I'd say the Mole Hoya was the highlights of the meal, it was VERY spicy (HOT) tho! This is the best Mexican restaurant I know of in Astoria. It has lots of foot traffic so you know the food must be good! It's integrally part of the neighborhood. I think folks already know that Los Portales is the best Mexican restaurant in Astoria. I just want to say they did an awesome job with a large order I recently placed. I hosted a work event in Midtown East -- Delivery apps wouldn't go that far (which isn't Los Portales' fault), so I ordered about 70 tacos for pick-up. I let them know the order a few days in advance, made a few small change the day before, and let them know I'd need them at 3:45 pm to make it for a 4:30 pm event. The twinge of pain I endure knowing I left behind not one; but two taco meccas 1. My hometown of San Diego and occasional late night trips to Tijuana 2. My 3 years of living in LA and dangerously venturing to east LA in the middle of the night in search of popular stands to enjoy my tacos and questionable horchatas' on the trunk of my car Fast forward - I moved to the love of my life NYC and only discovered mediocre tacos (but wonderful tamales from the tamale cart lady in East Harlem!) Finally. FINALLY. I have found them. I have found taco happiness again. The flavors are right up there. The perfect tostada crunch, the multiple salsa flavors, the fresh crisp iceberg. Sadly the tacos have decreased in size, no more chambray onions, no avocado or cilantro, we barely got 4 small slivers of radish and a 1/4 of a slice of lime and we couldn't get a napkin or even plastic fork or knives, well you get the point. We order 4 tacos and 2 tostadas and while I understand that the cost of food is rising. They need to do a better job at figuring out how to pass the cost to the consumer. I been coming here for years and I always love the food, the tacos are very tasty. But today is the last time i get to eat here. The restaurant delivers a solid line up of tacos, quesadillas and other Mexican fare that are quite delicious (their green salsa is the bomb, yeah I'm old) and very value oriented. In my long standing quest to find the best tacos in NYC. I think I have narrowed it down to at least 3-5 locations. Los Portales is definitely in one of my top favorites. Due to my late night inclination for tacos, I have only ever been here past 9pm and it has never disappointed. Very few taquerias sell off cuts of meat for their tacos and I love Los Portales for being one of the few. I know it sounds odd to eat oreja tacos but that sticky textural goodness can't compare to anything else. For the less enlightened, off cuts aren't their only options, they have excellent al Pastor and chorizo tacos as well. In addition to more traditional options, they also have a few rarer options like tacos arabes, a traditional fusion riff on al pastor from Puebla Mexico. For drink options, I particularly like their horchata. If you get the large, it comes in the giant quart container! I can neither confirm nor deny drinking one entire one by myself. Honestly I have nothing bad to say about Los Portales. Easily one of the top taquerias in New York City and very affordable (don't judge me for being a glutton at under 2$ a taco). I long for their delicious homemade salsas and compare every other Mexican place to theirs and none come close. I'm totally hooked on all three. That alone has made me a solid customer for decades. Their late hours drew me in originally and I especially like seeing the friendly man cooking in the window and that he has been here the entire time. That says a lot. Pretty good authentic Mexican food in the area. I ordered the cheese enchiladas (suizas or oaxaca cheese enchiladas per menu) with the green sauce. The enchiladas were pretty filling overall. The green sauce added the extra kick, but wasn't to the point where it was so spicy that I couldn't eat the enchiladas. The beans and rice came on the side. The beans were plentiful with the enchiladas. Rice was alright, though it was a pretty significant portion and I obviously couldn't finish it all. For $9.95 it isn't a bad deal for enchiladas in Astoria. Overall a pretty good place and one that I might try again in the future. read more

Its a lil hole in the wall spot located off of crescent and broadway in Astoria and there tacos are banging. The tortas are good money too, but for anything else i wasn't impressed. I ordered the nachos one time and from eating Mexican food so often i always got black beans. Los portalis game me pinto bean lmaoooo and it was basuda. I came in here yesterday on a drunken binge and was in the mood for my regular tacos and a torta. The food came in a timely manner like usual and the staff is awesome. The tacos here im not going to lie, there good, but you would think they were made for adolescents and baby's. They are real small so you have to order like 5 if you're really hungry. The torta is banging, but sometimes they'll give a flimsy small piece of chicken cutlet with all bread, beans, and a salad on it lol. For the most part though the food is good money. If you love Mexican food and don't mind little hole in the wall spots, which i always find to have the best food, i highly suggest you come to here for Mexican. You wont be disappointed at all. There spicy pork tacos are the best tacos they offer, but i try to stay away from that swine even though i get caught a lot. The chicken tacos are the second best followed by bistec. Overall this place gets a solid 5 stars in my books. They never let me down when i come here. Im mpt going to say everything they make here is banging, bug as long as you keep it tacos and tortas, you cant lose. There burritos are mediocre so I'm not going to rave on them. Alright. Los Portales/New Portales has been my go-to for tacos within the past 10 years. It survived 3 girlfriends, one marriage and various income changes in my life - yet somehow I always find time to jump on the Astoria-bound N train to make it here. Why? Deliciousness abounds. That's why. So here's the 411 on Los Portales. First of all, it's named after the famous historic district in Toluca, the capital of Mexico state (which is not Mexico City). Los Portales refers to the gates in the town square where the fledgling Mexican Federal government had its early institutions..think Independence Hall in Philadelphia for equivalent cultural standing. Second, if your concept of tacos is based on the crunchy golden saddle stuffed with sloppy Joe that came out of a box, then this place will beat that out of you, you gringo. Typical Mexican tacos are soft corn tortillas heated on a comal, chopped onions and cilantro, protein of your choice, a squeeze of lime + radishes on the side, followed by a splash of salsa Verde or Rojo - if it's not done this way, it's not Mexican. Now in terms of protein, it's not the exotic stuff that you get in Sunset park like chivos (goat) or chapulines (grasshoppers), but you do have stuff like buches (stomach), orajes (ear) and my personal favorite: suadero (brisket), braised in a vat of delicious goo proudly displayed at their front window. They also have the schwarma setup for doing tacos al pastor. For the Mexican buff out there, no, you can't get stuff like Huitlacoche (look this one up) or Flor de Calabezas (pumpkin blossoms) on your quesadillas, but they do serve a decent Pozole (pork and hominy soup) on weekends, and Aquas Frescas like Flor de Jamaica (Hisbiscus tea), Horchata (rice milk) and Tamarindos (Tamarind juice) are always on tap. Alright, so what do you need for culinary bliss? Order a platter full of tacos. 2 or 3 each of the suaderos, the chorizos and the al pastor, get some cebollitas (Cambray onions stewed in delicious goo), grab a glass of aquas de Jamaica, then go to town with the salsas at hand. I consider this place a sacred testing ground for potential significant others - if they cannot come out of their shell and enjoy a messy platter of tacos here, they are not worthy of my love and attention. My wife passed it with flying colors on our first date, and we have been going back occasionally, ever since. So yeah, solid options, I'll return time and again for good decent Mexican food. read more
