My Steak Torta with Spicy Avocado
Donald M.

I love little Mexican restaurants, and I don't believe I'm alone here. I had to drop my friend off at home then a late night long drive home, and I needed my grub. I discovered this lovely little place that was still open till 1am. They were pleasant and busy. They deep fry their own chips, and my usual torta was just what I needed. The only thing that could use a little love is the salsa, for me, could be a little bit spicier. Although, they were still flavorful. Lots of space for dinning in, and they have their own parking lot. I will be back.

Authentic and Delicious!…read more I was in the area with my family, and we decided to stop in for a bite. We walked in late one Sunday afternoon and were seated promptly. Our waiter was a polite gentleman who was pleasant and affable. I ordered a mango margarita and my sister had a Paloma. The margarita appeared to have been dispensed from a pre-made container. It wasn't something that was freshly blended. It was decent but a little too sweet. I didn't finish it and ended up ordering a Coke later. My sister enjoyed her Paloma though. My mom had a ground beef taco and a chicken tinga taco. She didn't like the chicken but enjoyed the beef. My sister and I both had the rice and beans. For tacos, we ordered chicken tinga, Carne asada, and al pastor. The tacos were phenomenal. They were flavorful, tender, and authentic. The tacos are small, like street tacos, but it was more than enough. The rice and beans were also tasty. My sister didn't care for the rice, but I enjoyed it. We all agreed that we'd visit Maiz & Barrio again. The restaurant vibe was lively and comfortable. The restaurant decor is tasteful with vibrant colors and beautiful wall art. The restaurant is a decent size, so the tables aren't too close together. The bill was $116 for the three of us, which included a 22% tip.

None of the previous businesses were able to hit the mark, or last for any significant amount of time. Maiz & Barro have seemingly figured it out. There are so many Mexican restaurants in the south side ... both of the fast food variety and also the ones offering full service. However, most of the ones actually in Oak Forest don't offer table service, so it's nice to have this spot in the neighborhood. The food is a bit pricey, but the atmosphere is lively, and the service was great. We've been here a few times in the past and the food has always been good. We stopped in for lunch during this visit and we did not leave disappointed. The tacos are very good and the complementary salsa they serve is delicious. Not my favorite Mexican food in the area, but definitely good enough to warrant repeated visits.

Loved this place! A true hole in the wall, no frills great Mexican restaurant…read more Huge portion of fajitas. Meat was flavorful and well cooked. Not the prettiest pieces like the bagged stuff most places used. Chicken thighs whacked into various sizes, steak sliced against the grain then chopped into odd sizes. Can tell they are cutting this themselves. Usual accompaniments of pico, sour cream, guac, rice and beans were all fresh and good. Tortillas were fabulous! Friends both had the 3 taco meal with steak. They both liked them a lot and said they were similar to what both of their mothers made. High praise from 2 Mexican men. Only a few tables inside but most people were doing take out. Very clean inside. Cash only so be prepared. Priced so reasonably you might even have enough pocket change. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Chicago.

It has a pretty simple menu of a few items or so. At least it makes it easier to choose anything. The prices are okay and the food is better than it looks. Bad thing is there's no alcohol. It's not a place for margaritas, but rather Jarritos. That's why they have to make good on the food, so you can at least get something. For meat eaters the menu is mostly for them with things like beef and chicken. There's also crazier things like tongue. It's about $8 for guacamole. Pretty much the only vegetarian thing on the menu it seems. Had a chunkiness with a light spiciness to it. The tortilla chips were crispy and simple without being burnt like at many places. For sure it's one of the many places to get Mexican food. It's located on Cicero Avenue at 137th Street. They're open until late at night so you can go when getting the munchies or something.

The place has a welcoming, casual atmosphere. There is choice of seating: booth, table, or bar side. It's clean and well attended. The wait staff was nice. The chef even came to clarify some things on my order (how I wanted my egg) and checked on me afterwards with future suggestions. I'll be back. I seated myself in a booth. Fresh made chips and salsa choices were brought to the table with napkins and utensils. Rhodes chips were just right. They were made from good tortillas, crisp fried in clean oil. I could have just had that for breakfast. I needed proteins, so I chose the Chilaquiles con Huevo in green salsa. I was told the red was not spicy but can be adjusted to my liking. My eggs (2) were over easy (well executed), served over cheesy corn fried tortilla strips with sour cream, tomatoes, refried beans, rice and guacamole. I make it through half the dish. The rest was taken home and eaten the next day. Just as tasty. I have more s dishes to try and a Summer month to do it.

La Cocina De Mama is one of the popular places to drink and eat along this particular stretch. Far from authentic. They focus more on look and taste. Came in and got seats at the bar. It's often crowded and this time was no exception. There was a wait for a table. Of course cocktails. We got a couple of these. It's about $13 for a margarita. The Cucumber Margarita is great stuff. It's about $12 for a burrito. Menu has a good amount to choose from. I got the Vegetariano Burrito. This has beans, cheese which I left off, lettuce, rice, and tomatoes. Filling. There's even more items if looking. Great stuff to drink and eat. It's located on 95th Street at Massasoit. There's a few things for vegetarians.

It was made fresh at our table and hubby added a little more salt to it. We were also served a small bowl of salsa. The chips are warm and fresh. Hubby ordered the combo fajitas and a strawberry margarita. I ordered the steak enchiladas rojas and a pina colada. Everything was seasoned well and we enjoyed our meals. Kudos to the bartender for making great drinks!

Great Mexican in Midlothain, another great Mexican place on the south side of Chicago…read more This gets the extra star for "not blasting their music as loud as Calienté does" according to my father. I love their green sauce, super tomatillo-y with a little bit of tang to it. Their red has the nice roasted flavor but isn't too killer. Their salsa is good and guacamole is nice and fresh. If you need the heat they carry El Yucateco, that's the hot sauce Mexicans use and if you need anything hotter than that you bring your own insanity sauce. I ordered the Mexican skillet which provided a more than generous portion of chorizo cooked with potatoes. Eggs were cooked overeasy and the yolk blended in really nicely. It is to be noted that their beans are really good, which sounds ridiculous but they were definitely above average. Most places will just dump them out of the can and heat them up. Same with their rice, it was flavorful and a little tomato-y, which reminds me of my mothers old recipe. My girlfriend ordered the chicken taco dinner and she really liked it. The chicken was nice and moist-- not crazily seasoned or marinated, but cooked right. My dad ordered the steak dinner and I could say the same about the steak -- nice char, easy to chew. His plate came with some cactus which I got to try, and that was pretty good; kinda tangy, nice texture. I also liked the horchata, which had a nice amount of spice to it and wasn't gritty! The service is good and I should mention that the time before we were here, they gave us a little sample of tongue -- it wasn't exactly my thing, but the fact that they let us sample it I was grateful for. Plus if you DO like tongue, it is likely very good. (It did taste good, I just wasn't a fan of the texture.) So maybe if you've got a kid or are otherwise curious about something it seems that they will let you sample at least the not-so-expensive things. This place may not be off a main road, but it is certainly not to be passed up if you need a new Mexican place.
