tetra 1 pleco 3 clown loach 2 glow tetra 2 mollies To which she replied "yes they'll be ok but don't ad any neon tetras because they'll eat them" I said fair enough and brought two of these guys home, well here is where the fun began, two days passed and they stayed quiet then I noticed that they were pushing the clown loaches about a bit and kept an eye on things, next thing one of my 2 year old bala sharks turns up dead, then I noticed the two "danios" picking on something so I looked and they had caught and half eaten one of my mollies, I did some further research online and learned that these were non in fact Danios but instead they were Blood Parrot Cichlids. Firstly if I had known they were cichlids obviously I would not have added them to a freshwater community tank but secondly how did this sales person not know what fish she was selling me? Anyway I managed to get the two Culprits out of the tank and brought them back to the store and met the same sales lady again and said these guys are bullies and they are stressing out and killing my fish, to which she says "oh the parrots causing trouble?" (Oh now she knew her fish) " yeah those guys aren't a very nice fish" ( you weren't saying that last week when you were taking my money for them) she netted them out of my bucket and handed me back my bucket without so much as a sorry or hint of a refund. I had to bite my lip and walk out, so disappointed I have had nothing but a good relationship with this shop for so long and no problems with any other of the sales team only this one person, two stars for the continued good work of the rest of the team at lovely pets read more

I have been going to Lovely Pets since it opened in Quincy, MA and Ken was the owner. He was a very special person. So kind, patient, helpful, and considerate, and he made you smile a lot! Ken's store was always my favorite place to go. Not only did he have the best fish and aquarium products, but he and his staff always went the extra mile to make you feel welcome, and help you. They were always, so polite, kind, and friendly. It was a great place to go! I hadn't seen any of them in years because I moved many times and no longer have fish. So when I saw that there was a place in Kingston named Lovely Pets, I wanted to stop in and say hi. That is when I learned, Ken was no longer with us. It was sad to hear! I will miss him! But on a great note - Steve, who was Ken's employee, bought the place with his wonderful wife Marlea, and eventually moved the store to Kingston, MA. It was great news, and so wonderful to see them and catch up. The store is absolutely beautiful, with so many unique, awesome things to look at, and so clean. It was such a pleasure to talk to such nice people again. Their employee that I spoke to, was also kind, polite, and friendly. Steve, is very knowledgeable in everything that has to do with aquariums, ponds, and fish, both salt and freshwater. If you love fish, and/or have or want to start an aquarium or pond, or buy more fish, Lovely Pets Aquarium is the ONLY PLACE TO GO!!!! The quality of their products and livestock is A+++. They have unique items that you can't get anywhere else. Their knowledge and customer service is the best that I have ever experienced, and their prices are reasonable too. IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO GO TO, AND IT'S A HAPPY PLACE! IT'S A VERY RARE PLACE - ONE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD STOP IN TO SEE! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE AT LOVELY PETS!!!!! I am sure Ken is proud and smiling! Kathy C read more

I went here to ask a simple question and Marly behind the desk was beyond rude towards me. She might as well have told me to F off. Idk about their service, but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone just because of how they treat someone for no good reason. read more

Lovely Pets. Man that's a stupid name. And a less than lovely shop. This shop is located in an almost impossible to locate corner of Quincy Center. It's in the basement. And you can't park right outside. Which sucks if you're buying substrate or a new tank. The good- decent selection of freshwater fish, lots of rainbow fish and large cichlids. Good selection of marine stuff too. They get huge shipments of driftwood from time to time... pretty awesome. Decent selection of plants, too. Sometimes they get some interesting stuff, like these enormous gold gouramis I bought there a couple years ago. Never seen them so large, and they were cheap. They're never very busy and the staff is friendly. Oh and they have a kitty! The bad... the place is dank and dirty. We're talking wet carpet. Don't ask to use the restroom, you don't want to go back there. The tanks all look a little grungy. I've seen a few floaters that the staff seem to just ignore. I saw an almost dead betta on the floor and an employee came and just plopped him back in the tank. I would think they'd quarantine the poor guy, make sure he's healthy before they sell him. Almost every time I've asked a question I've had to wait around while whoever I asked goes to find someone who may have a clue. Their supplies are all dusty and a poor selection. My biggest complaint- I got some pretty lousy advice on lighting and spent a lot of money on a light that turned out to be very under-powered for my tank and killed a lot of plants. I felt like the answer to any question I had was "um... Yeah, yeah! that'll work!" just to make the sale. Learned my lesson, I do my homework now. Lovely Pets has a long way to go if they're gunna compete with places like Ned's and Tropic Isle, but it is nice to have a fish-only shop in the area Sometimes you can get some good stuff here. I haven't scratched the place off my list of places to shop, but it's not my first choice. read more

This is a fun place to escape winter for an hour or so. I went here today for the first time. I set up my fish tank a few weeks ago. Please hang in there with me, for just last week I thought PetSmart was the only game in town for buying fish. Compared to the Petmarts, this place seems to me to be fish heaven. They had all kinds of plants, coral, fresh and salt water fish. They even had some sharks. I saw an eel that cost $699.00! The staff was very helpful and patient (My wife and I disagreed on many choices of what and how many fish to get). Parking is an issue if you have a lot to buy. Also if you wear glasses, they may completely fog up by the time you get to the store downstairs. So watch your step if you wear glasses or have trouble seeing in dark cramped spaces. I purchased 8 fish today for my 30 gallon fresh water tank. I 'll post any updates if there are any casualties within the next 7 days. read more

One of the best salt water needs & customer service in Boston I've been coming here since I was little and Steve and his wife are awesome they helped me when I first started out with salt water fish and now I have a 125 gallon tank, plus a seahorse tank. Steve helped me with curing all the diseases my fish has caught, helped me with my corals and clams and even helping my dad build a sump for our 125 gallon tank. Steve and his crew never pressure you into buying anything if anything he finds the cheapest ways to building your tank. Although his wife may seem rude at first, she's not at all! Maybe that's just how she sounds haha but she is a pleasure and is very nice! read more

Steve is awesome! His worker helped me a lot too but Steve is the guru. He was very friendly, not pushy at all, had tons of knowledge and gave me a lot of advice. His young worker was a nice guy, helped a lot but doesn't know as much. The fish are always disease free, clean and exhibit good behavior. I bought 6 fish for my saltwater, all the fish are eating and doing great. There are only a few places that I trust for fish and this is one of them! Go here and ask for Steve! read more

The people at this store are great and knowledgeable. Great customer service! They will be happy to answer any questions you have. The store has a great collection of fish, invertebrates, and saltwater fish! They also have a great selection of hardscaping materials, aquarium supplies, and aquatic plants at good prices. I usually visit the store at least once a week and never leave dissatisfied [or empty handed]. If you are new to aquariums or unsure about something make sure you do your research beforehand. The people here will answer questions for you but remember its on your end to do the proper research on setting up a new aquarium or getting a new fish. For example, dropping in a $200 Arowana in a new tank on day 1 without acclimating it will literally murder the fish [I was there when a reviewer below admitted to doing that and still wanted a refund/exhange, Ha!]. This is a good resorce for newbies by the way: https://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Beginning_Fishkeeping read more

I agree, this place may seem a little dark and cluttered, but I think their knowledge and friendliness more than make up for it. A lot of those big chain places don't know the first thing about fish or aquariums and they definitely don't care about yours. Lovely Pets is the opposite. They are always willing to discuss with me what's going on with my tank, explain what will resolve the issues and even test my water for free. I never feel pressured to buy more than what I need. I've even called them and picked their brains over the phone when I had a semi-emergency. Even over the phone they were extremely helpful and pleasant. If you really care about having a healthy habitat for your pets, not just flashy showroom to buy from, then this place is right for you. I won't go anywhere else! read more

I personally like this place. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. There ARE parking spaces for those of you buying a new tank ( like me) or other heavy stuff. The guy working there actually got it up the stairs and put it in my car for me. They have a lot of great fish, plants, tanks, rocks, filters and tank cleaning supplies. Simply put: I will be coming back. read more

This fish pet store is great but the appearance not so lovely. It is very much a basement with lots of tanks of fish. It is damp and a little smelly. So why the 4 stars you ask? Because they have a large selection of fish and are very knowledgeable. The owner is super nice and their prices are lower than chain pet stores. I recently purchased a beta fish here and he is very healthy. The owner actually encouraged me to let them know how everything was going with the fish in the future and please let them know if i end up having any problems. read more

This place is amazing! They have a small entrance, not very noticeable, but as soon as you walk down the steps the place is enormous! I would guess at least 200 or 300 tanks with fish, plants, coral, and anemones. A lot of different sizes, colors, and water types. The place is very clean, no fish odor, and with the amount of animals and product very well organized. read more

I absolutely love this place! My boyfriend and I go here at least once a week, generally on the weekends and I am so highly impressed with the quality of the fish, the variety, and the professionalism of the staff. Prices on certain things may be a little high, but they always have a large table of very useful items on sale, of which I wasn't moving in three months so that I could stock up on as much as I can while here to be able to open my own fish store eventually. I actually got my first Discus at this store, and they are the most beautiful discus, and I am always impressed with their selection of discus, and any other fish. Ugh! Don't even get me started on their saltwater selection! If I could start a saltwater tank, this would be where I buy all of my fish to fill that tank. Such a great place! read more

I am so fortunate to live near a great family-owned place like this. The staff are all very knowledgeable and incredibly friendly, and you can tell they're all passionate about and enjoy keeping aquariums. They're willing and able to answer a wide range of questions and do special orders on both fish and plants. I can't speak for their saltwater selection since I only keep freshwater, but their freshwater selection is pretty great. It seems like every time I go in there they have something new, and they carry a lot of specialty products that the Petco down the street doesn't, including serious medications and specialty substrate. They sell a substrate there that I can't remember the name of it, but I think it's live or something? I was a little dubious because it's expensive ($30something per bag), but that stuff is wonderful, and it adds a really natural look to my aquarium. My only complaints are: Their labeling is pretty bad. I know they're a small operation and can't always have the same things in the same tank, but it can be really frustrating to find what you're looking for sometimes. Their bettas always look miserable. That isn't entirely their fault because of how bettas are sold, but their selection is always sorry-looking and ragged. Also I know it's just business, but I really hate that they sell tiny betta bowls. I get mad whenever I see itty-bitty betta tanks. I'm dubious about their plants. I bought some and got a really bad snail infestation. Not sure if it was their tanks, or their suppliers, but I don't think I'll buy plants from there again. The snails could have technically come from a Petco plant, but I've bought plants from Petco/Petsmart for years with no problems, so it was either a fluke or it was Lovely Pets. read more

Ok so The owners wife is very nice and the owner has a bad attitude.. I called seeing if they stocked a bulb for my T3 and the owners wife answered and wasn't sure if they stocked it so proceeded to ask her husband. I could hear his response in the background saying " I don't know, tell him to bring the damn thing down here"... I told her that was not professional and hung up the phone... About 2 minutes later I get a call back and its the owner personally apologizing.... I told him it was too late and he should work on his people skills... I was so glad that i made a trip down to this awesome store despite of being stuck in traffic for hours during rush hour. Knowledgable owner and staffs and their passion in their job/hobby at this store will give you an awesome experience in shopping for your fish tank and any information you need to take care of your fish. Bring a sample of your aquarium water, they can test the water quality for you and let you know what is going wrong with the water and how to fix it! For the first time that i was corrected to discontinue my obsessive weekly water change for my 29gal with 5 goldfish as i was told by staff at Petsmart or Petco. I finally found the answer to my question of why my tank has never been cycled even though it has been running for 8-9 weeks now. Come and check out this place and support local business! read more

This place is awesome. I've been a customer from way back, believe me when I say Steve's customer service is second to none. A simple example... i changed my tank around (new filter, gravel, decorations) my fish started to die one by one. Steve tested the water, suggested that I let the tank rest for awhile until the good bacteria builds up and the amonia goes down. Didn't suggest big purchases of chemicals, just rest and come back once a week for free water testing. That was 5 weeks ago, just put a couple of fish in today to see how they do then I'll start to repopulate the aquarium. Steve and his staff are true hobbyists and I feel the fish are their main concern along with a truley happy customer Thanks for being there Bob & Patti read more

The first thing I noticed upon arriving at Lovely Pets is the friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable service of the owner, Steve and his wife, Marlea. Their employees are very helpful as well. It is a very "lovely" environment to be in when shopping for my aquatic hobby. I can tell that these folks truly love and care for their business. I had fresh water aquariums for many years and decided to switch to a marine aquarium. They walked me step by step through the process of setting up my aquarium. They were not forceful to make a sell. In fact, they kept telling me to bring in water samples for tests to ensure the water is healthy and ready for live fish and corals. And now I have an extremely healthy, gorgeous aquarium!!! Their livestock of fresh and saltwater is quite impressive! I can find just about anything I need for my aquarium. Tank after tank of beautiful fish, two large tanks of live rocks and the back of the store features 5 large aquariums of live corals. Marlea also informed that they have shipments every week; clients can come in on Thursdays to browse for new arrivals. Their electronic and chemical supply is very organized, and they are right there to guide me through. Their pricing is very decent. I can always trust that what I purchase is worth my money and will be healthy! Their water system is very clean. I am a neat-freak, so that is quite important!!! The location, to be honest, was challenging to find at first, but who doesn't own a smart phone with navigation or a GPS nowadays!?! They do have three parking spots in front of the store and along the side of the store is a parking lot/garage. If you purchase heavy items, their employees will assist you with the lifting/carrying. I have had my reef aquarium for over a year now, healthy, beautiful and thriving! I could not be happier with their service and supply. I am one happy customer! read more

I just discovered the definition of "stingy" at this place. I have been shopping there for fish for quite few years. Recently, I donated about 30 fish to the store (over 100$ of profit for them). I also made a $30 purchase at the same time (the place is overpriced by the fish is healthy and robust). I asked the owner to give me ONE guppy fish in return for the donation of 30, and she flat out refused. She is generally not pleasant with customers but seriously, how cheap and uptight can you be?? Funny part was, I wanted this guppy to bread with my other guppies (it had neat colors)- at the end of the day, I would have ended up donating more fish to the store once I had bunch of babies. smh read more
