I was in the area and wanted Mexican food. I did not want the 'Houston Standard' also known as Pappasito's. I found I wasn't far from this restaurant. It's a family-owned restaurant and you are treated like family when you walk I. There was a large grounds crew eating lunch when I arrived, so I knew the good had to be good. The chips and salsa were good (make sure to ask for the verde also because they only usually bring rojo sauce), but after speaking with the owner, I learned the food is from the 'Puebla region' of Mexico so a little different from our standard TexMex--just what I was looking for! I ordered the beef enchiladas and they came with this diabolical looking red sauce and were baked with a sort of different white cheese (not as runny and greasy as you'd normally see). Lucky for me, the sauce wasn't nearly as spicy as it looked (a little ... sweet even) and I enjoyed them. The enchiladas were fresh and the meat was seasoned well. On top were three rings of raw onions. I thought that was an odd combination, but I tried it and it ... worked. The rice was good and so were the refried beans. I love champurrado but usually can't have any because of the milk. I am definitely returning to this establishment to try other things on the menu. Staff were nice and welcoming. I ordered the beef fajita taco plate with charro beans.The beans were probably one of the best I've ever eaten and the rest of the food was Just as delicious. I order the same meal, chicken flautas, everytime to-go and occasionally the pork tamales. All of it is delicious!!! The guacamole and pico de gallo is freshly made. The refried beans and rice have a nice flavor. And I love the spicy green sauce they give. I ordered the flan once and it was nice. First time trying it so I had no expectations. I order to go food for a friend and I and the food was bland with no flavor. She got the chicken quesadilla and it came soggy and the guacamole was black. I order the parrillada for 1 , the shrimp were dry and the other meat had no flavor. They did have hand made tortillas. Yummy little hole-in-the-wall spot with heart. The services was good and the ambiance chill and quiet. The food has heart and authenticity typical of Mexican food. I was happily surprised to find nopales in my vegetarian burrito. It gave it a lot more depth and substance than the boring unflavored Tex mex of lettuce, tomato, onion mixture found in other places. The chicken I tasted was pretty good but I was put off by the store bought tortillas. I'm used to eating homemade tortillas when I go to a restaurant, especially if its authentic Mexican food. I ordered chicken enchiladas but received beef so my boyfriend got to both of our plates and I ate off his grilled platter. The salsas taste nothing like the kind you get at a tex mex joint.
