Loustic on a tiny street in the third arrondissement is a good place for a decent coffee at a pretty central location. Not more, not less. Loustic feels to me like a relatively French version of a hip coffee shop. It's a nice little place, but I made the capital error and asked for a flat white. I should have known better - as I was lectured, in France they don't do flat whites. So instead, I then asked for the piccolo that was listed on the menu - which is actually pretty similar to a flat white, just with less milk. And it looked like a small flat white, too. Thus I could hardly hide my smile when the barista walked over with my cup. The chocolate cookie I also had tasted nice and the staff were overall friendly, even though the "we don't do this" reply was kind of unnecessary in my opinion, as they sort of do it anyway. At least, this was perhaps the only time that any of the Parisians I met lived up to their reputation, so I should probably thank the barista for this authentic encounter with French culture... read more

Very comfortable neighborhood cafe in the Marais district. Wonderful selection of made to order "drip" (filtered) coffees. My choice from Costa Rica was simply delicious. Wifi available. The espresso was velvety-smooth, robust with a hint of natural sweetness. Channa, the gracious owner, remained open after closing hours to accommodate additional guests. Really torn about this review, but think this has to be said. Armed with a smartphone the beau and I found this lovely coffee shop our very first day in Paris. The espresso is delicious- seriously. Rivaling that of any boutique coffee shop in the states or San Francisco. We rarely drink coffee black (or in this case, cafe Americanos) but the espresso is incredible here, and it's easy to savor every sip. But as some have mentioned, the owner is incredibly irritable and elitist. The boyfriend ordered coffee to go, but wanted to wait a few minutes to people watch in which seconds he was directed to leave because,"that's not the culture here". Look, I get that in France there are some coffee/culture faux pas. Some things were easy to figure out right away (eg. No side half and half essentially anywhere, obvious due to lack of half and half canisters even at Starbucks. Also, no drip coffee because that's never on any coffee menus) but other things like don't take your coffee to go and have a few sips there, how would you have known that? There are nicer ways to try and educate people like..,"hey that's kind of unusual here- would you like to enjoy the coffee here instead? Id be happy to pour it in to a cup for you" is the kinder way to go about it. Considering the owner is actually British, I'm fairly certain he had the ability to go about that in a nicer way (let's be honest, niceties are hard in your 2nd, 3rd language. I could never be very polite in Chinese, for instance) but that's just not how he chose to go about it. I think I was particularly taken aback because my boyfriend is a ridiculously amiable guy, I've never seen anyone be rude to him. In fact I often make fun of him for becoming instant friends with everyone. Thank you sir, for the attitude. Sometimes people just don't know and aren't trying to offend anyone, in which case you can educate them without assuming they meant to be offensive. Even prefacing your statement with a "sorry" would suffice. But whatever- thank you for the first three lovely days in your coffee shop. Outside of him, we really enjoyed all the baristas we interacted with. They're all gorgeous too- if very pretty baristas are your thing ;). read more

Visiting Paris from Seattle, we stumbled upon this cafe with the help of Yelp. And came back every day of our vacation. Outstanding coffee, really delicious food -- try the granola with yogurt or banana bread -- and a charming place to take a break. The owner is very friendly and speaks English (he's from the UK). Paris is behind the curve when it comes to coffee culture, so cafes with high quality espresso are not nearly as common as they are in the U.S. or UK. Loustic stands out in Paris and is a great find. My other home-away-from-home. I came for the coffee, but stayed for the ambience. Couldn't ask for a more welcoming venue. It has come to be an ex-pat hub of sorts so I was never lacking for conversation. Have used Loustic, several times, for work meetings. The attention to detail is astounding. We went here recently with my girlfriend based on a review on a coffee app we downloaded before our trip to Paris - and undoubtedly the coffee is incredible! Service however was inefficient and cold and the entire time we were there, the manager was watching over his staff with no attempt made to help (and no acknowledgment to customers either). No menu was offered when we enquired about food but we were told there was a chicken sandwich available. This came hot in a very unusual pastry meets bread combo... and it was pretty awful. An odd Asian flavoured breaded chicken with carrots(!) which was super dry. Given the price (especially for the area-not easy to find!) I wouldn't recommend for lunch - save it for a really good coffee craving.... but don't go out of your way. read more

I loved this place. It was down the street from my air b n b and I had read about it in advance of my trip last week. The coffee is the best I had in Paris, the British owner, oh I LOVED this guy and the quiche was one of the best things I ate all week in Paris. Also of note I asked for a café Americano which wasn't exactly on the menu and only because I like my coffee ridiculously hot and the owner made it for me and another fantastic drink. Another major upside is that they are smart enough to offer you a decent cup if you want your coffee "a porte". Most cafes give you a plastic flimsy cup that isn't strong enough to hold up to the heat or the weight of a cup of coffee so really doesn't work. The café interior is old world Parisian charm. This place would have been my go to spot had it not been for the owner. The owner made the experience unpleasant and I would not come here again. As soon as we sat down the owner came over to make sure that we were going to order something. When the place got more busy he asked us to leave soon so that he could accommodate more people. We had already ordered food and my friend was still waiting on her order. If you don't want people to stay at your cafe then don't offer free wifi. When we leaving the owner stopped us to make sure that we paid. I have never in my life experienced a coffee shop that imposes a time limit on your stay. read more

Great coffee shop with super comfy benches and great coffee & chai. I've been here twice now and will probably return when i'm in the area but there are two strong negatives. 1-the first time I came was to study and after an hour of trying to log on to the wifi not only on my phone but also on my iPad I gave up. 2-both times I've been here I've felt rather uncomfortable because of the waitstaff which is strange since they're all (or at least mostly) British. Generally expats are nice to one another but here it doesn't seem to be the case. Its unfortunate because the location, decor, and coffee are great. read more

I would really give it 3.5 stars if that was an option. My cappuccino was a lot milkier than I expect it to be and there was almost no foam. We got the "biggest" breakfast plate, which consists of a croissant, juice, muesli in yogurt and hot drink. The food part was fine but I'd much prefer having the option of a fresh juice instead of this carbs full drink... It seems a bit pricey too. I need to be blunt about this place. Loustic has the BEST coffee I have ever had in my entire life. I've had a lot of other coffee in the states and abroad but Loustic is heads and shoulders above everyone else. The amazing staff will greet you in French when you walk in the door until you start speaking English discovering that the place is staffed with English people who were sent from God to make coffee. Get the expresso de la semaine, they have a different one every week and they're all amazing. Be warned! Their espresso is not for the feint of heart (or those sensitive to caffeine). It's so strong that it's almost as if you're drinking a double shot of liquor, but the flavor is unbelievable. Their amazing espresso also means that their other drinks (like the café crème) are just as amazing as well. The food that they have is very good as well. Even though it's not as fresh as a boulangerie down the street, they'll warm it up for you and it'll compliment your coffee perfectly. Also, a bunch of locals know about this place and it gets pretty full during the day, especially on the weekends, but it doesn't matter. Even if you can't get a seat right away, you can always get a coffee to go and take a stroll down Rue Beaubourg to see the Notre Dame with your amazing coffee. This place is a must have if visiting Paris. You'll never want to leave just because of this coffee (and Le Relais de L'Entrecote). I guarantee it. read more

Trendy non typical Parisian cafe. Coffee tables are hexagonal. The owner speaks English. It has a very warm and cozy atmosphere. :) loved it! I came here too often while I studied abroad in Paris, drank too many cafe filtres. And I am very happy about that. I frequented many neo-cafes that specialize in coffee but Loustic always had a home-y vibe, I felt like I wasn't intruding, I felt relaxed enough that I could write in my journal. The furniture is very comfy, my favorite were the chairs in the middle. I never had a problem with crowds but I would tend to go on weekdays. The cafe filtre was my favorite in town. The Chai is A+, pricey so I didn't get it often but when I did it was so worth it. It's one of those drinks that melt away all of the bad feelings. Staff was always friendly. I would always have the red head barista...I never knew his name...but he was so sweet. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to him on my last day so if you're reading this (I doubt) you were really cool!! Loustic will be one of my top spots I will return to when I eventually get back to Paris. It just gives a positive vibe no other cafe can give. read more

Really great coffee! We had iced coffee, quiche and a cookie. We came late in the afternoon so quiche was the only food option available. I wasn't blown away, but the Emporer Norton cookie compensated. I like filter/pour over style coffee from single origin roasts. Most coffee shops in Paris just do espresso drinks or only have espresso roasts even if they make American style coffee. I like medium roasts...That's why I came 30 minutes across town to go to this shop. The coffee tasted great...this could have been a 3 or 4 star review. However, the owner of the shop is a real prick and destroyed my experience. As said before "the owner is incredibly irritable and elitist" I asked for a small side of milk with my coffee. Many of the cafes I've gone to in Paris have done this without any issue...so I didn't see it as a cultural taboo. When I asked for the milk he went into a full rant. "this is not America! This is the cultural difference between us! A customer is not allowed to ask for milk with coffee! I make real coffee!..." on and on. I explained that the coffee didn't NEED milk, but that it was easier on my stomach if I had it with a drop...He came over and proceeded to pour nearly a pint of cold milk in my coffee and wouldn't stop when I told him to. Come here if you want to spend 10 euros and be treated like trash. read more

I visited Loustic because I am a student looking for good cafes to study at. This place got good reviews, so I decided to check it out. I will not be going back again. Here's why. This place is really small. If you want to grab a quick coffee, that works, but if you want to work and chat for a long period of time, you will have serious difficulty finding a spot, let alone a comfortable one for more than two people. Additionally, on weekends, no laptops are allowed. When I met up with my friend (who was drinking coffee) and I did not order a drink upon entering, one of the employees immediately approached me and brusquely demanded that I get a drink right then or get out. In his words, that's what public libraries are for. I completely understand that the place is too small for extra, non-paying bodies, but the reprimand was handled very poorly. The place lacked the work space for it to be worth trying another time. They will not be getting my business again. read more
