Food is always great and priced reasonably. The service is always top notch. I just wish they would get their liquor license back.

Tlahcos - Quesa Birria

Tlahcos

(141 reviews)

Outstanding Mexican food. Truly, some of the best Mexican food I've eaten in Indiana so far. And…read moreTlahcos is located in Plainfield, of all places. What a pleasant surprise! I got the quesa birria tacos, which is shredded beef and melted cheese in a double corn tortilla. They come three to an order, with a cup of red consomme to dip them into, and a couple of lime wedges to squeeze over everything. They do not come with any sides, so I ordered the refried pinto beans and carrot rice, because I really wanted some rice and beans. Beans and rice are my litmus test of any Mexican restaurant, and I'm happy to say that the rice and beans at Tlahcos passed the test with flying colors, and they are sublime. I don't practice Santeria, but perhaps the people at Tlahcos do, because their food is bewitching. The carne asada was also ordered, and it came with grilled nopales (cactus), cebollita canbray (little onions), grilled panela cheese, plus guacamole, salsa, rice and black beans. It was a 98%, and what would have raised it to a 100% was if it came with tortillas. But really, it was a great dish! If you're a person who is used to eating carne asada on a regular basis, you will be satisfied with this one. Chips and salsa are complimentary, which shows that Tlahcos knows its Plainfield-area visitors. My children, who eat like birds, filled themselves up on chips and salsa and declined a full meal, but Tlahcos does have a kids menu. On the kids menu, you'll find arroz con pollo, mini cheese quesadillas, a taco, mac & cheese, chicken nuggets and a mini pizza. Kid meals come with your choice of side, which are fries, rice & beans or a cup of fruit. They have a full cocktail list, as well as beer, wine and hot beverages (coffee and tea). I got a Paloma, which was a little light on the booze, but tasty nevertheless. The rim of the glass was beautifully decorated with Tajin, which added a nice, spicy kick. It was one of those drinks that makes you want to lick the glass.

I have had the Birria tacos, the guacamole, the refried beans, and black beans, as well as multiple food options. Seriously, I have taken clients here as well as family. My most recent experience was still great, but there are two items I would never order off the menu. Let's look at the good and bad of these items: Baja Fish Tacos- I was looking for the cabbage-filled delicacies that are light but flavorful. What I received appeared to be small fish sticks stuck into a tortilla. The cabbage and sauce were tasty, but they could not mask the main cause of the tacos' failure: the fish. Do not order these. Ceviche Yucatan- looking for flavor with the light ceviche? That is not what this is. This is a large portion of ceviche dressed in a sweet sauce that completely overpowers it. Not even sure that you can call it a ceviche at this point. But the portion was good, and the ceviche ingredients looked fresh. Otherwise, we had the house guac, which was so so good, the birria tacos, which were amazing with the sauce as usual, the fundido, which was flavorful cheese and chorizo, as well as the Zapopan, which was a wonderful fusion of mango and spice (who knew bacon in this would be great). Housemade Horchata is great, not too sweet and flavorful as well as the Rita margarita! GREAT. Overall, a great night, some great food, and I will be back, but I will just not order the two items discussed above! PROS: Great flavors and food Good seating Good service Parking garage or street parking, easy CONS: Smaller actual bar top area

The proteins were tender and flavorful!! I i could eat 3-4 tacos in a sitting but didnt want to overdo it. If you're into spice, I always recommend adding the orange sauce to your tacos! Thank me later! Customer Service: Our waitress was very attentive. Unfortunately, I didn't get her name to be recognized but I have always been pleasant with service here! The staff is polite, attentive, and whether busy or not, the food comes fast, hot, and fresh! Ambiance: My boss and I went after work (5pm) and it wasn't busy at all in the evening! This was abnormal to me but I was happy to get seated quickly. They seem to have added more tvs since my last visit, but it is a welcoming space. Has an ice cream area and they also serve alcohol! I would highly recommend giving this place a chance!

We stopped in for Sunday lunch and to watch the afternoon football game. Inside, the dining room is a mix of booths and tables. There is a full bar on one side. We were told to sit anywhere. Emerson, our server, was friendly and attentive. Beverages, complementary chips and salsa came out quickly. Food came out quickly, as well. The salsa is really good with lots of sweet tomato chunks and spices. I had the Taco Salad with shredded chicken. The salad came in a fried tortilla bowl. The generous portion of chicken was moist and flavorful. The guac topping was delicious. My husband had the lunch special Chimichanga with ground beef. His plate was huge and colorful with pico, rice, beans and a cheesy covered chimichanga. The food is a step above your average Mexican restaurant. They offer daily drink specials (beer and margarita). I was tempted, but it was just too early in the day. They also have a kid's menu. There is plenty of parking in the strip mall lot and the restaurant is fully accessible. I recommend and will return.

I had 6 tacos (please don't judge haha): Shredded beef, grilled chicken, steak, carnita, chorizo, pastor. For $1-$2 you can't beat that!!! All of the tacos were hot and fresh, and I had soft corn tortillas with cilantro and onion for a street taco feel. Needless to say I left full and happy for the day and ate good for a few bucks! I also indulged in a SPIRIT-FREE margarita - specifically the Coconut/Pineapple which was refreshing (and safe for work hours!!) Customer Service: Our server was friendly and patient as we were a group of 6 ordering a little of everything. The crowd was somewhat light for the lunch hour so we got our food in a timely manner after ordering. Ambiance: This is a traditional mexican restaurant like others in the area and the decor is pretty common. With the taco special, I'm inclined to frequent more often, especially with the great service and casual atmosphere. This place is nice for lunch with friends or coworkers or even a dinner night with the family!

The atmosphere was rocking with lots of kids and families raising money for charity. The drinks came out quickly. The margarita was the worse margarita I've ever had in life. The mix was off. It was as approaching close, so told the waiter to take it back and not replace. The sangria was fine A donation was made to a local charity. They took the margarita off the bill. 2.5, rounding to a 3 with courteous staff.

Almost resembling a chain restaurant( which it very well might be--no idea if it is). We were promptly greeted and seated. A friendly server took our drink orders. I had the happy hour special margarita and hubby had a Modelo. We even put in our second drink order immediately since happy hour ended in a few minutes. The drink I received was salty and not sweet at all--however, the second one proved corrected and refreshing. We gave our food orders which consisted of the ceviche and the molcajete. The food came very quickly! Which made us very happy as we were starving! If you have never tried a molcajete--it feeds two easily. It has beef steak, chicken, shrimp and nopales. And the broth in the bottom of the bowl? Ask for more tortillas--because it's delicious! My goodness-don't leave it! We definitely couldn't eat it all and had to take the remainder home. As I write this--my stomach is growling. I can't wait to return!

They no longer serve coffee or just were willing to serve it because wasn't ready so that was already disappointing, everything kinda took a long time to get. The place itself is always pretty and clean but the food quality for the pricing has absolutely gone down.

The restaurant filled up quickly, and it is family-friendly. They have a 4-top bar with high wooden stools and 6 tables in the bar area. It is partially enclosed, so you have some privacy. The menu has all the traditional appetizers, entrees, and desserts. You will find a variety of nachos, quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, and chimichangas. I had the Carnitas El Potro with chunks of tender pork tenderloin with onions and jalapeno peppers topped with shredded cheese and served with a side of beans and rice. I wasn't impressed with the pork chunks as they were fatty, but the beans and rice were flavorful. Desserts are available with Chimi Cheesecake, Flan, Sopapilla, and Ice Cream. I had the Flan and thought it was too dense. The Flan sauce was flavorful, but I did not enjoy the texture of this Flan, and it is my favorite Mexican dessert. I will not order this dessert here again. I'm still happy I tried El Potro's tonight and had the opportunity to visit with old and new friends. My entree, I'd say, is just okay, but what I had wasn't exceptional only due to the fatty meat. Some enjoy the fatty meat while others, like myself, do not. My sister loves fatty meat, so this is what she expects. Me, not so much. Our server, Laura, was excellent, and she didn't miss a step. Extra napkins, refills on drinks, additional chips, or salsa were refilled quickly, and used dishes were removed timely. Dinners arrived quickly and served together. My experience with El Potro was a pleasant atmosphere with average food and good service.
