This is the best Mexican restaurant I know of in Astoria. It has lots of foot traffic so you know the food must be good! It's integrally part of the neighborhood. One customer has said she's been coming here since she was little. I love the Al pastor, burritos and tacos here. Everything is moderately priced. The tres leches and horchata is fantastic. The ladies in the front are quick and attentive. Cheers read more

A excellent Mexican food joint in Astoria on Broadway that ain't fancy interior wise but makes up for it by having delicious authentic Mexican food at prices that are more then reasonable. Good tacos , burritos, enchiladas, soups , wraps , sandwiches and much more ..We got the corner table , we got our menus , and we got tacos , and got our margaritas, and nachos with salsa and let's eat , Oh wait I ordered chicken enchiladas with red sauce which I won't share cause I am picking up the check and no one has a problem with that .final verdict , simple interior , great food , happy atmosphere and nice folks who work at los portales . 4.5 stars and this non drinker is tipsy from the margarita. . read more

This is a fast paced environment with a sit down section. Modify your level of expectation. It's a turn and burn, but you can sit down. Don't expect quiet conversation. This is a very hustle and muscle spot. Great Mexican fair. Serve that very reasonable prices with a knowledgeable and capable staff. My favorite taco shop in all of New York City. read more

I am writing to share some feedback regarding a recent visit to your restaurant. On Wednesday, June 17, I visited with my family of 12 to enjoy some tacos based on the positive recommendations I had heard. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing. We specifically visited to watch the World Cup soccer game, but we were told it could not be played due to a lack of internet service. In today's technology era, we found this difficult to believe and were disappointed that this accommodation couldn't be made for our group. Additionally, we were unhappy with the service we received. Our initial server appeared upset by our presence and eventually stopped helping us altogether, leaving her coworker to finish serving our table. As a large group of 12, we were looking forward to a great family outing, but we felt we deserved much better service than what was provided. I hope you will take this feedback into consideration to improve the experience for future guests. read more

I got this place delivered. The food was good, wouldn't say the best I've had... But it did hit the criteria of what they are and what the menu said they were. I'd say the Mole Hoya was the highlights of the meal, it was VERY spicy (HOT) tho! Also I've heard about sopes and it was my first time trying it and I liked the corn base, again just wouldve loved more flavor/oomph to the top. I would say the prices were so low that I can't complain!! It was a good deal and it came with a lot of food. read more

I think folks already know that Los Portales is the best Mexican restaurant in Astoria. I just want to say they did an awesome job with a large order I recently placed. I hosted a work event in Midtown East -- Delivery apps wouldn't go that far (which isn't Los Portales' fault), so I ordered about 70 tacos for pick-up. I let them know the order a few days in advance, made a few small change the day before, and let them know I'd need them at 3:45 pm to make it for a 4:30 pm event. They had everything hot and ready (loaded with tons of lime and radish) to go on time. My coworkers loved everything, particularly the adobada, pastor, oreja, and veggie tacos. read more

The twinge of pain I endure knowing I left behind not one; but two taco meccas 1. My hometown of San Diego and occasional late night trips to Tijuana 2. My 3 years of living in LA and dangerously venturing to east LA in the middle of the night in search of popular stands to enjoy my tacos and questionable horchatas' on the trunk of my car Fast forward - I moved to the love of my life NYC and only discovered mediocre tacos (but wonderful tamales from the tamale cart lady in East Harlem!) Finally. FINALLY. I have found them. I have found taco happiness again. The flavors are right up there. The perfect tostada crunch, the multiple salsa flavors, the fresh crisp iceberg. Albeit not homemade tortillas but a wonderful vessel for meat. I will be back to try more. For now, I've indulged in the Al pastor tostada, pozole blanco, a special taco burrito thing with cheesy meat, and a suadero taco. I will be back to try all the meats and all the things. The price point - half of Manhattan's average taco price. FYI pozole is served everyday as opposed to a once a week special. I love you. See you soon Los Portales read more

Local taco spot in the Astoria area with long business hours to help fill the midnight cravings. They make great tacos and are pretty fairly priced. There usually isn't much of a wait and they're quick to fulfill your order. Horchata is refreshing and is sold by the quart. If you're looking to do takeaway, eating it as soon as possible is your best bet for fresh, non-soggy, tacos! P.S. - the sauces they give, if you have extras, are great on eggs! read more

The food can be a hit or miss, but the plates taste yummy when they are. Staff is always welcoming and the atmosphere is always fresh.

Coronavirus Diary Day 42 - 4/25/2020 We tried Los Portales and thought it could replace our favorite taco joint, which is Athens Grill on 30th ave....which was closed. But turns out it was not as good. Carne Enchilada taco was good but not as tender as el grill. And al pastor was just so so. read more

~$2 for a taco?!? The most amazing deal I've ever seen in NYC. I almost shed a tear of happiness when I saw the menu. My favorites are the al pastor and shrimp tacos, also good in burrito form. I was insanely full for under $10. The service is quick and nice too. read more

Sadly the tacos have decreased in size, no more chambray onions, no avocado or cilantro, we barely got 4 small slivers of radish and a 1/4 of a slice of lime and we couldn't get a napkin or even plastic fork or knives, well you get the point. We order 4 tacos and 2 tostadas and while I understand that the cost of food is rising. They need to do a better job at figuring out how to pass the cost to the consumer. I been coming here for years and I always love the food, the tacos are very tasty. But today is the last time i get to eat here. I rather pay a little more for better service and a bit mire food if necessary. Will not return as the lack of service has been on the decline for a while. read more

AWESOME Been here over a 100 times, and it tastes just as amazing every time. I prefer Los Tacos in the city, but this place is a close second. They're not as tasty, but the hominess and rustic flavors make up for it. You can really taste the corn in their tortillas. Very fresh. And fantastic sauces too (salsa verde). Usually never a wait. My second favorite taco spot in the city so far!! Los Portales can get it -- their tacos are delicious, satisfying, and NOT $4 a pop (classic NYC exorbitance). The unassuming storefront with the window view to the meat spit and stewed onions belies a great selection of Latin American cheap eats. I haven't ventured beyond the chips and guac starter (not much to say there) and the tacos -- the lengua taco has got. your. back. it is so tender and yummy! There's also a drink called agua jamaica that I had never heard of before & it's an unconventional flavor in a good way. Service is always friendly too! read more

Los Portales is the type of place that must have inspired the term "hole in the wall", but that adds to its charm. The restaurant delivers a solid line up of tacos, quesadillas and other Mexican fare that are quite delicious (their green salsa is the bomb, yeah I'm old) and very value oriented. I believe it's one of the best in Astoria. With tacos running around $2.25 I'd highly recommend taking the N or W north to Broadway and walk west. If you think manhattan when you hear Broadway, get off the island. Anyway be like the Beastie Boys on this one and Ch-Check it out. read more

I ate here once, many years ago, pre-pandemic, but I wasn't impressed. They recently renovated the inside, so I decided to give the place another shot, and I am so glad I did. The food is not only delicious, but very affordable. I recently had the chicken enchiladas with rice & beans, which was a huge amount of food. On my last trip, I had three tacos, which were tiny, but tasty. However, the item that I am addicted to are the chips and salsa. The salsa is the best I've ever had - so fresh and spicy. You must try it! read more

In my long standing quest to find the best tacos in NYC. I think I have narrowed it down to at least 3-5 locations. Los Portales is definitely in one of my top favorites. Due to my late night inclination for tacos, I have only ever been here past 9pm and it has never disappointed. Very few taquerias sell off cuts of meat for their tacos and I love Los Portales for being one of the few. I know it sounds odd to eat oreja tacos but that sticky textural goodness can't compare to anything else. For the less enlightened, off cuts aren't their only options, they have excellent al Pastor and chorizo tacos as well. In addition to more traditional options, they also have a few rarer options like tacos arabes, a traditional fusion riff on al pastor from Puebla Mexico. For drink options, I particularly like their horchata. If you get the large, it comes in the giant quart container! I can neither confirm nor deny drinking one entire one by myself. Honestly I have nothing bad to say about Los Portales. Easily one of the top taquerias in New York City and very affordable (don't judge me for being a glutton at under 2$ a taco). Do not skip if you are looking for great tacos. read more

if you're not a regular at los portales, you should be! my go-to order is 3 tacos (which alone fill me up) and a side of chips and salsa (a generous helping) -- and it's all barely $12! The food is affordable, fast and they close late. They have changed! The quality of the meat is not that great. The steak tacos are ok, nachos are good, however the flautas are disgusting! the chicken has no seasoning and that makes the flautas so bad. If you ask for sauce and your food doesn't come with it, they will charge you extra for it. If you order over the phone be prepared to be on hold. read more

Probably the closest to tacos from SoCal that I've gotten in Queens by far. They're pretty cheap (~$3 per taco with delivery!), and each taco is delicious and packs a punch of flavor in every bite. Would highly recommend them for veggie and meat tacos alike in the Astoria, Queens area. read more

I long for their delicious homemade salsas and compare every other Mexican place to theirs and none come close. I'm totally hooked on all three. That alone has made me a solid customer for decades. Their late hours drew me in originally and I especially like seeing the friendly man cooking in the window and that he has been here the entire time. That says a lot. Used to get their veggie burritos a couple of times a week and loved them and miss them but sadly I can't have gluten :( Their enchiladas are my now usual go to, I've liked their tacos ( tried recently) and their quesadillas which can be made with huge and homemade corn tortillas that I also love! Once years ago I had a shrimp entree that was AMAZING and will be one of my go tos from now on too. Can't beat the prices ( though raised over the past few years), late hours and especially the super flavorful salsas!! I am almost always disappointed anywhere else now that I have been hooked on Los Portales! read more

Pretty good authentic Mexican food in the area. I ordered the cheese enchiladas (suizas or oaxaca cheese enchiladas per menu) with the green sauce. The enchiladas were pretty filling overall. The green sauce added the extra kick, but wasn't to the point where it was so spicy that I couldn't eat the enchiladas. The beans and rice came on the side. The beans were plentiful with the enchiladas. Rice was alright, though it was a pretty significant portion and I obviously couldn't finish it all. For $9.95 it isn't a bad deal for enchiladas in Astoria. Overall a pretty good place and one that I might try again in the future. read more

Let me start off saying i loveeee Mexican food, but with me its hit or miss in Astoria. There's a lot of Mexican places in Astoria, but for the most part there all generic and nothing special. A good friend of mind put me onto this los portalis and I'm not going to lie or stare you wrong. Its a lil hole in the wall spot located off of crescent and broadway in Astoria and there tacos are banging. The tortas are good money too, but for anything else i wasn't impressed. I ordered the nachos one time and from eating Mexican food so often i always got black beans. Los portalis game me pinto bean lmaoooo and it was basuda. I came in here yesterday on a drunken binge and was in the mood for my regular tacos and a torta. The food came in a timely manner like usual and the staff is awesome. The tacos here im not going to lie, there good, but you would think they were made for adolescents and baby's. They are real small so you have to order like 5 if you're really hungry. The torta is banging, but sometimes they'll give a flimsy small piece of chicken cutlet with all bread, beans, and a salad on it lol. For the most part though the food is good money. If you love Mexican food and don't mind little hole in the wall spots, which i always find to have the best food, i highly suggest you come to here for Mexican. You wont be disappointed at all. There spicy pork tacos are the best tacos they offer, but i try to stay away from that swine even though i get caught a lot. The chicken tacos are the second best followed by bistec. Overall this place gets a solid 5 stars in my books. They never let me down when i come here. Im mpt going to say everything they make here is banging, bug as long as you keep it tacos and tortas, you cant lose. There burritos are mediocre so I'm not going to rave on them. Highly recommend read more

This place is excellent! Definitely in my top 3 Mexican restaurants in NYC. Authentic flavors at normal prices. Thank you!!

Alright. Los Portales/New Portales has been my go-to for tacos within the past 10 years. It survived 3 girlfriends, one marriage and various income changes in my life - yet somehow I always find time to jump on the Astoria-bound N train to make it here. Why? Deliciousness abounds. That's why. So here's the 411 on Los Portales. First of all, it's named after the famous historic district in Toluca, the capital of Mexico state (which is not Mexico City). Los Portales refers to the gates in the town square where the fledgling Mexican Federal government had its early institutions..think Independence Hall in Philadelphia for equivalent cultural standing. Second, if your concept of tacos is based on the crunchy golden saddle stuffed with sloppy Joe that came out of a box, then this place will beat that out of you, you gringo. Typical Mexican tacos are soft corn tortillas heated on a comal, chopped onions and cilantro, protein of your choice, a squeeze of lime + radishes on the side, followed by a splash of salsa Verde or Rojo - if it's not done this way, it's not Mexican. Now in terms of protein, it's not the exotic stuff that you get in Sunset park like chivos (goat) or chapulines (grasshoppers), but you do have stuff like buches (stomach), orajes (ear) and my personal favorite: suadero (brisket), braised in a vat of delicious goo proudly displayed at their front window. They also have the schwarma setup for doing tacos al pastor. For the Mexican buff out there, no, you can't get stuff like Huitlacoche (look this one up) or Flor de Calabezas (pumpkin blossoms) on your quesadillas, but they do serve a decent Pozole (pork and hominy soup) on weekends, and Aquas Frescas like Flor de Jamaica (Hisbiscus tea), Horchata (rice milk) and Tamarindos (Tamarind juice) are always on tap. Alright, so what do you need for culinary bliss? Order a platter full of tacos. 2 or 3 each of the suaderos, the chorizos and the al pastor, get some cebollitas (Cambray onions stewed in delicious goo), grab a glass of aquas de Jamaica, then go to town with the salsas at hand. I consider this place a sacred testing ground for potential significant others - if they cannot come out of their shell and enjoy a messy platter of tacos here, they are not worthy of my love and attention. My wife passed it with flying colors on our first date, and we have been going back occasionally, ever since. So yeah, solid options, I'll return time and again for good decent Mexican food. read more

In search of pre game eats before attending a nearby Yelp Elite Event my growling intestines lead me to Portales for legit Mexican tacos and Horchata. Astoria is polluted with many hit or miss eateries. When in doubt trust the reviews. Portales reminded me of another favorite taco spot I've frequented in Jackson Heights. Cozy, quaint, Mama Y Papa joint dishing out authentic flavorful eats. The menu boasted heavily about the tortas and famous Al Pastor with Pineapple tacos. I was hypnotized by the thought of freshly sliced pineapple garnishing juicy pork. So I went with my Gut. Minutes later a plate filled with 3 assorted tacos was placed in front of me. I ordered 2pulled pork (carnitas) tacos and 3 Al Pastor with pineapple tacos. The carnitas were JUICY and thick slices of pork went into these tacos. The tortillas were perfect! For $1.50 a Taco how can you go wrong ? The Al Pastor with Pineapple was LIFE CHANGING. The freshly spiced pork blends heavenly with the sweet pineapple. It's simply an orgasm with a pork & pineapple filled taco. Everyone should experience this once in their life. I washed that down with a iced cold Horchata. That's what I call a happy ending. read more
