The first place my boyfriend and I stopped by in Paris for a snack. I got the hot chocolate and he got an espresso with a chocolate nutella muffin. The hot chocolate was AMAZING. No other hot chocolate on this entire trip could compare. Steamed milk with chocolate chunks melted into it and a little bit of cinnamon. Mmm.. I'm salivating just thinking of how good it is now! My boyfriend wasn't too big fan of the espresso, but he loved the nutella muffin! On a separate occasion, when we came (because I wanted more hot chocolate) my boyfriend got a chocolate croissant and a chocolate cookie (yes, chocolate overload). They were both just okay. Both times we wanted to try the sandwiches and more, but we never got there early enough to try everything we wanted to because they always sold out. It's a really cute cafe with a lot of cushy seating in the back, some seating in the middle (with some very confusing mirrors that made me think the place was huge!) and in the front of the store. Have been KICKED OUT of my seat TWICE (the two times i have been here) I ordered a drink to-go to take and study at the library, but decided to get a sandwich too before leaving. I sit down to eat my sandwich and the owner comes at me and asks me to leave?! Confused I asked why, specially since it was raining. He said since I ordered the coffee to-go I NEEDED to leave. I had to take my half eaten sandwich and coffee outside and eat standing in the RAIN. Decided to give him another chance. Came back months later to order the same thing FOR HERE. I sit and enjoy my meal while doing some work. Besides stalking around and forcing those around to keep getting drinks in a coarseful manner, he bangs on my table and says I need to move or share my table. Awesome coffee shop in Le Marais just a couple blocks away from the Arts et Métiers metro station. The establishment itself is situated along a narrow street with its storefront marked by a café sign so it can be easily located. Ambiance is warm and cozy with comfortable furniture throughout, making it the perfect place to lounge around while sipping on great cappuccino. Inside, however, is quite small and may feel claustrophobic especially when packed with guests. Being owned by a British person, this is one of the few places in the city where you don't have to speak French fluently in order to get superb customer service. With that being said, you can actually order a drink in English without being ignored/glared at by the staff. I also liked how the owner's very knowledgeable with anything that revolves around coffee so feel free to ask him questions. He's even open to recommend other cafés as he suggested for us to check out Coffee Collective during our stay in Copenhagen! As far as food is concerned, they offer pastries and sandwiches from various specialty shops throughout Paris. One particular dish we got to try was the chocolate tart from Broken Biscuits which went well with their cappuccino. Overall, Loustic is a great pit stop if you happen to be around the neighborhood and in need of an extra boost from caffeine or just want something delicious to snack on. This place is so amazing that I am actually writing this review as I sit here so that I don't forget anything! Super cute place, REALLY comfy seating, bigger than it first appears. No real outdoor seating, so you're out of luck if that's your thing. Now the important part: the coffee. AMAZING. Many of you may know that French coffee tends to be a disappointment, but this place is the best I've had, and I come to France frequently. (Okay so I don't usually drink coffee, I drink espresso, but it's close enough.) The thing that pushed this place to five stars for me was their cardamom pastry. It looks sort of like a morning bun but with almonds on top. It comes in cinnamon and cardamom, but being a cardamom fiend I chose cardamom and OH BOY was it worth it! I love cardamom and eat it so often that most things with cardamom don't even taste like it to me any more, but this tasted overwhelmingly of cardamom and it was amazing. That being said, since it is quite strong you might want to take that into consideration before ordering if you're not sure about it. Great place to go if you need to get some studying done or some office work done. There is free WiFi and plenty of Botique seating. The vibe is rustic-hipster (they have a lot of kookier patterns and plenty of old r&b music playing). Overall the coffee is GREAT. And the service is nice. They spoke English too! We stopped by for a quick cappuccino before meeting a friend. We ordered our drinks to go because when our friend arrived we were planning on leaving. Amazingly, the cafe owner took huge offense to us waiting with to-go cups in hand, saying it damaged the image of his shop. Honestly, the only thing damaging was the way in which he treats his customers. After such aggressive pestering we left early and met our friend en route. Loustic... how could I describe Loustic... The atmosphere is by far one of the coziest in Paris, with hospitality to match. It's a place you can relax and really have a nice coffee date with a friend, or go early before work and sit with a coffee and enjoy a break from the digital world with an article in a magazine. It's that local place where you can be a regular, and get away from the hustle bustle. I am a big fan of a classic espresso (there's sure has that punch) but recently went for a chai tea latte which was the best I've tasted in my life. The bottom has a spoon of maple syrup, and with a twirl you've got a chai tea latte with a burst of nomnom that is original and unforgettable. Channa is great with guests, and he knows his stuff. This café is all about coffee, and it his passion is revealed as if you've got a question, boy can he answer. He's got all the gear to make you a coffee you'll love. He is a first-rate barista. On the weekends it can get crowded and it is definitely a place I'd recommend for a date for two, but if you're not in a rush and can potentially wait a few you'll get your cozy sit down. It's nice to know of a place that's open early enough that I can go before work. Definitely one of my criteria when it comes to an espresso bar. I also love their carrot cake. Ok, I may be a bit biased because I know Channa, the "gerant," who I in fact met at a Yelp soirée last year, but I have been to Loustic twice now in the past week and have succombed to its charm! What can I say? Channa is a first-rate barista and you can tell by the gear in his espresso bar. Having lived in Paris for over 5 years (important detail, reader, tuck that away), I feel qualified to say that while this city is crushing it in some major ways: health care, socialism, and shared bikes, it is less crushing it and more applying half hearted disdainful pressure in other aspects, such as the weather, the quality of its weed and its coffee. If you haven't guessed yet, I'm from San Francisco where you don't get baller points for knowing good coffee and grass, just normal, run of the mill points for having the faculty of observation. So yesterday, while walking around the 3ème, struck by a now latent urge (crushed by 5 years of disappointment) to imbibe something in Paris other than warmed up brown water, and armed with a smartphone, I found Loustic. I could tell this place was supposed to serve Good Coffee because one of the reviewers mentioned a "flat white" and they were not talking about a caucasian person's derriere. Menu check at the door confirms this. They serve kale and soy milk, things that, like mustaches in 2009, were considered GROSS and in 2014 are spotted frequently when you're in the Marais. Looking around further confirmed the reviews, "cosy atmosphere" (obligatory exposed stone walls) - check, "industrial-chic" (modern wood chairs and designer lighting) - check, "attention to detail" - hella check, with all CAPS and a period between each letter. But don't take for my word for it. ACT 1 V and her inside voice walk up to the counter. The barista looks up expectantly. Barista (in French): What can I get you? V (in French): Could I get a latte with soy milk please? Grammar aside -- while I would normally order a soy latte in an anglophone country, soy does not exist as an adjective in french only as a noun hence the awkward phrasing. Barista: something in French V (in French): A latte of soy milk please. Barista (in English): A latte is milk, you can't have it with soy milk. V: What? Barista: Latte is a word that's been bastardized. It's a cafe latte. Inside voice: That's attention to detail, girl. V: Okay a cafe latte with soy milk and not milk. Barista: Do you want whipped cream in it? V: NO I DON'T WANT WHIPPED CREAM ON IT. Inner voice: Did he just ask you if you want whipped cream? Does HE think that YOU think that you're at starbucks? Barista: No, I said, it's a cafe creme. A cafe creme doesn't have whipped cream in it. V: Okay. Inside voice: WHUUUT is going on right now? Barista: You're in France now and I need to educate you. It's a cafe creme you can't order a latte here. It doesn't work. Inside: OH SNAP. Dr. Barista just told you that you need to work on your coffee degree, beyotch. Other aside -- Who are these adults a) ordering milk and b) calling milk Latte when they are not in Italy? V: Well thank you for educating me, that's very kind. Barista: Would you like that for here or to go? V: (thinking of the cigarette she needs right now): To go please. End Scene ACT 2 involves being part of the coffee documentary being filmed outside Loustic. But I'll save that for another yelp. The two experiences I had at this café were both pretty mediocre, which is a bummer because I had heard such good things. The first time I went with a group, which their back room accommodated nicely, but their food selection was oddly small, which the owner (?) attributed to the fact that they don't make their food on site, they have to wait for it to be delivered. So we had to make do with what they had (I remember we got some quiches and muffins, which were decent enough but nothing special). Second time I came on a saturday to do some studying, and when I asked if they had a wifi password, I was told they don't have wifi on weekends (bizarre because I've had friends work there with wifi on weekends). So since I had already ordered a drink, I decided I could still write a paper sans internet, but within 5 minutes of pulling out my computer, I was told that they don't allow computers on weekends. Pretty irritating, but at least the café noisette I ordered was delicious. (That's pretty much what the two stars are for.) If you're looking for a place to relax and chat with one or two friends, this is a cute and cozy place to go, but the unremarkable food and slightly rude service I've experienced are enough to ensure that I won't be returning. Although Loustic is small, I've never had a problem finding seating for one or two people. With the cozy couches in the back and great music selection, I believe that this is a perfect place to come to chat with a friend or to recharge after visiting the Pompidou! Fantastic coffee shop with quality coffee and service and a hip atmosphere! We stayed in the Le Marais neighborhood for a week and a local told us that Loustic was the best cafe around and we were not disappointed! We visited 4 times during our stay mostly due to the excellent service from the barista, Julian, and the quality cappuccinos he made. He also made an effort to get to know us and made us feel like we were regulars by the end of our stay. There are lots of different seating options--in the front small arm tables for one to two people, a nook with wicker chairs and stools, and a "larger" back room with tables for 4-6 people. It is a small cozy shop to say the least. Coffee drinks were well balanced and we also tried the chai tea latte which came in a very large glass and was the perfect blend of spices and rich milk. Pastry selection varied day to day and were always delicious and fresh. If I am ever in the area, I will definitely come back! Highly recommend it. read more

I'm originally from outside of San Francisco so I appreciate the good coffee and English-speaking baristas. Simply amazing! This is my first breakfast spot in Paris and already the food has not failed me. The pastries and yogurt was so fresh and not too sweet. The portion size was not overwhelming, but very appropriate for the price. The cardomon was my favorite pastry, giving a different flavor that just screamed freshly made! Great coffee by the British-Indian owner, Channa, though it can be a bit of a wait if a bunch of people come in at once. The pastries are good as well (though they come from around the corner, and can be had a bit cheaper there.) Channa is on a quest to bring the "cafe" culture to Paris, focusing on people sitting down and having coffee the slow way. He takes great pride in his coffee, and it's quite good.
