Absolutely horrendous experience. My husband and I were passing through Okeechobee and decided to stop for lunch and it ended up being a huge disappointment from start to finish. Before ordering, the waitress offered chips and salsa, which we happily accepted since it's something we always look forward to at Mexican restaurants. She asked if we wanted mild or hot so we chose one of each. She also mentioned the salsa would be served warm which we thought was unusual but did not question at the time. When it arrived the chips seemed like basic store bought rounds and instead of salsa, we were served what tasted exactly like hot enchilada sauce. Both bowls were the same spice level despite us requesting mild and hot. At first I thought it might be taco sauce but when my husband's enchiladas came out it confirmed that we had been served the same exact sauce as on his plate. I also ordered a burrito but what I received was more like an open faced soft taco since it was not wrapped at all and was very small. The refried beans were also completely bland and had no flavor. Overall, the food and experience were extremely disappointing. It felt like a very poor representation of Mexican cuisine and I would not recommend this place to anyone. Stay away. read more

Well I had a hankering for a burrito and I've been here before. I knew they had the biggest and best burritos around. Well I wasn't disappointed!! They have four of the biggest burritos you can imagine. I had the Momma's boy (no pun intended) and wow was it tasty! I get mine wet opposed to my wife that likes hers dry. The wet ones have melted cheese and salsa on top! Yummy! With a side of jalapeño and I large glass of my favorite drink, it's a meal fit for a king or queen?! They have an awesome menu for any other type of plates and they serve beer, wine and all the soft drinks. Nice Mexican atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable. Plenty of parking and seating. `I have been going to Los Cocos since the early eighties. Never once have I had bad food or poor service. My grownup family members insist this to be the first place they eat when they come in town. I go through withdrawls when they take their summer vacation !!! read more

I have been eating here for about 35 years! They used to have a small building around the corner when they first started but had to quickly expand. My family would go here every Friday night. Stopped at this restaurant while I was passing through Okeechobee. The entrees were the best part of the restaurant. I got tacos and my friends got quesadillas and burritos. Everyone enjoyed their meals. However, the salsa was warm and nothing to write home about. Service was friendly and there were lots of people dining in. Convenient in town location just 100' off of Route 70. Plenty of parking. The salsa is served heated, warm not hot, available spicy or mild. Corn based Chips are round, about 2" in diameter, very crunchy and salty, wasn't a real fan but I did eat them all. Had a hard and soft shell taco dinner, the hard was fresh, light, and crunchy I can say they were excellent had the shredded chicken with it. The soft shell won't make it to my plate next time as the hard shell definitely is a favorite. Servers were all friendly. Pueblo viejo is off of 70 and was packed when i arrived. I went inside for the first time service was horrible! salsa tasted like it was from a can, chips tasted like they were from a bag. BLAND MEXICAN FOOD IN OKEECHOBEE We drove from Orlando to Miami via Lake Okeechobee and stumbled onto this restaurant because it was in the GPS database. The restaurant was full of locals and they seemed to be enjoying the food. We were seated quickly and asked if we wanted chips and salsa. The waitress asked us if we wanted mild, medium, or hot salsa. We asked for hot and when we tasted the salsa we both looked at each other in amazement because it tasted like something out of a jar. Enchilada Plate We both ordered the enchilada plates and were disappointed. The plate had two enchiladas filled with chicken and covered in bright yellow cheese accompanied by rice and beans. The first impression were the tortilla chips which looked like they came from a bag from the local supermarket, and the salsa, while homemade was ok, but could use some more onions and spice. The steak was good, but overwhelmed with the tomato sauce....would have been better served dry with the sauce on the side. We drive 60+ miles round trip to come to Los Cocos!! My husband is Mexican and very picky but he loves the Bistek Ranchero,you know the flour tortillas are homemade because of the shape and the salsa is definitely different and we occasionally buy it by the gallon to bring home to freeze. ..but bring your own container. I was in the area on business and stepped into the office where I had to go to and they all eating food from this place, I asked where was it from because it smelled great, the owner gave me directions and I headed right to there and ordered the chips and salsa, and for my entree I had a combo plate that had a wet burrito filled with chunks of really good tasting meat along with a enchilada, and a chicken taco. The salsa is served hot which was a nice surprise I only had the basic cold version everywhere else. It was very flavorful and after the very first taste I knew I was in for a made from scratch Mexican dinner that I wouldn't soon forget, and I am glad to say I was right. Seriously the best Nachos I've ever had in my entire life (And I live in LA, so that's saying a lot). Everything is homemade from scratch, and you can tell that the family that owns it puts a lot of heart and love into their food. I had the nachos and the chicken fajita salad (SO YUMMY!) all the fixings of a fajita sans tortilla (I felt guilty after the nachos :) ) To the gentleman complaining that his taco was 'soggy' if you prefer grade D dried out meat with no juice or flavoring at all I hear Taco Bell has something to offer that you may like. The food was not great. Chips and Salsa were bagged chips. Salsa is served warm and has been done forever. There salsa was like spaghetti sauce I did not care for it. The owner did start making his own verde salsa I sampled it and it was good. Service: I would go back just because Amanda the server was so she made my day. Tables can use a good cleaning they are very sticky so made me feel Dirty. Salads should be served on a plate not the tiny bowls they come in. Never serve your salad dressing in a to go container. This wasn't the worst Mexican joint I've ever been to, but a far cry from the best. I had the steak fajita. In their defense the fajitas were prepared well thought It was served on a hot plate not a sizzling cast iron griddle. One of the things I did like however was that they gave you the option of corn or flour tortillas, as most places don't openly offer the choice. (I'm a corn tortilla guy). I think my biggest disappointment was the chips. Did I mention they charge you for the worst chips and salsa I've ever had? (see photo). They were the same kind you get at the ball park with the sketchy nacho cheese, and the salsa was more like Marinara than salsa. I was far from impressed. Overall it was ok. Given the Hispanic population in Okeechobee I would venture to say there are far more authentic Mexican places in town. read more

Los Cocos was always a stop when visiting my grandparents in Okeechobee. It's been a long time since they moved back down to Miami and a long time since eating at Los Cocos. But on a drive through Okeechobee we just had to stop. Three types of salsa (mild, hot and woo hoo tomatillo hot yumminess!) are delicious. They charge for the chips and salsa which is odd, but they're a small restaurant in a small town so you let it go - (it's like $1.10). I had the "wet combo" which included a wet burrito, enchilada, taco, refried beans and rice. He had chicken and steak fajitas which came with your choice of corn or flour tortillas, a salad, refried beans and rice. They give you your choice of hamburger meat, steak or chicken. This food is so delicious. It is fresh and homemade. They get it out to you quickly. One thing that drives me crazy about fajitas is they bring it to you and they are sizzling on that plate. Then you get all the smoke headed right towards you and now you smell like food. They bring it on a plate - no sizzle! woo hoo! This made me very happy. They serve you quickly and the food is not expensive. Two of us ate for $27 - LOTS of food!!! The staff is friendly and attentive. This is a favorite for the locals and the staff knows them by name. Ample parking in their parking lot or on the street (no parking meters in Okeechobee!). If you're visiting Okeechobee or just passing through, this is a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. So I would probably not return to this restaurant next time I'm in town. First, they charge for chips and salsa and most good places that I go to,Mexican restaurants, don't. Second, the staff loves to communicate with each other by yelling across the dining area. They do this a lot and they are very loud. I ordered the ATW Nachos. There were hardly any chips with the dish and I never saw or heard my waiter again. The salsa was good and I believe homemade. The nachos were ok, but I would not recommend ordering. HORRIBLE!! My co-worker and myself are in town for the night for business. This place was recommended to us by a local resident. I will never go back. We both had the chicken fajitas. The chicken was over cooked, hard, and without flavor. It came with a side of sour cream and that was it. We got some chips and salsa. Little did we know they charged you for them. We work on the road over 200 days a year, and I've NEVER had to pay for chips at a Mexican restaurant. The even worse part about that was, they were disgusting store-bought chips, and the same for the nasty salsa that they serve hot. Not sure why they do that. Trying to convince you they made it. I was told this place was the best in town so decided to stop in for lunch. It was super busy (and loud), but I thought hey, that is usually a good sign. My server Jonathan was prompt and friendly. He asked me if I wanted chips and salsa, and of coarse I said yes. He brought out this tiny bowl of bagged salty chips and warm salsa that also did not taste homemade. My meal was a bit better, but nothing fantastic. I'm still shocked that a Mexican restaurant would serve bagged chips. I can buy better at the grocery store. We stopped in for dinner while in town for a wedding. It was definitely worth it. I had the grilled chicken with onions and tomatoes. It was tender and flavorful. The husband had the taco plate.
