You can do a loop around the mountain which I haven't done yet but it looks fairly flat with a bit of a slight incline on one side but does not go up the mountain so it would be nice for kids and dogs. There are a couple of trails going up to the peak. One looks more like loose dirt and is steeper while the one we took was also steep but more rock face and we thought it would be safer for our level. The climb up is steep but short and I did have to stop a few times to catch my breath for a second....and to take pictures of course. It took us 30 minutes to get to the peak and you get a beautiful view of the valley. It did get really steep, I was glad I wore my trail shoes. Although we did see a couple dogs I would not bring one as the jagged rocks have to be hurting their little paws. It's amazing though if you can make it early in the morning to see the sunrise. We got there around 6:30am and it seemed a little busy but once we came down everyone was gone and the parking lot was pretty empty so I'm guessing this is the place to go for a sunrise climb.....and it's so close, just a gem of Summerlin area.

The weather has been so beautiful this season so far. Not too cold or too hot. We had the mountain all to ourselves when we decided to hike on a Thursday morning last week when the sunrise was at 6:14am. It took us 24 minutes to get to the top. The first half of the hike is pretty steep and I am quickly reminded that I am not in the best of shape. I make sure to bring a hiking stick/cane to help when descending the mountain. Overall it is always worth it to hike to reap the beautiful view at the top of lone mountain.

I've hiked the Bonanza Trail twice and don't plan to do it again. It's a strenuous hike of about…read more10 miles round trip to the summit and back. To get to the trailhead, you have to drive US 95 north past the two roads that lead to Kyle and lee Canyons at Mount Charleston. You turn left where the sign says Cold Creek. The road goes between the two prisons along US 95. Drive west about 10 miles to the village of Cold Creek. The last section of the road is rough and it's best to have a high clearance vehicle. There is a parking area at the trailhead and a group camping area. From here, you go cross a meadow for about a half a mile to get to the first of many, many switchbacks. One website says there are 80 switchbacks. The elevation gain makes the hiking tough. Part way up the switchbacks, you'll come to an old burn area and you can see how the forest has tried to recover. None of the large trees are growing much and it will take a long time. After what seems an interminable hike, you reach the saddle. From the saddle, the trail heads south in the direction of Mount Charleston. The Bristlecone Trail in Lee Canyon is only 8 miles down the trail. As you start toward the limestone peak to the left of the trail, there is a small use trail that goes to the peak. If you get to the cairn in one of my photos, you've gone a little too far but you can get to the summit from there. From the saddle, as the trail heads south, find a spot where you can head to the left and get on top of the limestone cliffs. If you go left too soon, you'll have a climb up the cliffs. If you stay more to the right, you'll be able to get to the summit without any climbing. I used my GPS unit to find the summit. Once at the summit, it's time for a well deserved rest and a chance to enjoy the view. Find the ammo box and sign the register. There is cell phone coverage for almost the entire hike so doing it alone is not a problem. After your rest, retrace your steps. This is a different trail for another reason. It's one of the few trails I hike in the Spring Mountains that you can see the parking lot for a good part of the hike. That's interesting but not essential information. I would not recommend this hike on a windy day. The winds at the summit can be fierce and you'll be fighting your way up the mountain. If you do this hike, take plenty of water, wear good hiking boots, and a GPS unit for finding the summit is always a good idea. Happy hiking!

You are almost guaranteed to see wild horses every time you drive up the road to Cold Creek, so be careful, drive slow and let them pass. This is great hike to get in shape for Mt. Charleston Peak or any other peaks around there. It will def put you in check. It's all trail, well maintained, there are a few spot where you will need to climb over a tree stump that hasn't been cleared off my Forest Service just yet, but it's all Class I trail, no scrambling at all. There are 80 switchbacks, yes 80, although the elevation club is only 3000 feet of elevation climb, you definitely feel your heart beating and your lungs doing double time in certain areas. This trail is easy to follow, you will reach a false peak about halfway to the top, and about a third of the way to the top, when you reach your very first DOWNWARD switchback, do not follow the trail, look up towards your left, you will see a cairn, that is the trail you need to follow. This other trail will take you all the way to Lee Canyon, which is another 10 miles. Once you are at the peak, you have a great view of Mt. Charleston Peak, you can see down into Pahrump, and to the East you can see to the other side of the I-15. I've done this hike twice, I don't plan on doing it again. My hamstring tendon was killing me for about two weeks after due to the 80 switchbacks downhill. Quick stats 10 miles RT 3000 feet elevation gain Strenuous Bring 2-3 L of water Sunscreen, even though it's usually 20 degrees cooler than Vegas, and it's mostly a shaded trail, the sun is still hitting you on most of the trail. Bring a lightweight windbreaker, it can get windy at the peak. PS. The last mile or so of the road that leads up to the trailhead is not paved and very rocky, definitely not accessible with a low profile vehicle, If you don't have a 4 wheel drive or HCV, you can park and walk, it will just add a few miles to the hike.

We opted to do 2 miles out and 2 miles back instead of the loop and had a great time. The first mile or so is a steady gain in elevation, but I didn't bring hiking poles and they shouldn't be necessary unless you need them for balance. The trail is easy to follow so you can't really get lost. We only saw one other person when we were on our way to the turn-around point: solitude! What I noticed about this particular hike is how quiet it is there, which makes for a very peaceful trek. We made it down into the wash area and then turned around to go back the same way we came. I recommend this hike if you're looking for something less difficult, but still full of terrific Red Rock scenery. Plus, it's free--no entrance fees here!

This was my first hike at Kraft Mountain and it was a pretty awesome loop!…read more It took me about 1 hour and 30 minutes to do it even with running parts of it. It was a perfect day to hike it because it was overcast for most of the time and I think the temperature was about mid 70's which is extremely rare for June in Vegas. I'd say that the loop itself was easy but maybe that's for someone who walks, jogs and scrambles often. Maybe if you are a total newbie to any hiking or physical activity then maybe it won't be easy. The hike itself going uphill was easy but going down past all the grey rock heading towards the boulders can be tricky because scrambling is required. So get ready to slide down on your butt, cling onto some boulders and wedge yourself between a few hard places while scraping your skin or knees on hard surfaces and brush. I was wearing shorts and did fine and most importantly do carry some sugary snacks if you need a quick pick me up. Pack some gummies and at least a tiny bottle of water and also emergency sunscreen because even in overcast you will get burned by the desert sun. Overall this is a loop I highly recommend to anyone whose never tried it before. It's easy to follow, can't really get lost and there's always people on the trail so if you need help, almost sure you're not going to be alone. What a great little hike!…read more I took my two littles, ages 2 and 4 on this little paved hike. Since it is paved, a person can easily bring a stroller or wheelchair on it and during this hike, we saw plenty of them as it is a popular hike for families and groups due to the abundance of picnic tables you can use throughout the hike. The parking lot for the trailhead is on the opposite side of the street. The parking lot is one of the larger ones and there are bathrooms available there as well. Once you cross the street, you will then be on the paved path that walks parallel to the street for a good block or so and then it veers off, slightly downhill, into the forest. There are numbered picnic tables along the hike so it is super easy to bring snacks or lunch and have a picnic. I didn't see any trash cans so PLEASE be sure to pack up your trash and take it back to you. I saw plenty of wheeled coolers and ice chests so you could definitely pack one of those in as well. Mid-hike there were also little forts that have been built (which is fun for the kids - one even has a table inside) and another set of bathrooms. There is also a very small creek that runs along the path, When we were there it did start to rain very hard so we ended up staying on the paved path as the small creek was starting to get larger in size and we didn't have a change of shoes for the kids. Overall - a nice, easy hike for anyone in a wheelchair or stroller. You could pack a lunch and spend a good amount of your day there exploring and taking in the beautiful scenery.

So in Yelp, it appears that the Western Beltway Trail is either know to people as the "Western…read moreBeltway Trail" or the "Western Beltway Trail North." To those that have never stepped foot on it, know that they are the same thing. The Western Beltway Trail is an 11.5 mile biking, walking, jogging trail that hugs the I-215 Highway on the westside of Las Vegas in the general Summerin area. It begins at Tropicana/215 on the South end and ends at Alexander/215 on the North end. It is a safer option to those wanting to get away from cars and general traffic. If you are cycling northbound, it is a slow easy uphill and you are getting in some work. If you are cycling southbound, short the stretch from Alexander to Las Mead), it is pretty much all downhill or flat. For me to cycle from Tropicana to Alexander takes me (an in shape, average female cyclist) takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes. Supported by underpasses on some roads and bridges on others, crosswalks with walking light signals on everything else, it is a safe way for me to ride a bike. In light of heavily traffic busy roadways, a road to Red Rock Canyon on Charleston that only seems to get more congested with every passing year and on the heels of the tragic death of 5 cyclists late last year, I find the Western Beltway Trail a way to cycle, be safe, see mountains, get fresh air. With Las Vegas Cyclery located close by on the NE corner of Town Center Dr. & I-215 for bike support if needed, the path continues to grow on me. The beautiful Sagemont Park is located at Summerlin Centre Drive and the I-215 and is such a nice amenity to be located right along the path. Not to mention Downtown Summerlin that is so close as well. There are few trail maps actually located on the trail itself and those that are posted are usually about 12 feet in the air and written in the tiniest script possible, so don't plan on using those. Be careful at crosswalks and always be sure to only cross with the proper walk signal (cars are often not paying attention). Anyway, no trash receptacles or public bathrooms, but don't let that deter you from how useful, functional, safe and nice this trail is. I always think it could use a bit more greenery, for it is fully exposed to the sun along the entire route. I use this trail to cycle on my road bike more and more as time goes on. Traffic and cars on the road are only going to increase and lord knows when a proper trail off of West Charleston Road out to Red Rock will come to fruition. So in the meantime, I am glad this trail is here.

It is the home of the Arizona Ash, a tree that can reach up to fifty feet high. The presence of the Arizona Ash is an indicator that there is a permanent water supply beneath the surface. And the presence of the Arizona Ash is the indicator of a diversity of wildlife from burros that use the land in the shadow of the tree canopy as a watering hole to sapsuckers that hammer away at the tree. Most of all, the presence of the Arizona Ash is an indicator of an awesome hike. This is an awesome hike that seems to bring me back to the trail annually. Although the trail proper is 0.8 miles, there is slightly increased mileage walking the North and South Ash Loop Trails that incorporate the trail. With the exception of the trailhead it is unsigned. So I follow the North Ash Grove Loop at 0.3 miles and the South Ash Grove Loop at 1.4 miles. The best way to describe the trail is comparing it to a dumbell where the North Ash Loop is the loop closer to the trailhead, the South Ash Grove Loop is closer to Route 159, and the bar is the spine connecting the two. The Ash Grove Trail is the scenic southeast corner of Spring Mountain Ranch State Park in Red Rock Canyon. This park reminds me of the Magic Kingdom of Red Rock Canyon where the Ranch House is Sleeping Beauty's Castle and the hiking trails are the lands that originate from there. In this Red Rock Magic Kingdom the Ash Grove Land is in the southeast quadrant where Tomorrowland is in Disney Land. It is the first land that I visit whenever I hike in Spring Mountain Ranch. This is an easy trail. As a matter of fact, the North Loop is ADA accessible. The slightly challenging part is crossing Sandstone Wash. When I spend time here it is more about relaxing in nature than working out in nature. It is majestic Red Rock Canyon scenery with the uniqueness of ash groves. When I hike on the trail I am rewarded with postcard views of prickly pears, meadows, Cholla, Sandstone Wash, Arizona Ash, oak trees, Mount Wilson with the Red Rock escarpment, and annual wildflower blooms. My favorite vista is leaving the Sandstone Wash crossing toward a green nature field leading to an oasis of Arizona Ash canopy. My second favorite vista is the high up view of Sandstone Wash below. The canopy of Ash and still water create a New England scene in the desert. In the past I have shared this unique nature with burros. Complimenting my sense of sight is my olfactory sense of aromic plants. Thanks to the informative signs, my hikes in the Ash Grove have been learning experiences. Regardless that I am an avid hiker these signs have taught me neat facts. For example, "the prickly pear is one of the most common cacti and is found in 47 of the lower 48 states." "Say what!?" There are cacti in New England! Then there is the sign that says that due to the natural air conditioner affect of the Arizona Ash, it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler here. As a matter of fact it does feel cooler here. This makes a nice hike in June. The abundance of shade on the Loop segments also have an air conditioner affect. Disparate from the Loop segments, the spine segment is exposed to the sun. This segment is pure desert flora that parallels the Sandstone Wash. This relax in nature hike is where I like to take breaks and sit in nature. The majority of the benches are in the North Ash Loop. There is the price of $10 admission into the park to spend time here. Gone are the days of the Nevada resident $3 discount. It is money well spent. With controlled access and cash flow into the park, I rate the Ash Grove high on trail condition. With the exception of a couple missing signs, minor etching in a couple more, the trail is in great condition. As I get older in age, spending time with nature in beautiful trails like the Ash Grove keeps me younger mentally. This is one of the reasons that I will return to the Ash Grove Land of Nature's Magic Kingdom in Red Rock Canyon.
