For food, I wasn't crazy for the birria tacos and wouldn't get them again, but everyone else in my group had delicious plates which is why I gave it another chance. Went back with our aunt who was in from AZ. She ordered mini tacos which came with beans. The waitress asked if she wanted beans, she said yes and brought out the charro beans. Well my aunt (who is almost 70) didn't see on the menu it said charro beans was an up charge, refried beans came free. So when she got her bill she was surprised to see she was charged extra for the beans. Mind you the refried beans DID come with her tacos. Why did the waitress not ask "do you want the refried that comes with it or charro for an up charge?" Instead, the waitress automatically gave her charro beans. You don't automatically give someone the upgraded version to their meal and especially not without asking which kind of beans does she want. I'm writing this update bc in my last review the waitress did the same thing by up charging my husband's meal when he didn't ask to. BEWARE here! The food is pretty decent, nothing crazy but it hits the spot if you need some decent Mexican food. However, go over your bill and clarify everything-twice! While working in Kyle, we passed by this place and noticed all of the vehicles parked in front and back. I looked on Google for the name and we immediately decided that we would return for lunch. We had a late lunch but the restaurant was still busy. It's a cute, quaint little restaurant with a lot of personality. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful. I ordered the crunchy beef tacos and my coworker ordered the fish (tilapia) tacos on flour tortillas. Before our food came out, she brought us some chips and salsa. The salsa was amazing!! It was everything salsa should be - spicy and flavorful!! Our food came out within 15 minutes of ordering. We both enjoyed our meals. My crunchy tacos were delicious. On 8/1/26 me and my wife had a late lunch with my daughter, her husband and 2 small children. Food and service was good. My gripe was when we got our bill. Paid with my card and each item we got was charged a Non-cash fee. Also a 20% gratuity fee was charged for 4 adults and 2 small children. The building is very old. As we walked in, we caught a hint of old home smell. Once we proceeded to our seating, we were fine. We got that scent again when we headed out. So, it's only in that small entrance room, where you get that smell... they have indoor and outdoor seating. The food was good. The Gorditas and the shredded chicken in the gorditas lacked Mexican flavor. The menudo had good flavor but lacked panistas and hominy. The place size was large enough to share food. It was our first time at Los Vaqueros. We wanted to try something local we hadn't been to in Kyle and found them on Yelp. It is a quaint location with a limited inside dining but plentiful outside seating. There was a short wait for a Saturday at 7p, only about 15 minutes. We went for our standard fare when we go to a new Mexican joint- enchiladas for the hubby and the chimichanga for me. The chips and salsa was good. Salsa had a good bite to it. Hubby got the vaquero enchilada plate with two fried eggs- his favorite. Three enchiladas- 1 beef and 2 chicken were his choice. Overall the plate was good but could have used more cheese. We both agree the beans needed a little more flavor. My beef chimichanga was good. I had it topped with queso and added some of that yummy salsa for extra flavor. I was visiting family in the Austin/Kyle area and had lunch with a good friend here. I live in Portland, where Tex Mex food is terrible for the most part, so I was quite excited. I hadn't been to Texas in a long time. This place has a very attractive, bright atmosphere with beautiful tiled tables. Service was excellent. We started with the guacamole and chips. The guac was very fresh and clean tasting, also quite delish! For lunch, my friend and I both chose the cheese enchiladas. That might not sound so exciting, but they were! The enchiladas were rich, creamy and tasty, covered in an excellent sauce. The sides of refried beans and Mexican rice were also quite flavorful. First, there's more parking in back! When we arrived mid-morning for breakfast, the front parking lot was full, a good sign. We were seated in the patio area right away, and our food arrived super quick. I'm always amazed at how fast a good Mexican place can get food to the table. Despite being there for breakfast, we requested and received chips and salsa. The salsa was great but be aware: they don't skimp on the jalapeños; it's got spice. I enjoyed my Huevos Divorciados (each egg had custody of the beans in the middle) but my hubby was disappointed with the quality of the steak in his Steak Rancheros ("no buenos"). He found the refried beans to be too soupy for his taste, but I liked mine. We drank coffee (nice and hot) and soda, but I heard a guy at the table nearby order a "loaded" mimosa (it had vodka), so the full bar is operational all day. read more

Y'all. This place was so good. It is not gourmet, but it's not supposed to be, and it is a 5 star spot in my book. It's homemade food served in a restaurant. It's the beans our abuelas made when we were kids. It's the food from family fiestas and other gatherings. This just authentic food that fills your belly and makes you want to come back to find out what else is good on the menu! It is not expensive, it's affordable for a family weekend meal. The aesthetic and service of the restaurant are absolutely great! Our waitress was so kind and friendly. She got everything right and visited our table at just the right times to make sure everything was well and up-kept. The food was hit-or-miss. The sausage patty and chicken fried steak (w/ white gravy atop it) were disgusting. They were clearly low-quality and not tasty at all. The pancakes, scrambled eggs, potatoes, and toast were so delicious though! The eggs were cooked perfect, had the right touch of seasoning, and the toast was actually better than Whataburger's. The temperature of everything mentioned wasn't hot (which would've been nice), but warm. I figure that's why all our food came out at once. The salsa here is pretty good too; it's not chunky, a nice level of spiciness, and flavorful too. After my first time here, I'd recommend the restaurant and would certainly go back to eat again. I have to update my review from 3 stars to 5 stars. EVERY time that we have eaten here , the food is so hot and fresh. For example, this morning I had the Migas at brunch. The potatoes come out very hot and crispy, while at other restaurants they are usually off a steam table. The food here is home cooked, even the tortillas. I gave a three-star review last time due to the service being sub par. Today we had the same waiter. He said he remembered us, that was the day a waiter walked off of the job. Today service was different, just perfect. And a big change, there was a short wait time because they left a few tables empty so (apparently) the ratio of tables to waiters was balanced. Los Vaqueros USED to be my favorite Kyle restaurant, not anymore. The restaurant has traditionally had good food and modest food prices. That part is still pretty much the same. On the negative side, the restaurant has adopted multiple anti-consumer policies that discourage further use of the restaurant, especially for family occasions. There is now a mandatory 20% service charge for parties of five or more. A mandatory service charge for large parties is not uncommon. Treating a party of five, however as a large party is unheard of. An aggressive implementation of this policy would start at six people and a more usual implementation would be for parties of eight or more. Perhaps they want to discourage too many customers from coming there as the restaurant is obviously understaffed. There is also an additional service charge of 4% for use of credit cards. The charge to use credit cards is an unwelcome spreading practice, but Los Vaqueros seems to be leading the charge to make extra unearned profit on the use of cards as the usual credit card company charge to a restaurant is 3.5% and most businesses that have adopted this practice only charge 3%. Finally, Los Vaqueros has now adopted the practice of charging for more than one small basket of chips. If I go back, which is doubtful, I will only go with a maximum of one other person as this restaurant penalizes diners who desire a family social event. read more

My husband and I have been wanting to check out this place for quite a while, but the lines on the weekend are always so long and there are so many people meeting outside. We woke up early this weekend and headed right over to see if we would be able to get a table without all of the crowd. We were in luck! We were seated immediately and ordered our food less than five minutes later. I absolutely love the amount of breakfast options that they have! I ended up getting a scramble with jalapeños tomatoes and onions. It came with potatoes, refried beans, and tortillas. The tortillas were delicious and the meal was pretty good.
