Girls, avoid Lori J Macuilla at all costs. She's a money-hungry heartless doctor who doesn't give a crap about you and your well-being. Dr. Maciulla was recommended by a friend of mine. Upon arriving at her office the first time, I was presented with their financial policy, which lists a bunch of non-insurable charges, such as a charge to speak to Dr. Maciulla over the phone if you have a request or fees for paper filing. This certainly raised an eyebrow, but hey, I was already in the office, awaiting my appointment. She was pretty chatty and friendly at first. She even went on to tell me the 411 about all her children and how one of them almost died because of a poor doctoral diagnosis. And my physical exam was relatively pleasant. However, her and her office became a total nightmare to deal with after a mixup with prescription. Not knowing that there was a generic version released for a medication I needed, I simply told her the name of the medicine for the prescription. Upon arriving at CVS, I was given a generic because the prescription didn't say Brand-only. I had called her office to correct this which they did for the onsite pharmacy. However, when I asked them to do the same for the mail-order prescription since she wrote 2 prescriptions for me that time, they became the most difficult people to work with. In fact, she yelled at me over the phone, telling me how I was wasting her time and that it is my responsibility to tell her upfront if I preferred branded despite my having explained that I didn't know a generic was available. She refused to write me another prescription with charging me $10 despite knowing that it was a honest mistake by both parties. So, lesson learned is to avoid these bloodsucking money-hungry doctors. You want a doctor that's going to be there for you when you need them rather than being all self-centered. read more

I have being going to Dr. Maciulla for over 10 years and am very appreciative for Dr. Maciulla's utmost care of my physical AND psychological well-beings. She always asks me about my personal situation to evaluate my psychological conditions, which affect my physical conditions. She always spends enough time to know everything for the past year during annual check-ups, which enables her to give me accurate diagnoses. She even called me over the weekend to let me know about the test result, which was critical for my current condition. She said she called me as soon as she got the result because I would be worried about it. Her staffs were always very helpful whatever I asked them for. The receptionist was always willing to help me for billing issues and medical questions by asking questions to Dr. Maciulla between patients, if I forget to ask. THIS is a doctor you want to see. I was referred to her about 20 years ago now after cryo surgery to manage my case after the doctor I was seeing quit taking my insurance at the time. On my first visit for gyn issues she examined me and informed me I had a heart murmur that I didn't know I had. (I pursued it with a cardiologist after that). She is NOT warm and fuzzy and will speak to you matter of factly and directly but she DOES absolutely know her stuff and she is caring. She has also done gyn surgery on me at a later date that went well and I didn't worry about anything because I knew she was in charge. Had I had children, I'd have wanted her on my side with me but she gave that up a number of years ago to have more of a family life and also due to skyrocketing insurance costs. I think she's wonderful and will continue to see her as long as I live in this area. I have never had a problem with her staff either and have followed her from her own practice to a partnership to her own practice again over the years. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with her. (though if you're looking for obstetrics she will refer you to someone). I see her in her McLean office. There are very few doctors in this area I'd recommend this highly but they are out there! read more

I saw Dr. Maciulla today as a first time patient. And, Dr. Maciulla and her staff could not have been nicer and more amenable to me today. I had a mix up about my appointment time; I originally thought the mix up came from their end, but once I played back a voicemail I had, I realized that it was my error and not Dr. Maciulla's office. Regardless, when the receptionist understood my frustration (I had booked the appointment several weeks ago), she said for me to come on in and they would see me. When I arrived there was no rebuking or making me feel bad for the mixup. On the contrary, everyone was accommodating and professional. On the medical side, Dr. Macuillla and her nurse, Mare, were thorough, patient, and detailed as they took down my medical history and explained the procedure I would be having in a few weeks. I feel good having a GYN that I can trust with my care and an office that understands that even in today's digital age mixups and errors happen. read more

I was not impressed. I came for a specific reason and she suggested I come back for full physical. I came back and then the full physical consisted of pap, ovary check and prescription for a mammogram. All this I could have gotten from a Primary Care Doctor. I'd like to preface this review by saying that I'm not one to complain. This is my first time ever openly complaining about someone's service; I don't even send food back at restaurants. I apologize for the essay, but I promise it's all pertinent to the review. I recently had a bad experience with Dr. Maciulla and will no longer be a patient of hers, as advised by 2 other trusted doctors that I see. Also I am a nurse, so there's that too. I went in for my annual in December of this year and I immediately noticed something about her demeanor changed from the previous times I had seen her. I wanted to discuss alternative forms of birth control with her (I was on the pill, but wanted to switch to an implant or IUD), and she immediately said that she thought it was a bad idea (there are no underlying health reasons on my part, she simply said that she has not had luck with them in the past). I was a little confused as to why that would be the case, but I didn't question her and she even gave me the contact info for another doctor if I wanted to go through with it in the end. I kind of got the vibe that she was kind of letting her personal biases get in the way of her medical advice, which again, I understand. The rest of the appointment went normally, and I made an appointment with the doctor she recommended to discuss alternative birth control. I ended up getting an IUD that same week, which went perfectly for me and I love it. I got a call from Dr. Maciulla not even an hour after my procedure where she informed me that I had low-grade cervical dysplasia and needed to come in immediately for a cervical biopsy. I told her that I just had a procedure done and wasn't sure if that would be a wise decision, to which she responded with a tone of disappointment (she did not actually scold me, this is just how I perceived it). I asked her what dysplasia was, and she just kept repeating that it could potentially develop into cancer and that I shouldn't google it because I'll just get scared. She also told me that I probably got it from exposure to HPV, and I felt that she implied that I was sexually irresponsible (which is very much not the case). I followed her instruction and came in to have the procedure done. During the appointment, she was very cold and didn't tell me at all what she was doing other than "are you allergic to iodine?" and instructions to the nurse. She has always been a no-nonsense type of person, which I personally appreciate in a doctor, but this time it was to the point where it was a little hurtful. She made several comments saying stuff like "now that I'm looking closer I'm not surprised that you had an abnormal pap" (not exaggerating). I was advised that it will probably go away, and the solution was to "eat dark green veggies." I ultimately got so scared that I started crying (I know she said mild, but I had no idea what was happening and I was in a lot of pain from the IUD) and Dr. Maciulla just stared at me, not saying a word, until I stopped. She then finished the appointment with nothing other than "come back in the spring, you'll be fine" and then walked out the door. When I got home, I immediately called my other doctors, all of whom informed me that she should not have done this procedure (just like I thought) so close to getting an IUD, that I am too young to be having this procedure done to begin with (the current recommendation by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is ~age 24), and that I should not go back to her. I also was informed that mild cervical dysplasia is very common for my age group and can be caused by other viruses in the HPV family such as chicken pox, which I had as a child. She also claimed on myPrivia portal that she put in the IUD, which is false. SO, as you can imagine, I will not be going back to this office again. read more

I agree with Jeannie. I was her patient for several years. But if you challenge her, no matter how small the issue, she'll turn on you in a heartbeat. I was asked to sign a confusing form that seemed to be a consent to a procedure that was not being performed. The receptionist couldn't answer my questions & along with another staffer, went to ask Maciulla. They emerged from her office to say that unless I signed it, my test would be "thrown in the trash." No explanation - just a threat. I was annoyed enough to post this incident online. She replied with 3 misstatements (1) she said the form was routine for Medicare patients. Wrong. No other doc has asked me to sign something like that. (2) she claimed I had no way to know what she said, since I wasn't in her office. I don't have to be a whizzo detective to know that when 2 staffers come out of her office, & both use the exact same words about throwing my test in the trash, it's no coincidence (3) she claimed I was "rude" & upset her receptionist. No, I was very polite, tho the poor girl might have been new & did seem terrified at being asked about the form. Finally, Maciulla sent me.a letter "firing" me as her patient. Of course I would never have gone back to a doc who was so hard-mouthed & unprofessional. What stays in my mind is that this unpleasant episode could have been avoided if she'd taken the trouble to answer a few questions I had. Perfect right to ask. Instead, she evidently thought intimidation would be quicker & easier. A few other points: she spent a large chunk of every appointment bragging about how wonderful & successful her family is. She also enjoys putting down other doctors as incompetents. I frequently wished she would work out her status anxieties elsewhere & spend that time addressing the reason for my visit. Dr. Maciulla and her staff are amazing. Dr. Maciulla diagnosed me with a condition previously missed by another gyno I had previously seen. Had she not diagnosed me my condition would have gotten significantly worse and I would have been left without any answers! I am so thankful! I hate to write this update, but I feel that I must. I've been a patient of Dr. Maciulla's for about 4 years now... Unfortunately, I am not her patient any longer. Here's why: Recently, I had the awful experience of dealing with her incredibly rude receptionist on the phone. I was trying to reschedule an appointment and work around my very busy schedule and the fact that I have to drive over an hour to their office (and used to do so willingly)... she used a nasty tone of voice, snapped at me, and had a terrible attitude. It was unprofessional and I did not tolerate it. She lost her patience with me because I turned down a couple of dates/times she gave me, and instead of being courteous and flexible, she started snapping at me. She even had the balls to argue with me about coming in-I told her I was using over-the-counter treatment for an infection, and she goes, "well, do you need to be seen then?" Ridiculous. I will be finding a doctor closer to home, with more professional front office staff. read more

I LOVE Dr. Maciulla!! She is a great doctor and about 5 of my friends go to her and they all rave about her as well. She isn't really a "nurturing" type of doctor and more just matter-of-fact but I think she is really straight to the point, easy going person. I've never had any issues with either nurses or the front desk staff. They used to have some pretty bad receptionists but I think the new ones are really great. She does charge for phone consultations, but hey, you are using up appointment time where she could be seeing a patient so I understand that. Also, one of my friend's grandmother went to another doctor because of pretty bad pelvic pain and when the other doctor couldn't find anything wrong, she ended up getting a second referral from Dr. Maciulla and she diagnosed her with ovarian cancer! Without her diagnosis, it may have gone untreated for who knows how long. I know my friend credits Dr. Maciulla with saving her grandma. read more

Dr. Maciulla is hands down the best gyn doctor around. She is extremely knowledgeable and a straight shooter but she is also compassionate and takes care of her patients as if they were her own children. I can tell you the few times I had a freak out moment Dr. Maciulla and Mary Ellen helped me see that everything would be ok.
