Was at a diff shop earlier today for my van as it started making exhaust noise and I have a very long trip tomorrow: Guy tells me "there are 3 nuts missing from an area - must have rusted off - but that's not your problem as it's not leaking from there. Held my hand to it and felt no air, plus it would be all stained black from the exhaust if that's where the leak was. So I held up my ear funnel pole to check near the back - that's your leak - cat converter. Would cost 1200$ to fix it here, but we dont have the time or the parts to do that today. Suggest you take it to "Lou's" down the street - maybe they can weld something over the leak to get u fixed up today" So - I go to Lou's... they put the 3 rusted off nuts on, send me on my way. I brought in my 2010 Accord for a full catalytic converter swap after a local shop in Tewksbury states Lou's was the better shop for the job. Quoted 2100, no problem, guys seemed nice over the phone. Problem was the work done was unsatisfactory. I returned not 1, but 2 times after, begging that they take it for a drive as it was so loud when accelerating but they refused. Got excuses both times and seemed I upset the guys who did the work. I used it love this car but the noise now, each and every time I take it out, makes me want to get rid of it. I went to Hogan Tire in Beverly beca my muffler sounded very loud. They called about forty five minutes later with terrible news for me. My car was in need of an entire exhaust system from the engine to the tail pipe. They informed me it would cost around 2400 dollars. I told my son and he suggested I get a second opinio. He told me to go to Lou's in North Reading. The following week I did just that. The charming man in this humble building checked out my car and explained I needed 2 lengths of pipe and some flex. Even though I didn't call or make any appointment, I was greeted warmly by a man who knew exactly what the problem was and how to explain it to me so I understood. I was a walk-in yesterday solely based off of these reviews. I've had a hybrid Lexus for under 2 years and exhaust started being loud last week and then went full grumble. I can't believe I was waiting for Lexus to call back about my warranty and find any reason to not count this included and probably charge $800 (they never called back). They were booked out until Thursday but got me in if I could come in right at 8:00am when they opened on Monday. Great! Showed up and they got me right on the lift. Cut out a flange and gasket, welded in a flex pipe and sent me home with some advice. Great guys, speedy work and luckily this one wasn't a major repair. Very reasonable price too! I've become a "Raving Fan" of Lou's Custom Exhaust. I had heard a rattling for some time now and had used clamps to stop the heat shields from rattling any more, but the low growl that started last week needed professional help. I drove my 08 Mitsubishi Outlander in without an appointment and they fit me into their schedule for an inspection. They were honest, clear, professional and let me see what was causing the growl in the exhaust. Instead of just telling me what the issue was, they actually let me see. Wow! The short pipe between the engine and the pipe to the catalytic converter and muffler on my Jeep developed a rust hole, but access is tricky (and burning hot). I brought it in today, Josh put it on the lift immediately, I went next door to Walmart for 30 minutes, and when I returned the car was ready and purred instead of roared. As always, Josh was nice (as were the other two men there), friendly, professional, with a good sense of humor, and the work was quick and affordable. From what I've seen, if you're a woman (I'm a man) they treat you respectfully and straightforwardly. If you're staying while they work on your car, there's a waiting room. read more

Somehow my exhaust ended up in two pieces, and was in a panic until a coworker recommended this place. Two other coworkers backed it up. I called and they were able to see me a few hours later, got my exhaust put back together in like 20 minutes, charged me less than what I expected, and were super friendly and courteous! YES! So relieved and happy with Lou's Custom Exhaust in NORTH READING. We had no appointment. The young man who helped us was professional and took care of us immediately. We had been quoted $800 (after haggling) from Midas in Stoneham (!!!!) for a catalytic converter replacement. They were quite upset when we didn't 'go for it'. I asked my son what to do and he told us about Lou's in North Reading. Lou's quoted us $300 and they replaced the part while we waited. We are so thrilled and pleased. We didn't get fleeced which Midas was quite willing to do to us. Evidently we have a stainless steel exhaust system (2004 Honda Civic) and the system was all fine except for the converter which was rotted out. PLEASE be careful and get a price from Lou's before you get 'hosed'. This is a 'custom' shop and they are honest and forthright. I found out about Lou's through the hot rod community back when I had a Corvette. Lou's did an outstanding job installing a custom exhaust and headers in my vintage car. But Lou's does more than just custom exhausts. Just now my daughter had an issue with her 2011 Nissan Versa. Apparently, they're prone to having a pipe that's connected to the muffler rot out. Bravo to Nissan for engineering something that is guaranteed to fail so they can get you into the stealership to take more of your hard earned $$ Not at Lou's! Their knowledge and craftsmanship is top notch! They immediately knew of my issue, removed and welded in a new pipe for $90! Shops like this are rare, old school...don't look for a comfy waiting room it's not here. What is here?....The BEST exhaust guys in the business, who are fair and honest. Used Lou's recently for a 98 Beetle. They were creative with the repair. They don't just replace parts because it's easy (and costly when it comes to VW). Lou's created a custom repair of a double flex pipe. I looked around for additional quotes. Major chain wanted $1300, another competitor wanted $750 for similar repair.
