This hotel has 58 rooms, restaurant & bar, full spa facilities, and can accommodate small groups or up to 700 people for conferences'. Well things have certainly turned around in 2022. This evening was the finale of the 2022 Farrell Clan Rally. And the hotel staff did their part for this excellent event. This was a five hour affair for 100 people & the band. Speeches, toasts. presentations, dinner, & music were the order of the evening. Dinner was three starters: beet salad, bacon & cheddar croquette, and my personal favorite - king prawn & chorizo risotto. Food choices in Ireland have made a quantum leap since our first visit here in 2006. Innovative and eclectic. Then came a good vegetable soup. Main course choices were: chicken bacon croquettes w/ chasseur sauce, roast sirloin of beef w/ gravy, and broiled Irish hake w/ chive veloute. Served w/ mashed & roasted potatoes, & steamed vegetables. Every dish was delivered to the tables correctly, hot, & delicious. Again a great job by the staff. Dessert was a choice of apple crumble & ice cream. Sherry trifle w/ cream, & toffee pudding w/ ice cream. Note: we were here just for this event so no hotel room review. Town centre location means there are lots of alternative places to eat and drink, you are not just reliant on the hotel bar and food - which is good anyway. Also very good from a price point of view, particularly with low sterling v euro! Free wifi throughout the hotel for laptop / iphone users.

I spoke to Tony the owner regarding this, and he's looking into improving them. If you're looking for a well organised B&B, where all is arranged for you, than this is not the place for you. With a very welcoming and relaxed way about it, it's simplicity and non complexity of the place, this is a great place for an uncomplicated stay.

You can also order a less posh dinner (and drinks!) in the bar area, called the Drawing Room. All the food here tasted fresh, was presented beautifully, and the menu was diverse. Our room was phenomenal, complete with decor that complimented the castle's history with modern conveniences like a huge bathtub, heated towel rack, locked safe, and TV/wifi (though we didn't spend a ton of time on electronics because sheesh look outside the window). The estate is GORGEOUS, with a beautiful lake, some ruins of the original abbey nearby and plenty of places inside the castle to explore. It has been thoughtfully renovated to feature period artwork and decor throughout the castle. Most of all I enjoyed the very accommodating staff, who were happy to meet our every need but were "in the shadows" enough for us to explore at our leisure, drinks in hand, and take in all the beauty this place had to offer.

Attitude from restaurant manager was quite standoffish and that was the standard. Probably should state on menu or train staff so they know to tell customers in advance of ordering. Then staff kept a wide birth from us for rest of meal unless bringing dishes. To top it off the wrong main course was brought and I couldn't get anyone's attention to confirm so to be honest just ate it as didnt want to have any more interactions with manager. Room was nice with 2 exceptions exposed electrical wires in bathrooms and wallpaper coming of wall under the window. Easy fixes to my mind that should have been taken care off.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was perfect…read more Check in was a breeze..we just went up to the gentleman at the desk, gave him our name, and he handed us the key to our room. It took, maybe, three minutes. He also confirmed our dinner reservations for the evening. In the lobby (which was more like a grand hall), they had a lovely array of complimentary coffee, teas, and pastries...all served with beautiful bone china. The castle is absolutely stunning both inside and out. The interiors are grand, and the grounds are just beautiful. We spent several hours walking around the park-like setting, and had drinks on the terrace overlooking the garden. Fantastic. We also walked through every inch of the interior's public rooms...don't miss the church! The entrance to our room was tucked away under a staircase. When I first saw it I thought, "Oh no, this room is going to be the size of a closet". When we went in we were taken aback. It was massive, with a very comfortable bed, sitting area, bathroom and a huge jetted tub. And it was clean as a pin, too. Dinner in the castle's opulent Dining Room was exemplary. Service was friendly and good-humored, and the food was very, very good. My wife had the salmon and I had the beef; both were perfect. We did the 3 course meal for 65 euros each, and feel it was worth every penny. Breakfast the next morning was just as good. It was also in the Dining Room, and was included in the rate we paid. Hot food was ordered off the menu, and cool food (cereals, fruit, cold meats, etc.) were offered buffet style. One last thing: as opulent, grand, and over-the-top as Markree Castle is, the one thing it wasn't was pretentious. You don't have to break out your tux, or sequined cocktail dress; as long as you don't look like you just rolled out of bed, you should be fine. At dinner I wore a white dress shirt and a nice pair of green jeans; I felt perfectly comfortable. Out of the 12 nights we spent in Ireland, this was our favorite we stayed. It's more than just a bed to put your head on; it's an experience, and an amazing one at that.

The drive into Markree Castle is a bit Agatha Christie, especially in torrential rain. Once you're there though, it's the perfect place to disappear to for a few days of relaxation. We stayed at the apartments on the estate, in a converted stables. They were really nicely set up, very comfortable. These are pet-friendly too, so our dog was able to join us for the trip. It was great to just be able to take her for a walk around the estate. Location wise, there's a lot to do for outdoorsy types. A couple of loughs and bogs are good for hikers, and a few nice pubs in nearby Coolooney.

My wife was responsible for planning a mid-winter week long holiday in Ireland. On the way to the West Coast after a couple of wet windy days in Dublin we stopped at Newgrange and then hurried to Longford for a late dinner before the VM restaurant closed on Sunday. We were warmly greeted by the owners Beryl and James Karney and shown to our room which was large and decorated with period furniture. The room faced the gardens in the rear of the main house and had a small loft sitting room above the bathroom. We dropped off our luggage and proceeded to our meal at VM. The restaurant is housed in a meticulously restored stone building which at one time had been the stables for the manor house. I will consider the food in another review however it was one of the most delicious meals we had in Ireland. We retired to the room and slept soundly. Upon waking Beryl Karney prepared and served a wonderful compete Irish breakfast. We found we were the only people staying overnight so we had some time to talk about the process and commitment needed to restore and maintain a 400 year old property. It was obvious how committed the Karneys are to make Viewmount a first class destination.

We were shown through to our window table. Fabulous views of the lake at sunset. Just breathtaking. To the food. We shared the seafood platter. My favourite had to be the prawns Marie rose (retro I know but still a firm favourite) For my main I ordered striploin steak with sweet potato fries and Bearnaise sauce. The fries were served in a cute little pail. The steak was well seasoned and cooked how I like it. For dessert I chose the chocolate tasting plate. I loved the cookie and cream ice-cream. The following morning we chose to have breakfast in our room. I went for the Irish breakfast with pink grapefruit juice and coffee. Great coffee and loved the black pudding. Last time we were here was almost 10 years ago. It was far more expensive then from what I remember. Sorry I left it so long. Definitely won't leave it as long next time!! Didn't try hiring a BMW bike or their hot tubs. That's for next time :)

The venue was very well appointed with great roaring fires - our evening meal was fantastic (beef fillet was melt-in-your-mouth). Only downside was the wedding coordinator who had a power trip ringing the dinner bell with an over-aggressive right hand throughout the day. We are there to attend a wedding, not to be herded like cattle! A fork against a champagne flute works just as well.

Before courses we received a delicious vegetable base soup and a bread basket with red onion focaccia, Brown Guinness, Cheese twist & Brown wheaten bread. They were all delicious, but we particularly loved the red onion focaccia. Dinner is a set three course menu so we ordered Starters: warm, crusted, brie with walnuts and baby beetroot, pear. Also ordered the scallop starter, which was a stuffed ravioli with a prawn bisque Mains: Seabass and the lamb. The Seabass was pan fried with red pepper, chive and lime and an Olive oil dressing. The lamb was a rack that was herb crusted with fondant potato, mint & pea jus. Desserts: tiramisu and warm rice pudding The highlights for us were the starters and probably the best tiramisu I've ever had ever! The mains were good, but just not as flavorful as the rest of the courses. Really loved the unexpected soup course and bread course. Definitely on the very pricey side so would only splurge for special occasions. Plenty of parking and handicap accessible with no steps.- at least I don't remember any.
