An exceptional experience from start to finish! Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was perfect…read more Check in was a breeze..we just went up to the gentleman at the desk, gave him our name, and he handed us the key to our room. It took, maybe, three minutes. He also confirmed our dinner reservations for the evening. In the lobby (which was more like a grand hall), they had a lovely array of complimentary coffee, teas, and pastries...all served with beautiful bone china. The castle is absolutely stunning both inside and out. The interiors are grand, and the grounds are just beautiful. We spent several hours walking around the park-like setting, and had drinks on the terrace overlooking the garden. Fantastic. We also walked through every inch of the interior's public rooms...don't miss the church! The entrance to our room was tucked away under a staircase. When I first saw it I thought, "Oh no, this room is going to be the size of a closet". When we went in we were taken aback. It was massive, with a very comfortable bed, sitting area, bathroom and a huge jetted tub. And it was clean as a pin, too. Dinner in the castle's opulent Dining Room was exemplary. Service was friendly and good-humored, and the food was very, very good. My wife had the salmon and I had the beef; both were perfect. We did the 3 course meal for 65 euros each, and feel it was worth every penny. Breakfast the next morning was just as good. It was also in the Dining Room, and was included in the rate we paid. Hot food was ordered off the menu, and cool food (cereals, fruit, cold meats, etc.) were offered buffet style. One last thing: as opulent, grand, and over-the-top as Markree Castle is, the one thing it wasn't was pretentious. You don't have to break out your tux, or sequined cocktail dress; as long as you don't look like you just rolled out of bed, you should be fine. At dinner I wore a white dress shirt and a nice pair of green jeans; I felt perfectly comfortable. Out of the 12 nights we spent in Ireland, this was our favorite we stayed. It's more than just a bed to put your head on; it's an experience, and an amazing one at that.

The drive into Markree Castle is a bit Agatha Christie, especially in torrential rain. You can't…read morehelp but think of Belgian detectives and drawing room accusations as you wind through the estate until you reach the castle. Once you're there though, it's the perfect place to disappear to for a few days of relaxation. We stayed at the apartments on the estate, in a converted stables. They were really nicely set up, very comfortable. These are pet-friendly too, so our dog was able to join us for the trip. It was great to just be able to take her for a walk around the estate. Location wise, there's a lot to do for outdoorsy types. A couple of loughs and bogs are good for hikers, and a few nice pubs in nearby Coolooney.

Most hotels offer shower only rooms after remodeling. Breakfast in the hotel was amazing; included fresh fruits and juices, the traditional Irish entrees or you could opt for pancakes. Every meal includes potatoes; good potatoes. Something special about this hotel is the lavender balm. I meant to request more before I left. You rub this on your wrists or neck before bed and it is supposed to relax you and promote better sleep. It smells so good.

I asked him are there any decent people left in Ireland and I was given a snigger as a reply. I'm quite disappointed that I was treated like this customer service and a small budget compassion needs to be addressed by Management. I am in the hospitality business myself and if any of my staff treat any customer with such coldness and lack of concern, I would be deeply upset. the first that people see on arrival and departure and I really feel that this gentleman has left down my overall experience shall I say is not the best.

And events at the hotel can be loud when you're looking for some peace and quiet in Dundalk. Breakfast was included with our room but it wasn't very impressive - some fried eggs gone cold on a buffet, limited healthy choices otherwise. Unfortunately, I had some bad luck when it came to my stay. When my plug adapter went missing, the hotel provided one. However, it didn't work. By the time I figured that out, it was too late at night to roll down to reception for another one so I just made do. A wedding at the event space meant that drunk partygoers were roaming the hotel grounds, singing and yelling, until the wee hours of the morning. Although I had booked a non-smoking room, and although I was thrilled that the window and balcony door could be opened to let in fresh air, my neighbor decided to smoke on his balcony (continuously) until 3 am. In a desperate attempt for sleep, I called the front desk. Once, the call rang without answer. And on the second try, they hung up on me. Great service and help, guys. I probably wouldn't stay here again.

The bathroom alone is larger than most rooms-particularly my last room in the UK. The gym was decently equipped and there is a wonderful heated indoor pool, with a jacuzzi and sauna. It would be nice if there were access to sound on the TV in the gym. I arrived after 11:00 pm and the front desk was there and ready to check me in. It only took a few minutes. I passed by a very lively bar area that goes until midnight I'm told. About to try the food. Breakfast was buffet style but everything replenished regularly and very fresh and delicious. Freshly fried eggs available how you like them. I have to mention that with all the positives, a couple of caveats. There is a golf course and working farms in the area. I was awakened each morning quite early by noises from surrounding properties. Lastly, I had the Di Not Disturb sign in my door but housekeeping went in anyway. I was told that calls to the room were made, a manager was notified and a supervisor accompanied the cleaning person. I was told this was policy. So, lesson learned. Let the hotel know in advance that you will not want room to be serviced.

As we turned in off winding roads in the dark we saw lots of Christmas trees and lots of coloured lights. It was impressive alright and I was glad to turn off the car. It's an impressively huge hotel and the reception was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Check-in was a pleasant, quick experience. We got a room upgrade, which delighted us. We were offered someone to take our bags to the room. This was a Black Friday deal that included a 2 course meal. So the room was delightful, two double beds and the usual tea/coffee/hairdryer/iron and a rather small tv on the wall given the size of the room. The room was cosy warm and it was appreciated as it was a cold night outside. I tried out the steam bath and jacuzzi. They were superb but two things annoyed - the changing room was unpleasantly cold coming from the jacuzzi and the shower (and I tried more than one) was unreliable. The shower water flow work hands free, there's nothing to push, so it was a light or similar. It went on and off randomly and despite me waving my hand over the 'light' pushing at it and so on it remained hit and miss with more miss than hit. I was tired and I found this to be irritating. Then to dinner; we were seated quickly in the restaurant. I found the starter I had good, but not great and - at the price - it should have been great. The chilli sauce and the tartare sauce were out of jars. My sea bass main was even more disappointing, again at the price it should have been top notch. It was poorly cooked, poorly seasoned, not as described on the menu (it looked more like trout) with overcooked, to near mush, side vegetables and not great chips either. I was tired too, so I decided to eat up what I could and shut up but I didn't enjoy it. The waiter was not focussed on serving us as he should have been. The price of a glass of wine is the same as a bottle of wine in M&S and the price of one cocktail gets me an M&S Dine in for two with a bottle of wine. Like almost everywhere else they sell those miserably tiny and annoying 200ml bottles of coke and nothing screams rip-off to me as loudly as these do but it's an all to common rip - off now. It was a great nights sleep and the breakfast coffee, fish and croissants were ace. I also rant about the bacon and sausages served up. Like most hotels and this hotel seems no different it's the cheapest sausage and bacon that's served up. Once a hotel is four star or above it really should use its buying power to do better. Sausages with artificial type skins should be banned, these are made of collagen, often derived from cattle skin, cellulose, or plastic. Likewise bacon loaded with phosphates make for an unpleasant eat. So, it's 4 star on balance with the dinner food, under seasoned and unexpectedly poor value for money with haphazard service. We are booked to return in April 2020 for a longer stay and we are looking forward to it, so watch this space.
