I really want to give them a higher rating but I've tried this spot now many times and just can't seem to like it. I've had many different meals and nothing is GREAT, mediocre at best. It's also super pricey for what you get. $18.00 for a quesadilla and beans and rice seems a little high but I do get food costs are up! We have lived in Cary for many, many years and this is the first time I have eaten here. We stopped by for lunch on a Tuesday since we had an appt at a nearby business. We were quickly seated and presented with the "menu". All of these restaurants seem to have this same "stock menu". Hubby is a fan of the Speedy Gonzales so that's what we both had. A beef taco and a beef enchilada with a side of refried beans. It was standard Mexican fare. The serving size was plentiful !! I skipped dinner that night. Would like to try the margaritas. We are a fan of Los Tres so we decided to stop here for dinner while in Cary. As we hoped, this location was what we expected from los tres: good, quick, and affordable Mexican food. It was about 4 pm when we stopped by. Since it was before the dinner rush, the restaurant was fairly empty. We were seated right away, our server greeted us, gave us chips and salsa, and brought us drinks. The complimentary unlimited chips and salsa they provide are delicious. Plus they are quick to replenish them. I definitely filled up on way too many before my meal arrived. We also ordered the table side guacamole. At this location they do not make it table side so if you want any ingredients omitted, make sure to let them know when you order it. I love all the options they offer and how balanced many of the items are. I decided on the veggie fajitas. The veggies were cooked perfectly and tasted great. They came with tortillas, beans, lettuce, guacamole, and tomato. All of orders were accurate and arrived quickly. I had to go to Chapel Hill for a doctor's appointment and my daughter lives in Raleigh for a few more months before she moves to Scotland. So I thought let's grab lunch while we can. So she picked a few places, more like types of food, and I know that down to two and then she picked Mexican. So I didn't know anything about the restaurant except the name to get the address. Address. I got there first and so I decided to look at the Yelp review to see what other people thought to pick out what I was going to eat. I was surprised that it had a three and then my daughter wanted to go there, cuz she can be very picky. Apparently she had been there many times before and really enjoyed it and they have great beer specials during the week. So I started with the salsa and chips which were great. Other reviews talk about how fresh they are, I absolutely concur. They were fresh and flavorful and a great surprise. The other reviews that I looked at mentioned the queso and the guacamole, but I was enjoying the free salsa so I didn't try those. Those. But I love enchiladas and I had just recently had some at another Wilmington Mexican restaurant, enchilada suprema so I thought well that'll be great. I'll go ahead and compare it to the one in Wilmington. But then I saw this picture of it looked kind of like Pollo ala crema, but it wasn't. It was actually Los Tres Magueyes amazing Tiras de pollo, It was spicy and it has Chipotle cream sauce. It was outstanding. It came with black beans, some rice. I asked for extra sauce because I knew it was going to be good and then the chicken and it was fantastic. I ordered the suprema enchilada to bring home for dinner or lunch tomorrow, I have no doubt it will be fantastic tomorrow. it was a great place. My daughter had the queso, and a main dish that she enjoyed too, A.C.P with Chorizo Rice, grilled chicken and chorizo, covered with cheese sauce! Both of us like to take home left over so we were happy as clams. I'm glad she introduced it to me. I think I'll be going back. It's on a main road, right in Cary, it's not pretentious. My first time here for a late lunch....so late I missed the 2:30 cut off for the lunch specials. Oh well.... There was only ONE waitress for the whole place, so despite it being an "off" time, I had to wait even to be seated...being my first time, was not sure if I should go ahead and sit down or not. Others had the same issue I noticed later... After finally being seated, I was brought chips and spicy salsa...with NO cilantro...too bad, it would have helped. The chips were warm and a good thickness. My drink was delivered, but had to wait for her to come back to take my order. The menu is large and they have two different prices for the combo's, so be aware. I had one taco and one burrito with rice and beans. The taco was good, but was put in the beans, so was soggy when I got it. The beans were ok, but thinner than most places. The rice was very plain. The burrito had some ground beef in it and had a little sauce over it with a little cheese. As I was leaving, more people were coming in. I felt bad for the one waitress. She did the best she could, but she rushing so much there was little said the whole time. I may come back and try a lunch special, but probably will not come back for dinner. It's a little more than my usual place and they have more than one person, and the salsa is not so spicy. read more

My better half and I have dined in or picked up meals from here for roughly 7 years now, and his father and him have dined there for 20+ years. I can not understand why so many reviews are negative, unless its friends or family of the competition trying to bomb their Yelp. The food is always a delight! The drinks are freekin generous with the spirits, and the staff are always super kind and efficient. My husband and I have come to this Cary location in the past and the food was always good. For some reason, our visit to this restaurant was less than satisfactory this past Sunday. My husband ordered the Jalisco Shrimp special. The shrimp and chicken pieces were overcooked. It looked like they just ladled tomato sauce on overcooked shrimp and chicken. The vegetable was too salty. I ordered the Chipotle Shrimp special. Both items were overcooked! The shrimps were chewy and chicken were not cooked well. I had a pretty solid experience when dining here last. I was probably more overly ecstatic than I should have been because they finally have chicken rolls on their menu. I was told years back this location did have them, I gasped in disbelief, and then would make special trips to the Chapel Hill Road location for the rolls (yes they are that good). However I was shocked to see the addition of an avocado (meh, but they are good for you) and that it was missing the smothering of yummy queso. It was still tasty but I will be asking for the smothering of queso next time as is essential to flavor combo for this dish in my opinion. Tortilla chips came out warm (as they are meant to be), and the salsa was flavorful and fresh. The service was friendly enough, and most importantly they constantly kept my glass full (soda this time around). They location has a very vibrant atmosphere with various colors wherever you may glance. There is a lot of seating and they seemed to spread it out (which I dig, privacy is nice at times). Its the kind of place where the staff, many of whom are family, remember your name, your food preferences, greet your children by THEIR first names, etc. The food runs GREAT to EXCEPTIONAL. Always served FAST and HOT; even during the business of times. As you might imagine, the exterior of a building more than 30 year old has on-going maintenance issues. However, the kitchen is spotless, and the dining room has been "updated" at least 3 times in the past 10 years. I love this Mexican restaurant. They have multiple locations, and I haven't been to one I haven't liked. The choridip is by far my favorite thing on the menu. It is a cheese dip with chorizo in it. It isn't spicy, which I think would make it better, but I still adore it. I always eat so much that I'm full by the time I get my meal. I've gotten tons of things here. This time I got the huevos con chorizo (can you tell I love chorizo?). It was very, very good. It is served with beans and rice and 4 tortillas. I only wish it were more spicy, but that's easily fixed by adding hot sauce. Their house made hot sauce is actually pretty spicy, but it is a little too chipotle-flavored for my liking. The food here is always prepared very well, your food is always warm when served to you, they have great drink specials, and their staff has been friendly and sometimes funny at every location. It is with great reserve that I find it necessary to change my review of Los Tres Magueyes on SW Maynard Rd in Cary. Our Family has a very long and personal relationship with this restaurant. Our first visit just after the birth of my Son in 1992, and going back at least twice a month since then. The time between visits became much greater for the past few years as we found the food becoming more and more commercial, and as a result; more bland. Upon our last visit, which was a bit earlier in the day, with more natural light filling the dining area, we decided that we would probably not return. The place was grungy. While waiting for our food, I studied the interior and noticed that the windows and sills, and walls were in dire need of cleaning. The ceiling tiles were the originals and badly needed replacing. Sadly, the Owners have found it more convenient to hoard the profits and not re-invest any money, other than the new seating that was installed a few years back. So, sadly, we say goodbye to an old friend. But fortunately, found a new friend. We visited the La Rancherita in Apex, and it was Wonderful! But that's another Story to be told... read more

For what it is, and where we are, Los Tres Magueyes does a decent job. Located in a somewhat dilapidated building on the corner of Maynard and Kildaire LTM serves up lighting-fast Gringo Mexican food at a very fair price. I swear I ordered, blinked and my food was ready. That said, the only way the food could be more Americanized would be if it came on a sesame seed bun instead of a tortilla, but the ingredients are fresh, the service is fast, efficient and friendly. Kid-friendly with a lot of veggie options, too. Will I continue my search for authentic Mexican in the Triangle? Yes. Would I come back to Los Tres Magueyes? Si Senor. read more

Our second visit. We came back because of a positive first experience. Today we tried again.. awful. Angry, wretched service. Waitress did not write the orders down which led to mistakes. She disappeared so we weren't able to tell her about the mistake. Out of drinks. Out of napkins etc. When she did come back to the table and we told her that it wasn't what we ordered she stomped off and came back with a menu. She told us that we should have read the menu.. when she read the description to us, turns out, we were right. She walked off and then came back and slapped the ticket on the table without a word. We felt like it was a personal assault. Never have I experienced such unprofessionalism and complete disregard for decency. We spoke to the manager, He was polite and apologized. Manager also offered to make another dish but we had been waiting so long, we hadn't the time to wait. I would have appreciated a decision of the bill but that wasn't offered, nor did he offer an incentive to return. It's been decades since I walked out of a restaurant without leaving a tip. Often times the issues we experience while dinning are out of the servers control and I tip knowing that's the case. I realize every establishment has possible casualties of Covid etc. but this was totally unwarranted and frankly upsetting. There are many other choices for Mexican and this will no longer be mine. The food was less than stellar which was overshadowed but the service. Ordered three fish tacos with so little meat, we thought the were vegetarian, they were supposed to have avocado on them, instead it was one sliver. My girlfriend wanted to come here for her birthday since she wanted Mexican food. It was a Sunday night and the place wasn't crowded do we were seated right away and the server took our drink order very quickly. Shortly after we were seated another group of people came in and that was when the service took a nose dive. We placed our food order and then our server went over to speak with the other table. Not to take their order or idle conversation but a full conversation. It took us a longer time than expected to receive our food, since our server was still talking to the other table. This was how the rest of the night went. At no time did she come back over to see how everything was, or if we need anything else. I did interrupt her conversation so we could get some extra napkins, she seemed annoyed. She got two napkins, slammed them on the table and went back to her conversation with the other table. The manager refilled our drinks and another server got us our check. Our server did get us a to go box, which she just tossed on the table and walked away. This restaurant has seriously declined since its opening years ago. The flavors of the dishes don't differ much between them: all beef dishes are tasteless, finely ground meat, chicken dishes have virtually no flavor and it seems as though they cover everything with cheese (except the rice) to please our American tastes. For example, I ordered a Chile relleno tonight. It's supposed to have cheese inside mild peppers that are later covered in a batter and fried. Topped with sauce, they are delicious when done authentically. Tonight, my peppers were filled with the finely ground beef and covered in cheese. Very disappointing! Oh my goodness I love this place. It's inexpensive, the portions are enough for a left-over for tomorrow's lunch kind of deal, and the staff is always happy. The decor is great, and the first time I went there, my friends and I were the only people there which was neat (it was late on a Sunday) so we really had a chance to look around without people thinking we were being creepy. I know this may seem like a weird thing to point out, but their rice is AMAZING. Look, I am a simple girl, but I know good rice when I eat it. Most Mexican places I've been to around here have dry, crunchy, overly seasoned rice. Los Tres Magueyes, man I do not know what they do to their rice but it is always super fluffy and happy to see you. Super vegetarian friendly, which is also nice, and prompt service when they're not crazy busy (go on a Fri/Sat/Sun (afternoon) and it's packed. The Cliff's Notes version: Consistently good Mexican food, ridiculously fast service, friendly staff who pretend to be impressed by my rudimentary Spanish language skills. I've been going to Los Tres since the mid-90s and it's been a pleasure to watch this chain grow across the Triangle as they've opened locations in Morrisville and Wake Forest. The staff is always attentive and will even remember your drink order if you go on a weekly basis like us. The menu doesn't differ much from places like El Dorado, but the food is just SO much better. (How these other places manage to screw up rice and refried beans I will never understand.) read more
