The food here is really good and they bring your food out fast. When we sat down we immediately got chips and salsa (really good). Our food came out in 10 minutes and the server always came to check up on us. You get good service and good food. I ordered the chimichanga and my sister got the vegi fajitas. The inside of the place is nice and they also have a bar. The people that gave this place a one star review have no idea what they area talking about. One person said the fajitas were room temp not true because I just posted a picture of steaming fajitas and you can actually see the steam.another person said the squash was mushy but that makes no sense because the Mexican culture doesn't put squash in there food. The funniest review of all is when someone said try the molcajete I could swim in it. Moljacate is not food it's an item used to grind avocados. They're not bad for a typical Mexican morning breakfast, I do like the fact that they do have Vegan eggs option which is strange or unusual for a Mexican restaurant but that's what I get here. So I got on yelp and looked for the closest Mexican restaurant. Naturally Yelp tried to tell me Fuzzys was Mexican. Ick. No it's not and never will be. So los jalapeños was up next. I called in an order to pick up some chips and queso. Ten minutes later I was eating one of the best chips and dips I've had! Is the queso blanco perfect? Sweet Mother of God, this place is horrendous. FOOD: Bland and no flavor. We ordered the fajita al caborn and there was not enough salt and pepper in this world to even remotely make this food decent. The squash in the Fajitas was overcooked and would squish in your mouth similar to how jarred baby peas would. I have been here twice and the food sucked..twice. SERVICE: This was the worst part of our visit. Have you ever met someone that looked like they wanted to slap the piss out of you every time you asked for more water? The waiter was so rude, I even contemplated jumping off the imaginary bridge my subconscious had created to escape the twilight zone of never ending horrible service. My waitress was so mean and she scorned us for asking for more pico because she felt like what we had should have been sufficient. Little did she know, that the pico was the only thing that could assist me in swallowing the cardboard in front me that was pretending to be food. OK - so...Other reviews here mention Los Lupes being ok- and in my mind neither of these hold a candle to Mena grill on Marsh. Quick version - cheese enchiladas were greasy beyond any self respecting Tex-mex aficionado's palate. POO POO- and the waiter offered me my margarita with no salt on the glass saying " I forgot the salt...is ok?" -- NO. Not ok. The rita's horrible and the flautas my wife ordered smelled like feet and mothballs (old grease). Beans looked like gray soup and the tortillas were store bought. Not fun when we rarely have a night out alone. So quick version --- nothing nice to say, hence I will stop here. Great fajita style taco's and excellent soup. That is why I come to this joint. Have you guys ever tried the flaming Queso ? It is literally on fire. They light it on fire in front of you. IS THAT EVEN SAFE ? So much awesomeness and such a good dish. They have this Mexican soup dish (I have no idea what its called, the owner once recommended it to me) that is just a pork soup with lime in it. It is absolutely delicious. It has fresh vegetables and such great flavor. Its more similar to a meal but you have to eat the tortillas to really fill you up. The chips and salsa at this place are fantastic as well. Ordering appetizers during lunch will make your meal quite pricey, but the food is still good. Now that I think about it, appetizers aren't really necessary because you do get chips and salsa with your meal. ALSO the lemonade is home made and delicious. I have been a few times for lunch and during dinner. The place is pretty busy during dinner, especially during the weekends. Apparently, they also have an Elvis Impersonator on the weekends. Also good was the Baracho beans. Nicely flavored. These beans and nice flour tortillas would make a decent lunch by themselves. The Bad -- My lunch burrito had lettuce and tomatoes folding inside the tortilla. Not a good idea. It ruins the lettuce. Lettuce is used to add a crispness, heating it makes it into a wilty mess. It would be better if the lettuce and tomatoes were added as a side on the plate. The Ugly -- The salsa was like crushed tomatoes. No real flavoring. No spiciness, no real bite to it. I don't want 5 Alarm Chili hot, but I shouldn't be able to drink it from the bowl, either. (I didn't, but I could have!) Despite the negative elements, we liked the place and will return. Located on Josey Lane, sandwiched between Big Lot and Auto Zone, this place does not give the impression that most patrons expect. But the minute you walk into the establishment, you'll be amazed by its nice decor and cleanliness. The music was modern latin and was not too loud; definitely a nice place to take a date. We came during lunch time and they have an extensive lunch menu with various items for 5.99. We decided to order some dinner items, instead: carne asada (grilled rib eye) and tilapia fillet. The carne asada came on a sizzling hot plate together with zucchini and onion. The sides came on another plate with Mexican rice, beans, avocado, and lettuce. The tilapia was lightly seasoned with flour and spices and then grilled to perfection. It was served on a gigantic plate with the same sides. Everything was rock solid! The only reason I did not give a 5 star was because the taste did not catapult us to another level. :-) But we will definitely be back to try the shrimps and other items mentioned by other reviewers here. read more

Boy oh Boy, is this a conflicted review. Some good, more bad. Well, here we go. Traveling North on Josey from my 'hood further South was a trip down memory lane. We bought our first home in far North Carrollton waaay back in 1978, just South of what was then Hebron Parkway. One street North of us were cattle roaming in the fields. We moved out of the area in 1985, and now am rarely in this part of the world. My oh my, the landscape has changed. Didn't recognize most businesses that are there now, the ones I recall (like the big Minyard's) are gone. Sigh...... Anyhoo, finally found this spot in the SW corner of Josey & Rosemeade, in an old strip center that looks like it may have been renovated, next to an AutoZone. Across the street from Burger King, where I spent many $$ picking up my morning coffee on the way to work. Another heavy sigh....time really flies by doesn't it? Saw this on Yelp recently and decided to check it out even with the mixed reviews. Dined at the one In MdKinney years ago, and don't recall a bad experience. In Summary, in order of appearance: Chips - A big MEH...too thick, too dry, no hint of any oil or salt. 3 chips in salsa and I'm done. 0 stars :( Salsa - first bite, too vinegar-y, too tart, however chunky with onions, jalapenos and maybe some cilantro. Not to my liking. but it grew on me. 2 stars TS Margarita - Now, this gem was pretty good. Served in a huge goblet, very generous serving, not the best I've had, but better than just okay. 3.5 stars Soft corn tortillas - these were pretty awesome! Soft, moist, tender and replaced the awful chips. With soft butter, a little salt, and some of the salsa, a good pre meal snack. 3.5 stars Fish Tacos - this is where the dilemma comes in. The flour tortillas encasing the fish were too thick, too gummy, but the lightly battered and fried Catfish inside was tasty; with a little salt added, it was enjoyable. While I was expecting Tilapia (considering the $13.95 price tag) instead of Catfish, the substitution was not objectionable. HOWEVER, no side dipping sauce, pico or slaw. Just some bland flavorless rice and a mound of shredded lettuce with a slice of pale pink anemic tomato which = flavorless; Just ate the fish. 3.5 stars. Borracho (they call them Charro) Beans - Now, this was darn good, almost as good as Herrera's. Really enjoyed this. I'll give this cup of tender, smokey legumes a YUM. 4 stars. :) Service - perfunctory. No smiles, no great welcoming or conversation, but delivered well. When I ordered a cup of the Borracho beans, she looked confused and said "Charro Beans"? (the menu states Barracho Beans) Me - well okay that will work. She did seem more interactive with a few tables who came in after me, perhaps regulars? Maybe language was an issue? At the end of my dining , and asking Esther her name, and thanking her for her service, she did smile...once. 3 stars. Big point....PRICE. $17.85 for the food, plus tip? Did not of course include the $10.00 TS Marg. Also included $1 for the soft corn tortillas, which I have never been charged for anywhere else; they are complimentary with an entree. Not a big deal, but quite strange. So, $27.85 plus tip for a tex-mex meal, with 1 Marg, even tho it was fish tacos; but for catfish tacos? Price - 2 stars :( :( (Note - in fairness, their typical tex-mex platters ran around $7-8) Atmosphere - there's none, just a simple clean place, dark, with tables and booths. Nuf said. Oh, there is a small area for a band in one corner, adjacent to the small bar. Potential Return Factor - maybe a "6", for a good TS Marg, a bowl of the Charro Beans, and the soft corn tortillas with butter. A nice HH snack if ever in the area again. read more

I've eaten Tex Mex for over 40 years - and this is one of the WORST meals I've ever had in this genre. The chips are bland. The salsa was forgettable The queso flamedo was horrid. I don't even think the cheese was queso cheese. It had the consistency of bubble gum. The lunch specials were truly some of the worst items I've ever encountered. The service was good - but what they were serving was not worth eating. I left almost all the food on my plate and couldn't wait to get out of the place. I'm writing thus review as I'm finishing up my meal at Los jalapenos. The lunch here is well priced with generous portions. The food is excellent. The tacos are geniuine mexican style with fajita meat and none of that taco bell paste that they try to call meat. For prices rivaling taco bell, you get a very nice and upscale decor and excellent, fresh food. We haven't found a replacement just a hair farther north, I'm sorry to say. Emelia's is top notch, but they aren't really a Tex Mex, enchilada joint - they're more of a Mexican taco joint. So I don't compare the two, really. At Jalapeños I always get the mole enchiladas and they're always good. Chips are almost always perfect. Salsa is very good. Food comes out fast. I really like this restaurant. Been going for a year or so. Went there this morning actually. Wait staff is attentive and the restaurant/bar are very clean. Nice bamboo floors and modern decor. They have an Elvis impersonator there on Saturday nights. Warnings: Its mature, heavily sedated, fried PB & B Elvis not young and fit Elvis, sorry Domingo(the impersonator.) This is important ALWAYS, ALWAYS order the bowl of Mom's queso to start (too good) because the salsa is just AWFUL and taste like its from a can, chips are hot/crispy though. Now bad salsa in a Mexican restaurant is precursor to bad food, but the food does get better. I recommend the pasole, carnitas, guiso de res, chile relleno, tortilla soup, and my fav ribs cooked to perfection in a tomatillo sauce.
