We are from south Texas and frequently visit this area to see family (i lived in the area too as a child). Until this past year we always declined offers to dine on Mexican Food from this area, as we are accustomed to some of the finest mexican food in the country in the Austin/San Antonio area.
We finally accepted an invitation to lunch at Lora's a few months ago. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was as good as many of the places back home. And seriously, it is better than most any place we have expererienced outside of our south Texas area.
The most impressive item to me is their "in house- homemade" corn tortillas. Even if you have previously only preferred flour tortillas, I would strongly encourage all to try their awesome corn tortillas. I have eaten "home-made" tortillas at almost every place in our area that offers them and I can honestly say this is absolutely the best (not only corn) but the best tortilla I have ever eaten. I crave them. Their salsa is super flavorful and tastes very fresh. I would go by their store and buy their salsa before I would buy it at any store. Tortilla chips were good. I really enjoy their Guisado De Pork & Cactus (#25). It is different than many "guisadas" I've tried, but nonetheless very flavorful with just the right amount of heat to give you a little sweat on the brow. lol. My wife thoroughly enjoys their beef fajitas and my son really likes the "ground beef soft tacos as well as the shredded beef burrito supreme. I sampled both and heartily agreed.
Each dish that we have ordered on our many trips their lately has tasted as it has been very freshly made and we joyfully approved. The portions all seem to be plentiful. And the price is very reasonable for this quality of food. The downtown building they are located in, is very old, but the restaurant area inside has always appeared more than sufficiently clean. The service is prompt and friendly, (even with a slight language barrier with some) but remember this food is fresh and ! as it should ! takes a little time.
They have a few typical grocery items available in the "small convenience store" area of the facility, of which many are of hispanic origin. This aea is a bit crowded and unorganized. But hey you can grab a 'six-pack' of good mexican beer to go with your order.
Lately, with the "nation wide virus issue"everything has only been available "to-go". But it has still been of very good quality.
If you are anywhere in the area it is worth the drive to give it a try. I highly recommend the food at Lora's. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we do.
I could not believe this place was not on Yelp and heavily reviewed. read more
