It doesn't take much to keep me happy at the barbershop. Ideally, I would like to walk in without an appointment and get straight into the cutting. The barber can be a little chatty without overbearing or boring, and the price should be correlated to time. So, being new, I searched Yelp for a suitable barber in the area. Slim pickings, and even fewer reviews. Louis' seemed do-able, and its in the court yard at the Lafayett Center. I walked straight into a seat and Sonya started her magic. The cut was fine, she wasn't boring, and worked nice and fast. The $30 price tag was steep, but she did give me a hot foamy lather to do the back of my neck. Thank you Yelp! Through my search on Yelp, I found this barber shop, which was pretty close to my workplace. Based on the previous comments I had read, I called and booked an appointment with Sonja. She is a very straight forward person, gets right down to the business of cutting your hair and mixes in some pleasant small talk. The haircut itself is a bargain for the quality and location. While I am not opposed to paying $50+ for a good haircut, why do so when you can get it for under $30! I prefer a traditional barber shop to the ones that smell like perm you can find at the mall. I also feel lucky that I landed in Achilleas' chair. This is a traditional barber shop in the business district of DC not too far from Dupont Circle and George Washington University. They don't take credit cards but the reason they don't, is so that they don't have to jack up the price to accommodate the percentage the credit card companies charge businesses. Never. This place refused me service on the grounds of gender. I have a "men's" cut. I needed a shapeup quickly before entering the office this morning, and was met by two men who just kept shaking their heads at me saying, "We don't serve women here." This is no joke. I kept trying to get just a word in; tried to show them my cut and the back of my head. I wanted exactly what the men in the chairs wanted. I am currently filing a discrimination claim with the Better Business Bureau. They said 'NO' to the wrong person. read more

The best cut that I've ever received! The only hang up I had about the shop (and me being new to DC did not help) was that I could not find it very easily. When I did locate Louis' I opened the door and the only barber available immediately got to his feet, let me hang my coat up in the closet, and promptly seated me and prepped me for my hair cut. Not knowing exactly what I wanted, I asked the barber for about an inch and a half off and a clean up around the neck. He did exactly that, and then some. I could easily tell he was confident with every cut he made and the touch up around the neck and sideburns was done with a strait edge razor; it was wonderful. The hair cut was done with meticulous detail, but the cut did not take an excessive amount of time. Louis' Barber Shop is definitely a gentleman's barber shop. I was easily the youngest person in the room only being 19, but I got a professional looking haircut that left me feeling refreshed and confident. My best haircuts have been when I keep my two cents out of it and just let him go to work, because after all, he's the pro. And he is a total pro. Well, apparently the good old boys still exist in D.C. I am a woman and I have a buzz cut on one side of my head. I needed a trim only on the buzzed portion and was turned away saying they don't offer services to women. They cited the department of health as the reason but I've looked and see no such regulation. I have made an appointment for a haircut and beard trim at Louis' Barber shop last week. The blade that the barber used on my face seemed dull and old. As soon as he started, he cut my face in two spots on top of my mustache and once under the left sideburn. The comb he used on my hair was sitting inside the sink. He just picked it up and used it on my hair. None of the items he used were sitting inside a disinfectant solution. I had to go back to my hotel to fix my mustache and finish shaving my beard. He left several areas unshaven probably because he was afraid he would cause more cuts with his dull blade. My mustache was uneven and needed to be re-trimmed. However, he still asked for $60.00. This place is not hygienic and should be avoided. They cannot trim beards despite the high cost. read more

I've been going to Louis' for about 6 months now and have nothing but good things to say about it. I've gone from a progression of the local barber shop when I was a kid, to Hair Cuttery as a teen and young adult, to Bubbles as a late 20's and now back to a barbershop (Louis') as an early 30-something. I've never been able to get a good haircut the entire time until now. Achilleas is very personable and does an excellent job cutting my hair. Unfortunately, I only knew about this place for the past 6 months, however, I've had about 1 haircut a month from there now and would keep going back if I could. The one thing I will miss in the DC area is getting a good haircut. I'm going to have to go through the painful process of finding another great barbershop when I move to Minneapolis. I enjoy Louis' and the work Achilleas does so much that I will end up getting my haircut whenever I return to DC for visits. If you're on the fence - ignore the bad review(s) and give it a shot. Moved up to DC about six weeks ago and was in need of a new barbershop. As an intern, I went to barber shops near the Hill and Georgetown for the last two summers, both of which left something to be desired. Now that I live near Dupont, I wanted one much closer and started reading Yelp reviews of places. Louis' shop stood out and I gave it a shot. It was great. Achilleas cut my hair and he and I were talking shop the entire time. Basketball, travel, etc.--he could stimulate and hold a conversation regardless of what it was about. The shop is intimate (3 chairs, room for 2-3 more people to wait), service was fast, and hair cut looks great. I was in and out in about 30 minutes which is perfect. I know some people say that the cost ($30) is a bit excessive. Relative to other barber shops, that's probably a fair comment in regard to the cut itself. There are plenty of places in DC where a man can get a cut for $20-$22. If you want more of a traditional barber shop experience in or around Dupont/the Golden Triangle, though, this is the spot! read more

Demetris, the owner, has been cutting my hair for over 40 years - since he first came to the US. Over the years I've had to get hair cuts elsewhere because of transfers and/or travel, but have not gotten the quality haircut that Demetris does, even compared to some of the best international hotel shops/salons. I always looked forward to getting back to DC so that Demetris could repair those bad cuts. There are many long time regulars who continue to get their hair cut by Demetris. The first time I walked into this place, they seemed annoyed that I was there because it was 15 minutes to closing time and I guess they wanted to cut out early. The cut was ok, but the attitude was off-putting. The cost seemed ridiculous ($27 + tip) given other barber shops in the city like Camillo's in Tenley. I decided I would never go there again. Circumstances forced me to return 6 months later, and the experience was even worse. The guy cutting my hair clearly had no idea how to cut hair, and kept stopping in the middle to ask the other barbers what to do. It ended up taking him a half an hour to finish the cut, and the result was terrible. To make matters worse, the barber working the chair next to mine would not shut up about his political views. Given the cost of this place, you could easily go to another barber shop for much less, or even a decent salon for the same price. I will NEVER return to this place again. I notice that other reviewers keep mentioning the hot sideburn/nape shave as if this is some wonderful addition. She was very nice and tried to do what I wanted, but all of a sudden kept cutting off my hair shorter and shorter. I think it might have been a language issue and then I find out its 35 dollars at a bar shop, if it had wanted a buzz cut I would have paid a lot less. I've been going to Louis Barber shop for 5 years. Demetris, the owner, is the most experienced and most personable of the barbers there. I always go to him so I can't speak to the others. The walls are adorned with various presidents and other politicians whose hair Demetris cuts. I've run into Leon Panetta and other less recognizable Washington figures there over the years. It's definitely more expensive than SuperCuts and the like, but I think that's mostly due to the overhead of being in the heart of the K-Street corridor. I think it's worth it for the experience, professionalism and talent of Demetris. read more

Achilles has been cutting my hair for at least 5 years. I feel lucky to have found him as so many other local places are incompetent. I always get a great haircut from Achilles. I really like the added touches such as shaving the back of your neck and sideburns so you walk out in top form. He is a young guy but knows what he is doing. He is always professional, punctual, without attitude and chill, easy to deal with, following instructions and making it a relaxing experience. How many barbers hand you slips of paper with their vacation dates written out so you can plan accordingly? The prices are comparable to others but the service is far superior. read more
