Okay, a preface to my review before you hear about my experience. This place is a historic home in…read morehistoric downtown McKinney. It's absolutely beautiful, and makes amazing pictures for your wedding day. Nothing that I have to say is about how beautiful the location is, or any crazy hidden surprises (okay, maybe one) about the house. Please, look at the photos I posted from my own wedding to see how incredible this place looks and how well it photographs. Now, on to why it got three stars. When we first went (a year before our target wedding date) we were told that there were only 2 weekends left in the month of October and that it would cost x amount of dollars more (I can't remember the exact number) if we wanted an evening wedding because it was "in such high demand". We really loved the place, some friends of ours had been married there, so we swallowed the pill and moved on. Looking back, I really doubt it was that crowded seeing how easily they got us in for a rehearsal practice, I think we got ripped off. During the many many months up to the wedding they were so hard to get a hold of. They never answered their phone and sometimes it took two or three urgent voicemails before they would call us back. The woman who owns it convinced us we would need the extra hour added on to our package and when we didn't even remotely use it (finished earlier than the original time anyway) they wouldn't refund us even though THEY got to go home early because of it. Several things the actual week/day of the wedding. At our rehearsal we noticed that a strand of lights on the gazebo was out, we asked them to fix it and they didn't. The owner's mother is a florist and when we refused to use her because her prices were OUTRAGEOUS they retaliated (or so we believe) by leaving this horribly ugly bright orange/palm leaf floral arrangement on the top of the gazebo. Our colors were brown and blue, and she knew we were getting married later and left it up. It's now in all of our wedding pictures (see the example I posted) and honestly made putting our wedding album together a $@&!# because it was in EVERYTHING. We had to do a bunch of black and white photos because of it. I am still angry about it. As far as the weird surprise goes, their "bride's suite" is behind their laundry room and not very well appointed. We had to rent a hotel room so my party and I could get dressed because honestly, there is no where to sit down in there. Also, laundry room. Also, scary as hell doll-filled room right next to it. Like seriously, this is a lost scene from that weird 80's movie where dolls kill everyone. Also, the food we sampled at the tasting we went to was not what the food tasted like the night of my wedding. They cater their own weddings and the food at the tasting was pretty good, the night of it was disgusting. I really think they used left-over food from the wedding before because it was luke-warm like it had been under a heat lamp and flavorless. Luckily my cake was incredible and made up for it. They really made my wedding difficult to enjoy. They were not there to help us at all, and the women we hired to be "day of wedding helpers" were the only reason my party and I even got down the aisle. They were way overpriced for the terrible level of service they provided, and the terrible catering. Their only saving grace is the beauty of the house and the picturesque aspects of historic downtown McKinney.

The owners, Carol and Cheryl are awesome to work with and are available any time you need them for anything. The home is just beautiful and has a lot of character, which makes it exciting to decorate. We were able to go the night before the wedding and set the venue up. When we arrived after the wedding on Saturday the owners and their crew were busy as bees making sure the guests had everything they needed. The cakes they made were awesome and the food was delicious. The punch is exceptional and the chocolate fountain was a huge hit. The bride and groom were extremely pleased as were all the guests, and this grandmother was smiling. Everything was affordable and worth every penny.

The greenhouse-esque covering for the ceremony space turned out to be completely necessary for our wedding (because of course it rained for the first time in October on our wedding day). Our pictures looked wonderful and our photographer was so excited to shoot here. There are truly so many beautiful spots to capture every moment; you really get the best of everything.

I'd just gotten engaged two weeks prior, but told myself that I didn't need a wedding planner. Silly me. :) Fast forward to May, when I was just beginning to rip my hair out. My wedding location (both ceremony and reception) was held in a small town, with hardly any wedding-related resources. Thank goodness Wendy was available for our October date because I really don't know what I would've done without her. She's completely in-the-know and paired us with some incredibly amazing vendors that we would've never found on our own. Her personality and spirit is so warm and inviting that you end up wanting her to be your very best friend. She took each of my annoying emails and phone calls in stride, immediately going to work solving all of my problems (which, in the end, weren't really problems). Our wedding day went off without a hitch, as they say. Wendy and her team made sure that the entire day was perfect for us and our families and we are so, so happy that we chose to work with her!

It was a long year filled with crazy meetings and discussions about minutiae. Thanks to her patience and attention to detail, she made sure everything reflected what we wanted. Our family and friends were very impressed with the execution and won't stop talking about how it was the nicest wedding they ever attended, and we can't wait to see the professional photos that I just know will be amazing. We had a shuttle take us from the Downtown McKinney area to the venue and it was a short-ish ride through ranches and open spaces. Once we arrived, the venue was beautifully laid out. We walked through where the reception would be (an indoor and outdoor concept) and went to where the ceremony was held. The wedding was held in the afternoon at the perfect time where it wasn't too hot and had a nice breeze rolling through the trees. The space where the ceremony was in relation to where the reception was isn't too far of a walk and, although not heel friendly, it wasn't too bad. There are many great spots to take photos at and to also hangout in between the ceremony and reception. The staff working the event was super nice and helpful the whole night. The venue itself was such a beautiful space for such a special life event.

Walk back on the compressed gravel trail to the main building and the reception was on the huge covered porch. There were space heaters mounted up above and put out just the right amount of heat on a coolish but beautiful evening. Great lighting on the patio, room for the double sided buffet line, tables and chairs for the reception attendees and just the right amount of room for the DJ and dance floor. I'm not sure how many guests were in attendance but I would guess around 150 or so. The inside powder room was adorable, complete with a pull chain to flush. Outdoors in the patio were more bathrooms for the cowboys and cowgirls in attendance. The overall vibe was comfortable- rustic and romantic, like you were in a beautiful wooded private space. Close enough to the city, but so fun to drive in and see cows in the field right next to the entry road!

Before, Danielle would run back and forth to check on us while transforming our venue into a dreamscape. All I wanted to know was how my wife was doing. I knew she would look beautiful, just like she always does, but I wanted Danielle's confirmation. "She's doing well. She wants to see you. She's eating LIKE HOW YOU SHOULD BE EATING. Of course, she is beautiful." I think she was just as anxious and excited as we were to see each other. We felt so much love from Danielle and the crew. It was a perfect day. Our friends got married at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. This was my first time here…read more It was such a pretty wedding ceremony and reception. It seems like there are both multiple ceremony and reception areas within the venue. The ceremony was in the lay family garden, which has a nearby parking lot but is hidden between winding pathways, greenery, and water features. You don't get any sense that you're minutes away from the parking lot from the garden. The ceremony was in the Alex Camp House, which contrary to what it sounds like, is not indoors. The indoor area in the building is sectioned off into smaller rooms making it unsuitable for a reception. The reception is held out on the back patio and grounds immediately surrounding it. The Alex Camp House is walking distance from the lay family garden so that was nice for all the ladies in heels.

We planned our wedding from out of state and it was so much less stressful to work with a venue that manages many of the details (flatware, catering coordination, table decor, etc.). We opted to use them for floral and they were beautiful! Loved repurposing the aisle decor to tables too. Having a day of coordinator allowed me to enjoy my wedding day rather than work it! The staff is experienced and reliable. They have a process that streamlines planning and work with several vendors that will give you a special price and know the venue/team well enough to have a very smooth experience. The staff was kind and very attentive! The venue itself was cute. The main space was huge, and can easily fit a large corporate event/wedding/private event. There is also a large outside area for outdoor ceremonies or parties. Outside of the main building, there is a pond in between the building and the parking lot. There were lots of critters and frogs screaming in my ear during the evening when the sun set.
