This hotel has 58 rooms, restaurant & bar, full spa facilities, and can accommodate small groups or up to 700 people for conferences'. Well things have certainly turned around in 2022. This evening was the finale of the 2022 Farrell Clan Rally. And the hotel staff did their part for this excellent event. This was a five hour affair for 100 people & the band. Speeches, toasts. presentations, dinner, & music were the order of the evening. Dinner was three starters: beet salad, bacon & cheddar croquette, and my personal favorite - king prawn & chorizo risotto. Food choices in Ireland have made a quantum leap since our first visit here in 2006. Innovative and eclectic. Then came a good vegetable soup. Main course choices were: chicken bacon croquettes w/ chasseur sauce, roast sirloin of beef w/ gravy, and broiled Irish hake w/ chive veloute. Served w/ mashed & roasted potatoes, & steamed vegetables. Every dish was delivered to the tables correctly, hot, & delicious. Again a great job by the staff. Dessert was a choice of apple crumble & ice cream. Sherry trifle w/ cream, & toffee pudding w/ ice cream. Note: we were here just for this event so no hotel room review. Town centre location means there are lots of alternative places to eat and drink, you are not just reliant on the hotel bar and food - which is good anyway. Recently stayed overnight at Cooney's Hotel, on the main street in Ballymahon, Co Longford - along…read morewith a group of about 15 other hardy walkers who were on the last stint of walking the Royal Canal from Dublin to Clondara Co Longford! We were all more than happy with the reception we got in Cooney's and what a deal - €55 per person for B & B and dinner. The rooms were amazingly large, well furnished, including a double plus a single bed in each room, sparkling white bed linen, TV, free wifi, the works! Really warm and cosy, but would only deduct points for waste of energy as the heating was left on all night and we couldn't turn off the radiator so had to leave a window open - when we reported this to reception the reply was that the 'weather was too cold to turn off the heating'! After a 19 km walk, a lovely warm soothing bath, we all enjoyed a wonderful old-fashioned Irish type dinner in the dining room (we were the only people dining that Monday night - although there appeared to be quite a few eating in the bar) - plenty on each course to choose from the owner/manager even gave us wine at a special price of €15 per bottle so who could argue with that! Breakfast the next morning had to be seen to be believed for a hotel that you would probably pass by it is so ordinary looking in the heart of the country!!.....what a choice and again several courses, ranging from a whole array of cereals, yogurts, porridge served with honey, cinnamon and cream, full and mini cooked breakfast, different types of eggs - I choose scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and did not expect to get such a huge separate serving of smoked salmon - but it did set me up for the day and the 14 km walk along the Royal Canal to our finishing spot where the Canal meets the Shannon at Clondara. If you are on your way to the West of Ireland and feel like a Midlands stop over or better again, spend a few days walking the Royal Canal around that area - drop into Cooneys and treat yourself to B & B and the evening meal!

Lough Rynn…read moreCastle AKA that place where Brian O'Driscoll got married is a series of period buildings in a secluded estate which is conventiently not too far off the N4. While it can be lovely to stay in historic buildings there are also downsides. The original castle is not a very large building and so the hotel's 43 rooms are spread throughout a number of buildings, some of which are connected by corridors and some are not. There is, as yet, no pool, leisure centre or spa in the hotel, so services are limited. That is certainly not reflected in the price which was 175 for a regular room for one night. The rooms themselves are a lovely mix of old style and modernity, but there are some little things that might get on your wick. Our room was unconnected to the main hotel, which is contrary to what my friend was told when she booked the room. The was an electricity box in our room with elicted quite a loud hum, and our room looked out on the beautiful view of a building site (which will presumably be a pool some day)! The function room was in a modern building which is quite unobtrusive, but is a bit of a walk from the reception and lounge areas at the front of the hotel (although that probably depends on how high your heels are and how much you've had to drink/need to pee!). Pluses had to be the service, the food and the grounds. All of the serice staff were super friendly and accomodating. We were checking in for a wedding and had come straight from the church. The guy showing us to our room took pity on us in our high heels and drove us the 50 metres in a golf buggy! He even offered to let my friend drive after she expressed as her fervent wish - she chickened out unfortunately! The food is really good and both the dinner and the breakfast were excellent. If you have time take a walk in the beautiful walled gardens and take in the views of the lakes. There's also a nature trail which I didn't venture on due to lack of suitable shoes. A lovely place but a bit overpriced.

The rooms, themselves, may accommodate 1-5 people with either one, two, or three beds per room. Bright, clean rooms with large windows and warm, cozy comforters. Bathrooms are clean and sinks are located outside the bathrooms. Daily room cleanings as well! Tip: open the cabinet and youll find a hairdryer so you dont need to bust out your converter if you need to dry your hair. Free wifi but certain locations in the guesthouse are more glitchy than others. Breakfast here hits the spot. Choices between a full irish breakfast (comprising of sausage, eggs, ham, pancakes, white and black pudding plus tomatoes with beans/mushrooms) or poached eggs on test or scrambled eggs on toast. Theres a spread placed out with cereals, granola, fruits, yogurt and juices. Coffee or tea? Probably my favorite question of the morning. Ive drank an average of 3 cups of coffee per morning. Strong and delicious! I dont think you can go wrong with this place. We were well taken care of and received such great hospitality. If in the area, i definitely recommend checking it out! Also, pronounced "Ashley" like the name. Been pronouncing it wrong til the end of the trip. Oops.

As much as we wanted to leave, we had no other choice but to stay since every hotel at Carrick-on-Shannon was already booked for the weekend. Despite of the circumstances, we actually have come to love the accommodations being offered. In fact, we couldn't be anymore happier for this bed and breakfast to be our first especially due to how Charlotte and her husband treated us throughout our stay. The rooms were quite clean with really comfortable beds. One big plus was the private bathroom with plenty hot water to go around. Found it a little weird, however, to have the sink situated right outside the bathroom. There's also television and free Wi-Fi to keep everyone entertained. Best part of staying here: breakfast!! This is one of those few moments when I couldn't wait till the next day just to have a full Irish brekkie. Haven't eaten much black and white puddings before but I found the ones from here far better than what I had in restaurants around Dublin. They also have a buffet of fresh fruits, yogurt and granola for those wanting to start out their day with a lighter meal. Overall, Aisleigh (pronounced as "Ashley") Guest House is one of the better establishments in Co. Leitrim that provides both housing and breakfast. I'd definitely stay here again over other hotels around the area.

When you get to my age, even stopping in a place called Strokestown can be a bit disconcerting…read more Strokestown itself is more rundown than up and coming despite it having the second widest street in Ireland at 44.5 metres, being one of the very few planned Irish towns (formally aligned streets and prominent public buildings) and a designated Heritage town. Typical of dodgy politicians mind, who talk the talk but only stick their grubby hands in other peoples' pockets to take care of themselves alone. The cash starved town is home to Strokestown Park House an 18th-century mansion which is home to Iteland's National Famine Museum. We turned into this hotel, named after Percy French an Irish polymath - Irish songwriter, author, poet, entertainer and painter. He was born not very far from the hotel but there's no evidence of any actual connection with it. We stopped for tea and scones. The deal was five star but the fruit scone itself just about three star. It can be made much better using stone cold butter, stone cold full fat milk no margarine or other vegetable oil. Cute cosy hotel. Lots of free parking. Good WiFi and friendly staff. Worth a stop and catch a walk around a neglect town.
