For many…read moremonths, I stood waiting for the S buses (S1, S2 and S4) only to see bus after bus already packed with passengers. A 10 minute bus ride would easily become 30 minutes just waiting for people to cram inside an already crowded bus. This also assumes that you weren't already waiting 20 minutes for the first available bus. Our prayers were heard. WMATA introduced in March the limited-service S9 Express Bus (http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/PressReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=2524) that runs from Silver Spring, MD to McPherson Square in DC. There are 16 stops instead of the usual 54. Between Irving Street and M Street there are only 4 stops. And, more importantly, most of these S9 buses are brand new and top-of-the-line. There are even handles along the rail that passengers can grab a hole of (no more clinging to a stripper pole). On the down side, the S9 Express Service is rendered useless during heavy congestion. When cars are bumper to bumper during rush hour, the S1 can be just as fast as the S9 (at least between Irving & M St.). Nevertheless, we can always use more buses. WMATA ... Thank You. Yes, I love this bus..... but it picks you up at McPherson almost a full block from the S2 and S4…read morestop. So.... you see the S9 and you hightail it over there only to find out it's going to sit there for 20 minutes. Well, they don't tell you anything, it does just sit there for 20 minutes. In the meantime, a dozen other S2, S4, 42, 43.... fly by you, stopping down the block. Anyway, the simple solution would be for the S9 to stop where the other busses stop. Or stick to its schedule..... but it's metrobus, so that's never gonna happen.

A nice eco friendly way to get to Dulles Airport without the headache. While helping family…read morenavigate to get from and to the airport, I discovered this gem. Pick up is Lfant plaza. The cost is $7 each way. Drop off in front. However plan ahead like for any trip, get here at least 2 hours early in case of traffic. And don't be a seat hog. Put your luggage in the luggage compartments. Your luggage shouldn't be rolling down the aisles, hitting my feet.

The two metro stops are transfer points to other lines. Note that the pick up and drop off locations at L'Enfant are different. Depending on traffic, the trip can be from 30-60 minutes. Other than not having many stops, this bus is able to take Dulles Toll Road in the express lane. While this is an express bus to Dulles, it is essentially a commuter bus. This, there really isn't a place to put your luggage like the airport buses. If you intend to take the bus to catch a flight, plan accordingly. If major accidents/inclement weather occurs or its rush hour, the arrival time of the bus may vary. If there are people waiting, then the bus operators do their best to fit everyone on board. However, this can lead to people standing for the commute until the last stop. If you are pretty short and the bus is packed, aim to stand near the doors where the poles are or hold on to the headrests of the seats. Otherwise it's painful to hold on to the overhead bars for so long. The fare is $7.50 via SmartTrip card (can be bought at any metro station) or exact change. There is no metro operated vehicle parking at the two metro stations. The parking at Herndon-Monroe is currently free, but I imagine that will change once the silver line station there opens up. Then it will be $4.95. Dulles Airport has its own paid parking. Note that WMATA is considering ending Bus 5a when the silver line metro station at Dulles Airport opens. This is still a proposal and not yet decided upon as of February 2020.

Amtrak/VRE/Metro - King Street Station, Old Town Alexandria VA…read more At the start of a weekend trip from Alexandria to Newport News, I was booked on one of Amtrak's Northeast Regional trains. I've lived in Alexandria for about 15 years and appreciate the reach of trains stopping in Old Town. The transit footprint includes the Blue and Yellow Metro rail lines, the VRE commuter rail, and both CSX freight and Amtrak passenger trains - making the station exceptionally versatile. The Amtrak station opens at 6 a.m. - and there's an excellent 24-hour diner a block away, near the Hilton serving Old Town King Street. One of the not-so-great features of the Amtrak side of the station is that passengers heading into D.C. may have to cross over the tracks or face a lot of steps up and down to get from one set of tracks to the other. Complicating the process is the practice of withholding information about which track incoming trains might be using, so we won't know what side of the tracks we will be boarding from. That's all going to change: the site is undergoing major construction changes that will eliminate having to cross the rails on foot. While the construction will likely take most of the year to finish, the result should be amazing. We saw a similar investment in the site two years ago when the WMATA/DASH side of the station was overhauled, greatly improving safety for all who use the station. According to the station's website, the contractor must achieve substantial completion within 756 consecutive calendar days from the Notice-To-Proceed (NTP), issued December 2025 (so figure it'll be under construction until early 2028). This is a station of historic standing, within a stone's throw from the Washington Masonic Temple monument. Once the dust clears, passenger safety will see a significant improvement, as will train traffic.

To save on Uber/Lyft fees, I took the metro from DCA to this station, then took a bus to National Harbor. The bus area is right outside the metro station and fairly easy to navigate. This station is also in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. I was able to walk around and see a little of it, but if you have more time, you can take the free trolley around Old Town- it also stops here. There really isn't much you can walk to unless you have a good amount of time before your bus arrives, so my suggestion is to stay put and not try to find coffee, food, or drinks. I wish there was a convenience store or coffee shop closer!

The closures of Dunn Lorring Metro Station is the main reason for this.   I have watched this area transform from what the area use to look like.  I see high rise apartments  along with businesses like The MITRE Corporation, Northrop Grumman  and The Archer Hotel which use to be a Hilton Hotel. The Sushi Umi store has been there since 2018 and I do not believe the restaurant ever opened.  Please correct me if I am wrong. The McLean Metro stop from what I saw today look clean and well maintained.   The escalator steps were the only thing that looked worn and scuffed up from heavy traffic...as it should be. I saw the cost of getting a day pass is still 10 bucks with $8.00 dollars being credited to your Smartcard.  I saw the new prices for Rush Hours and Non-Rush have changed in price.  Now Non-Rush Hour's price is  $2.00.  I failed to take a picture of the new time prices, but a least you know the Now rush hour time  starts at 5:00am ends at 9:30am.   Rush Hour starts up again at 3:00pm and ends at 7:00pm. I did not get to the top of the subway area, but I will another time.  Nevertheless, I enjoyed seeing the new area of Tyson's Corner from the Metro Station.  I will be sure to ride the Silverline  from start to finish some time on Saturday in the distant future.   Maybe even stop by and visit Relaxation Station  at Weaton Mall. We will see.
