I had a mysterious clanging going on and it was IN my muffler! I've got a 2000 Celica GT-S and unfortunately Lou's doesn't carry a muffler for it so he had to order one. Dropped the car off in the morning and a special order muffler was fixed and ready by lunch while maintaining the resonator and exhaust pipe. Some custom work there at a reasonable price! I was referred to Lou's by Subaru because I needed a new catalytic converter. They took care of that work and did a few other things, including something to do with my oxygen sensor. I am still not sure why they did these other things, I guess they were related to the catalytic converter. However, a strange issue came up with the oxygen sensor and I kept getting check engine lights coming on. I have taken it back to Lou's several times so they could try various things. Unfortunately they were ultimately unable to provide a solution as I guess this is not really their realm of expertise, and they described it as a very rare issue.* The initial work done was done quickly and at a fair price, and each subsequent visit was covered by the warranty on the initial work. The staff at Lou's has always been very courteous and helpful to me. *Note - I know very little about the inner workings of cars. read more

Horrible customer service and incompetent and rude owner. Took our Tundra there for a new exhaust and they forgot to disconnect the battery and fried the electrical system. The owner tried to fix, could not and asked us to take it to someone he thought could fix it who in turn said he could not and it should go to the dealer for repair. I understand mistakes happen and we were fine running all over the place to get it fixed, but when it came time to pay Toyota he blew us off, turned into a jerk basically stonewalling us until we called for days. He was a complete jerk like we were the problem! Will never go there again and do not recommend this business. read more

If I could give six stars, I would. over Thanksgiving holiday, 2023, my daughter was in town from out of state. Her car was definitely leaking exhaust somewhere. Local Hyundai dealer could not get to it that day (understandable), but suggested Lou's. I called. They were closed for the day after Tgiving, but were in the shop doing paperwork and a personal project. He asked about my situation. Cutting to the chase, he got me in an hour later, got it up on lift and showed me what was going on, and had it fixed in less than an hour - on his day off. I'm sad to say I had a really negative experience at Lou's and as a result, can't see myself giving them any more business. Weird story, but here goes. On my way into their office to pick my car up after $1,300 of exhaust work, I stopped to put my mask on. To free up one of my hands, I placed an empty plastic shopping bag on the hood of the car parked next to me for about 5 seconds before removing it and continuing toward the office. As I'm walking, I hear a surly, "Could you not put your stuff on people's cars?" I turn around and see a man, presumably a Lou's employee, glowering at me. I ignore his confrontational tone/face, smile politely, and say, "Sure, they're off now. Sorry!" before continuing on my way. Again, from behind me, the man growls, "You could scratch someone's car like that, you know." I'm rolling my eyes at this point--there was clearly no harm done, but this guy doesn't want to let it go--and again reply politely, "Okay, thanks for the advice," and escape into the office as quickly as I can. Well that was unprofessional and uncomfortable, but it's done with now, right? Wrong. The same man enters the office and asks how he can help me. I say which car I'm picking up and for a second it seems like he's just going to ring me up like a sane human being, but no--he quickly starts in on me again for the crime of placing a featherweight plastic bag on the hood of a car--apparently his, which he's quite protective of. He proceeds to berate me throughout our entire transaction as I desperately try to mollify him and get out of there with my car. It was so uncomfortable and bizarre--I've honestly never been treated this way by any business or serviceperson is my life. At one point I had to interrupt his tirade to pay him the $1,300! It's like he wasn't interested in the transaction at all, just in picking a fight with me. Eventually his raised voice caused another employee to enter, and when I explained to the newcomer that this man was being extremely rude to me, he replied "Well, he's the boss." At this point I told them that if this is how the owner treats customers, then they'd just lost me as a customer, and exited the office--with the "boss" still berating me for my heinous crime as I left. Obviously this was a mortifying and stressful experience, but to make matters worse, now my car is making weird vibrating/grinding noises when I take sharp turns, and I don't feel like I can ask Lou's to take another look at it based on how I'll be treated by the owner. I'll likely end up having to pay another garage to check their work, and maybe even $1,300+ to do it all over again! I'm even wondering if the owner deliberately scared me off because he knew the work was shoddy and didn't want me asking for it to be fixed. What a nightmare. I hope someone out there can learn from my mistake: have serious work done by serious, reputable professionals. I may have saved $100 by going to Lou's, but I would gladly pay that to be treated with respect--and will likely end up paying much more than that to diagnose and fix whatever the problem is with their work. My 2010 Lexus ES 350 had gotten so loud it hurt my ears to drive it. Took it to Lou's Portland location today at 8:30 a.m. They showed me three places where the exhaust system had rusted through. You would be a fool to go anywhere else! I wanted a new exhaust for my truck and was looking for a specific sound. I first went to a local shop that specializes in offroad accessories. I was going to get it done there, but realized I'd never know what it was going to sound like until it was on. If I didn't like the sound at that point I'd be stuck. The young girl at that shop actually recommended I check out Lou's and I'm glad she did. Chris (the owner of Lou's) was great. I explained what I wanted and he took the time to temporarily set up different configurations until I got the sound I was looking for. During the install he was meticulous at making sure everything was perfect. I couldn't be happier with the end result and it was about half as much money as it would have been to buy a pre-made kit and have the first shop install it. On a side note I know a guy who is a master welder for over 30yrs. He was extremely impressed at Chris's welds. read more

So my local Honda dealer quoted me $2600-$3400 to "fix" my exhaust system on my Pilot that was getting a little loud. As busy as he is, Chris at Lou's had me bring it by first thing in the morning. 30 minutes and $80 later it was repaired, sounded great and I was on the road. Can't believe Honda was going to replace the entire exhaust system for what turned out to be a single rusted out coupling. The rest of the system is still in great shape. Basically same review as Aaron G. Called Chris at 12:30 pm on a weekday. He replaced three sections of pipe and charged me $100. I was out the door by 1:30 pm. On a different occasion I brought my minivan to Chris with an exhaust system hanging by the flexpipe only. He cut off the rusted, broken brackets and re-hung the exhaust and he didn't even charge me for the work. Chris and his team are the most honest, hard-working guys in the business. His prices are rock bottom, his work is top notch and he's a pleasure to do business with to boot. It's not possible for him to improve. Highest rating possible! read more

Horrible!!!! Talked to chris on a thurs. about replacing a rotted resonator , he suggested welding in a piece of pipe instead which was ok w/me . He said he could do it on sat. so we dropped it off fri night.( my daughter drove it from westbrook) Sat at 3:00 we hadn't heard back so i called, he said they were bringing it in shortly. Half hour later the phone rings and its some different guy telling me that they tore off the remainder of the exhaust while driving it into the shop, and to call chris on monday ( the pipe and mufflers were about a year old) Went to see chris on mon. morning he was immediately defensive and said that it wasnt his fault and the pipes must have dragging when I dropped it off. (not) .I reminded him that it had been driven there without a problem. He became IRATE and said it wasnt his problem and to get out of his shop and take the car too. I just got my exhaust done but so far I have to say five stars after examining the welds and listening to the sound before the muffler breaks itself in, it is an absolute beautiful thing that Chris has done, a pure work of art to my once mundane truck. The guy has 1 million things to do every day but he's courteous to every customer takes time to call you back even when you play phone tag with him etc. when you get there he'll put your truck up on the lift and go over exactly what you want done and he does it with style. sound is great and the final look is just how I had asked/imagined. He is helpful with tips to keep your exhaust system well maintained (treat the welds every once in a while) and will be honest with you regarding price and any other topic regarding you vehicle he may know about.
