Classic Ceviche with mango
Katie M.

My daughter and I picked this place to grab some lunch and man we were impressed. The portion size was awesome, the freshness of the fish was perfect and the cilantro pesto sauce is so so delicious, I wanted a whole container to go, lol. My daughter could not stop talking about it so we went back on our last day there to get some to go. This place is great and it seriously is the best ceviche we have ever had. This was our favorite place for food in South Padre and we will be back for more on our next trip.

By far, the best ceviche on SPI, and all of South Texas for that matter! A hidden gem on the main drag in SPI... we talked to several "winter Texans" who had no idea it was there! They do now! We stopped by a couple of times during a recent SPI trip ... super fresh ingredients, ample portions, very reasonable cost. They can add as much heat as you want, jalapeño to scotch bonnet! Very tasty sauces too, we like the creamy jalapeño the best. Open most days... do yourself a favor, stop by! Highly recommend!

I live in central texas and have been craving fresh ceviche for months!!! This place absolutely hit the spot and the serving size is amazing. Service was great too, everyone was kind and working hard. I got the classic ceviche, half shrimp half fish with added jalapeño and mango

Open at 1030am. Must stop on our beach days. Go to order is the classic with shrimp, add mango and a jalapeño.

I'm from San Antonio and visit South Padre every summer and let me tell you, Ceviche Ceviche is a non-negotiable stop every time. It's so good that whoever I bring with me ends up becoming a fan, even if I have to drag them there the first time! This place is fast, fresh, and local, everything you want in a beach-town bite. The service is always friendly and top tier, no matter how busy they are. The portions are super generous, and the prices are more than fair for the quality you get. Whether you're building your own bowl or going with one of their combos, it's hard to go wrong. Everything is flavorful, light, and perfect for a hot day on the island. They also have a sister suite, it's Poke bowl that connects the two sides for anyone wanting seafood but something different. I genuinely look forward to coming here every trip. Ceviche Ceviche is an SPI gem that never disappoints!

I ordered the Original ceviche. It was super light, refreshing, flavorful, and tummy. One order is enough for two people. Definitely something to enjoy on the beach with some cold drinks.

Imagine Chipotle meets Ceviche. Fully customized ceviche where you get to pick the ingredients! I went with mahi mahi, shrimp, jicama, cantaloupe, cilantro, and mango. Accented by lime juice and salt and pepper, the meal was refreshing and tasty.

We've been coming here the past few years for THE best ceviche on the island! It's always SUPER fresh and staff are always friendly! We usually grab to-go so that we can enjoy it on the beach! This is a must go to!

Mahi and shrimp device, with cucumber, pineapple, and mango. So good. Highly recommend .

Fresh made ceviche, make your own options. Two of us shared the original, with Mahi and shrimp, adding mango, pineapple and cucumber. It was so good. Highly recommended.

Kind of a hole in the wall but amazing ceviche, make sure you get the homemade chips to go with your ceviche. It's a walk up to order restaurant, and they do have a small area to dine in, but we were staying over near the beach so we got it to go. They made our orders right then while we waiting, and answered all our questions. I would love for them to open one up in San Antonio. Thanks Y'all.

This was so delicious. I believe I actually lifted the bowl and drank the liquid at the end.

A bit late on my review, we actually were there on February 15, 2025. I was not able to decide what I wanted for my wife and I and our two friends, so I made the decision to purchase the classic and the Islander. From the outside the business looks a tad rundown. Went inside it also looks a little bit worn. BUT, then everything changes when you talk to the staff. They are extremely knowledgeable, with a degree of comfort and teaching new people about this wonderful thing called ceviche. The young lady who took care of me, did not rush anything at all, and was willing to explain every part of the process and all of the different nuances available from their menu. When I was finally able to make my decision, she crafted one of the most beautiful things I think I've ever seen. Everything was super fresh, where she even had to chop up a few different items fresh from the refrigerator so that it could be crisp and wonderful and my dish. I don't know when we will get back to South Padre Island again, but you can bet your lucky stars. I'll probably be in there about every other day. The food was fabulous and the staff was tremendous. I agree with a couple previous postings, take a little bit of time and invest in the aesthetic and the outside view and you'll probably be more busy than you could ever imagine. But then again, do I really want you so busy that I have to wait forever to get this beautiful product... Things that make you think!

This place is busy but so worth the wait!! I ordered fish & shrimp mixed classic! Still as good as it was a decade ago.

It was so good. Tostada chips sold separately. I think the girl shoving the tip jar at me left a bad taste. Otherwise, great ceviche.

Great ceviche. You get a very large portion and it's not expensive at all. I like that they made it to order. Will eat again.

Ask the Community - Ceviche Ceviche

Will you be open Sunday 24th (Christmas Eve day?). We are traveling from Galveston and would love to try the ceviche. If so, what hours and when do you recommend getting there?

Would you want to work on Sunday, Christmas Eve? Don't count on it.

What are the actual hours, we have attempted to eat here a couple times but it's been closed during stated business hours :-(?

10:30am - till we sell out. We recommend you cone early or call in your order and we will save you some Ceviche. Sorry about the trouble.

If you find yourself anywhere near South Padre Island, do yourself a favor and order the shrimp…read morescampi at The Grouchy Gringo. It is nothing short of outstanding. The shrimp are perfectly cooked--tender, plump, and buttery--so fresh they practically melt with each bite. The garlic-infused sauce is rich without being heavy, coating the pasta in a silky finish that brings everything together beautifully. But what truly elevates this dish are the tomatoes. They are delightfully sweet, bright, and bursting with flavor, adding a fresh, vibrant contrast to the savory scampi. Every forkful strikes that perfect balance of citrusy zest, garlic warmth, and natural sweetness. The Grouchy Gringo may have a playful name, but there's nothing grouchy about this plate. It's the kind of dish that makes you slow down, savor each bite, and already plan your next visit before you've even finished. Absolutely five-star worthy.

We had everything that was shown plus their…read morebarbecue shrimp which tasted just like Worcestershire sauce and Worcestershire sauce only.... I had a burger it wasn't bad but my brother got fajitas they were overly dry and flavorless my second brother got the Cajun pasta. It was undercooked and had a lack of flavor. And the eggrolls that we had, I'm not gonna lie it tasted very strange. The overall food was a solid one out of 10 for the whole table. To be honest I believe they need some serious intervention with the cooks in the back. Our nice server, mentioned that the owner went to culinary school but he's not the one in the back cooking so that's kind of my dilemma. The owner needs to Gordon Ramsay, the kitchen because my God I got the stuffed shrimp and it looked like somebody flicked two boogers under some shrimp. I was overly confused. Nothing about that was stuffed then I proceeded to tasted the "stuffing" that was supposed to be inside. Disgusting absolutely horrendous... I feel like this place could have some potential if they revive the menu and possibly teach the cooks how to execute what the restaurant is trying to prepare. it seems like the restaurant wants to be a Cajun restaurant. And that could work out if they had recipes that were Cajun. Lastly, my third brother got the endless shrimp, the first plate came out with a good amount of both shrimp and fries, but it was like they were frying fresh shrimp, and mixing already fried shrimp together some shrimp were hot, really hot and some ice cold that was really confusing. Then every time they brought out another plate of shrimp they would lay 4 to 6 fries on top that was strange once they even just put three fries on top who does that? This is not a hate review or anything. This is just transparency on how a customer experienced your restaurant. I feel like this is the type of restaurant that thrives off of one time experiences due to people not knowing what they will be walking into.. giving it a try, and then immediately being disappointed to never return.

Before even stepping in, we specifically asked if there was a cover to enter when the person at the front said "oh yes there's covers upstairs." We said "no, do you have a cover charge?" And they responded back "no." My friend group and I then decided to hang out a bit and see what this spot was all about. We ordered multiple drinks and even ordered food, just enjoying ourselves upstairs. We were there prior to the DJ setting up so once he started playing music, we were dancing and having a really great time!! All of a sudden, 2 security guards (who had been upstairs for about 45 minutes plus before even speaking to us) finally decided to approach us where they had stated we needed to go downstairs to get a wrist band before 10pm... when it was already after 10, closer to 10:20pm. Confused but not wanting to cause a scene, we decided to go downstairs to get our "wristband". Once downstairs, we were approached by who I assume would be the manager- scrawny, gray-haired older man- who was already obviously annoyed of our group for some reason. He made us show our ID AND get a hand stamp before "re-entering". We asked why this was suddenly an issue and all he could come up with was "the stamp is to allow you entry coming in and out." Again, not wanting to start a scene or be a problem, we still got the wristband and hand stamp- which is very weird might I add. I have never been to a bar where I get in before the cover charge and then is hunted to get a wristband to prove I was in the bar before 10 or I'll be forced to pay for the cover. My friend group and I are young, but of course over 21, so I'm unsure what this whole issue was about. The older man who practically forced us to get these wristbands well after the fact of being there left such a bad taste in our mouths that we decided to leave. Beware of this place if coming in before the cover charge! Again, not sure what the reasoning was for all this. We tried asking out of curiosity but was told to "not give attitude or we'll be thrown out." Consider spending your money somewhere else that is more worthwhile.

Unfortunately, what should have been a pleasant mother-daughter evening turned into an extremely uncomfortable and disappointing experience. When we arrived, everything seemed fine. However, after being seated, I noticed that my daughter and I were the only people of color at our table, and everyone else in our seating area appeared to be white. I was also noticeably younger than the other guests. I specifically wanted to enjoy the waterfront view, so I politely asked the hostess whether I could raise the blinds. She explained that the sunlight could be bright but clearly told me I was allowed to do so. I raised them slightly. Almost immediately, I heard another customer loudly say, "Why the fuck would she open that?" The comment was loud enough for others in the dining room to hear. Despite how uncomfortable that was, I chose not to engage and continued enjoying my time with my daughter. Shortly afterward, a man from that table approached me and asked me to close the blinds because the sunlight was bothering him. I respectfully explained that his dining experience was just as important as mine, but that I had also chosen that seating area to enjoy the waterfront view. Instead of allowing the staff to handle the situation respectfully, another individual from his table approached our server and began asking whether a particular person was there, seemingly someone in management. What happened next was incredibly disappointing. Our server immediately reached over my daughter to lower the blinds without first asking me or acknowledging my preferences. He then informed me that he would get a manager. It was as though the other table's comfort automatically mattered more than ours. When the manager arrived, rather than speaking with me first or attempting to understand both sides of the situation, she went directly to the other table. I was ultimately seated elsewhere. As a mother dining with my Black daughter in a room where we already stood out, I couldn't help but feel singled out and dismissed. I cannot speak to anyone's intentions, but I can absolutely speak to how we were treated and how that experience made me feel. My issue was never simply about the blinds. It was about respect, equal consideration, and how the staff chose to handle the situation. Every paying customer deserves to feel equally valued, regardless of their age, race, or who they are dining with. I came here to make a beautiful memory with my daughter, not to feel uncomfortable or as though our experience mattered less than someone else's. Extremely disappointing, especially from a restaurant that presents itself as an upscale dining establishment.

Here's what we saw: From the outside the restaurant looks good with a dog friendly patio and decent parking around the side of the building. The inside is clean and well maintained with a few TVs to catch games. We sat outside since we had our dog with us and our server was fantastic. He had a lot of jokes, knew when to give us space, and was just incredibly attentive all around. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ran out. The food was very mediocre, granted they just started serving breakfast recently so they're probably trying to work the kinks out. We ordered the pancake breakfast with breakfast potatoes, bacon, and Texas toast as well as the chillaquiles with beef fajita. The pancakes were very thin and chewy, definitely not a high quality batter and not moist. The bacon likewise was chewy and the toast was, well, toast. The best part of the dish were the breakfast potatoes which had a good texture and flavor to them. As for the chillaquiles, it was decent. A bit of a messy plate but nothing that took away from the meal. The beans, tortilla chips, etc were good but the best part was the beef fajita, seasoned well and pretty juicy. Again, it's hard to write this place off as a 3 star because we think they're a work in progress on the breakfast side and likely have better food on other parts of the menu, we can just only write about our experience. Service was phenomenal, that cannot be understated. Likely a place we will try again if ever back in SPI and hopefully we can rate higher next time!
