When in this area, I was given the names of three restaurants on the Port Isabel side of the causeway/bridge. Los Cabos was one of them, along with Isabel and Manuel. They are not really a trifecta, though. Isabel and Manuel are breakfast and lunch places, while Los Cabos stays open until the early evening and one can have dinner there. Los Cabos is right on the main drag, just a little ways inland from tacky but fun(ny) Pirate's Cove. You might immediately like the name, thinking of places like Cabo San Lucas, to which I've never been but would like to see. However, I'm going to go with 3 stars on this one, though I would have wanted to give them 4 stars. I'm more okay with doing this because Manuel's is no longer operating, leaving Isabel's and Los Cabos as the "go to" Mexican eateries. Los Cabos has parking right in front in its off-street lot. The interior is spacious and clean. They had quite a bit of selection on the menu, of which there were several based on what you wanted to eat and when. I had a combination platter somewhere in mid-afternoon when it was not crowded. I liked most of what I ate and the portions were nicely sized. My only issue was with the cheese on some of the items. Who doesn't like cheese on their pastas, enchiladas, or salads, for example? Based on appearances, it looked good - like a cross between shredded cheese and crumbles. However, I can't say I like the way it tasted and would have preferred to have the items on my platter without it. But that's an easy fix. The service was not that upbeat. It was a little slow and they weren't that friendly - I'm talking both the person who did the hosting and the server. They need to ratchet that up a little bit, since the other places in Port Isabel have, or had, the art of customer service dialed. There is a little service charge for the use of plastic, but it's minor. (At least they accept credit cards.) The prices at Los Cabos are fair.

The server was very nice and helpful; didn't intrude on us or too pushy. The food was alright, not the best. The carne tasted like cheap store bought meat. The environment was horrible. Every other minute there would be a spider on our table and there were cockroaches on the walls (picture provided)

Service is awesome and so is the food. It is around a 40 minute drive from my husband and I but definitely worth the drive. The atmosphere is great and super friendly and very affordable. Will definitely be coming again.

This is something like our 6th time coming here. First since last year (2021). Since we last been here the prices rose just a little like .75 cents a item and still very affordable and worth the prices, which aren't very high for anything you get here. The breakfast tacos are massive still. Wait staff excellent. Drinks are very good tasting. They've updated the inside somewhat and looks more appealing, but I judge a place by the food, not the paint on the walls. Anyway you can't go wrong coming here. Excellent.. 10 STARS

Just as good as the famous Manny's for breakfast plates - we tried the migas and the taco loco and both were terrific. No crowds, no waiting and everything made to order, Friendly staff and two breakfast specials every day for under $5. Give it a try. We plan to come back often.

Very good Mexican food, I would agree that it's as good or better than Manuel's which is located behind it. Plus it's less cramped, and little to no wait. I had the Mexican combo in chicken (pictured). Wife had the Texas combo in beef. I will be back.

From the sheer size of the breakfast burritos to the flavors, everything is fantastic and beyond what we ever could've hoped for stopping by here. The parking situation is not great as there's not many spots around the side, but figure out how to get in here if you can. The staff is extremely friendly and the interior is clean. We ordered a sausage and cheese burrito; chorizo, egg, and cheese burrito; and a cheese quesadilla. Every single thing was out of this world. We could write again how great the breakfast burritos are, but we recommend you just go and try it. By far one of the best hidden gems we have found in the state of Texas. Make the trip, it's worth it.

Trying new places in the area around SPI - 2 of 2…read more I haven't been to SPI and the Rio Grande Valley that often, but I've eaten at several of the casual eateries on the island and in Port Isabel. If wanting a reasonably priced and filling Mexican breakfast, it used to be Isabel's and Manuel's. Isabel's was much to my liking but I wanted to try somewhere new. Manuel's closed and it has supposedly reopened somewhere else. I'm not going to ask, "Mexiquito ... where have you been all my life?" I thought it was new(er), but was assured it had been there a long time. I didn't make it in for breakfast, but I did make it in for lunch. Inside, it is very different from Isabel's, where they have plainer walls, a lower ceiling, and fluorescent lighting. Mexiquito has the darker woodwork, the green and red colors found on the flag of Mexico, and dimmer illumination that some Mexican locales have. Mexiquito is right on the main drag, so I've obviously driven past it on previous visits to the area. I had one of the combination platters with rice and refried beans. I asked for chicken as the filling for my items inside tortillas. Remember that, if you don't specify the filling, it may default to ground beef. The platter was plentiful and it was fairly tasty. They also bring on the chips and salsa. I had a cup of coffee and a glass of ice water. It's good that I asked for the ice water. Normally, it's to cool down from the coffee. Here, they only feature one type of salsa and it was too hot for my taste. Another reviewer mentions it, so I think I'm on track. I was not going to go with 5 stars to begin with, but only offering that one type of salsa with that much kick doesn't make me a fan. Dial it down a little to something more "middle of the road." Otherwise, if you like spicier salsa, Mexiquito is a reliable eatery with friendly personnel and fair prices.

The problem is I keep forgetting why I stopped coming, and then I come back and remember. Twice now, two years apart, I've made the mistake of ordering the chicken and waffles. You'd think I'd learn. Both times the chicken was so overcooked it was practically jerky. Dry, tough, hard to chew. I don't know what's happening in that kitchen but the chicken needs significantly less time in whatever it's touching. Well-executed fried chicken should have a crust with some snap and meat that's still got moisture in it. This had neither. The wife and I split the banana french toast on the most recent visit hoping to salvage something from the meal. It was fine in the way that something sweet and warm is technically fine, but it was too sugary and didn't leave any impression worth describing. Forgettable. This is a place with decent bones. The staff is good. The prices won't offend you. But the kitchen is not delivering, at least not on what we've ordered, and I've now given it the same chance twice across two years. Writing this mostly as a note to myself: stop ordering the chicken and waffles. Or maybe just stop coming for a while until something changes.

Updates of Texan eateries I like (2 of 2)…read more Yummie's is one South Padre Island restaurant I really like, and if you spend some time here, you may wind up trying most of them, including some across the water in Port Isabel. For starters, Yummie's has a great feel about it - bright, spacious, and slightly nautical. They do a breakfast and lunch business, a business model a good number of local eateries share with them. While I can't vouch for their breakfasts and since I like lunch food more, their lunch menu is fairly vast. With all this being said, I wandered in here the last time on South Padre Island knowing I'd find a lunch platter to my liking. I would expect that to be a bountiful sandwich and that's what I've enjoyed on both visits. In my first visit here, I ordered a slice of the organic red grapefruit pie. It was a feast for the senses. On the last visit to Yummie's, this unique pie was not available. I believe it would have been in season. The server wasn't exactly clear, but said it had something to do with more recent menu planning. I was disappointed. It's that dessert that brought me to Yummie's the first time I visited and it's that item that brought me back. Look, I'm not a granola, and neither are most Texans and "Winter Texans" given that they sell towels and t-shirts with pit bulls on them across the street, which means that you can skip the organic part of the equation if it makes it easier for you to procure red grapefruits for you to deliver on this bodacious pie. The sandwiches and lunch platters at Yummie's are generously sized. I've gotten the standard potato chips to round out my sandwiches. Maybe I didn't see an option, but it would be nice if regular fries or something similar was offered for a reasonable upcharge. Since potato chips already have enough oils and fat, one might as well push the envelope that extra mile with another starch that tastes even better. The reviews will attest to Yummie's being a rock solid restaurant. I agree. I recommend it highly, but, for my wants and needs, will look at the most current menu or call beforehand prior to going in to eat. That's correct ... these aren't the sorts of specifics for which you would text them.
