We have eaten here many times over the years, and the restaurant is in a good location so it gets a lot of traffic. Their menu doesn't seem to change over the years though, so it's pretty staid when compared to many other restaurants. As a consequence, I've worked my way through many of their offerings and although many are good, I'm interested in new taste sensations and would prefer to eat elsewhere. That said, their food is tasty and provides a good introduction to Italian cuisine.
My wife really likes the veal with cooked apples on top. It's three or four small medallions of veal that appear to have been cooked or baked perhaps, with a ring of thinly sliced apples laid around the top of them. The sauce contains raisins and thinly sliced almonds and perhaps some marsala wine. We think a dab of corn starch may be added to thicken the sauce - or perhaps it's just reduced down. Can't tell if everything is cooked all at once or separately and then brought together, but I think perhaps all together because it's all laid out so nicely on top of the meat pieces. There are little dark pieces of something that look like bits of pepper, but it's not pepper because they have no taste and are soft.
Another meal: My wife has had caprese that was a huge plateful of tomatoes and a gigantic bocconcini of mozzarella. The balsamic vinegar could have been a better quality though. For her scondo, she ordered veal cooked with apples and raisins and sliced chestnuts that was really good. I had bruschetta that was really good - good Italian bread toasted, scrubbed with garlic and topped with tomatoes and peppers and something that tasted like chicken liver (not so good). For my secondo, I had veal marsala. In both cases, our veal was tender enough that we could cut it with a fork. And, it wasn't at all salty. The wine was a Barbera d'Alba that was really good too.
Another meal: I had a fillet that was very tasty, but was one of the worst cuts of meat I've ever eaten. It so much gristle in it that I was only able to eat about half of the meat. I should have sent it back.
Antoher meal: Veal with lemon sauce. Also caprece and bruschetta and a bottle of Barbera. Everything was good.
Another meal: My wife had her usual - bruschetta and scallopini cooked with apples, while I had the caprece and scallopini cooked in marsala wine sauce. Again, very tasty.
I've watched homeless men approach the door here and be given a meal made up just for them to take away. Very nice to see... read more
